The Sony SELP18200 offers a wide 18mm to 200mm zoom range (35 mm equivalent: 27mm to 300mm): wide to super telephoto in a single versatile lens. Expansive landscapes, dynamic snapshots with normal human perspective, engaging medium-telephoto portraits with beautifully defocused backgrounds, and super telephoto sports and wildlife - this flexible lens comfortably covers all of these subjects and situations.

The SELP18200 incorporates a newly developed internal linear motor that achieves an exceptionally smooth and quiet focus operation. The result is an almost noiseless, smooth highspeed focusing operation that is essential for high-quality movie capture.

In addition to variable speed zoom the SELP18200 supports constant speed zooming for slow, smooth zoom effects that can enhance cinematographic expression but are difficult to achieve manually. Zoom can be controlled directly from camcorders that feature built-in zoom levers, as well as from the built-in zoom lever on the lens. Since power for the internal zoom drive mechanism is supplied by the camera, no additional battery is required.

Optical image stabilizations (Optical SteadyShot) allows for sharp images to be shot using shutter speeds as much as 4 stops slower than would normally be possible when shooting handheld. Advantageous for general photography, but is particularly effective when combined with the Anti Motion Blur and Hand-held Twilight modes provided in the NEX-series Handycam camcorders, and it makes difficult indoor shots that retain the mood of the ambient lighting possible without the need to increase ISO sensitivity, delivering top-quality images with minimal noise.

This high-quality lens design features 5 aspheric surfaces and unreserved application of advanced technology developed for the Alpha-series E-mount lenses in order to deliver images of superlative clarity and presence. This compact lens affords first-class contrast and sharpness from the image center right out to the edges.

The SELP18200 incorporates the same type of circular aperture that is a popular feature in other Alpha E-mount lenses. This 7-blade aperture is designed to maintain a circular shape from maximum aperture to two stops down, yielding smooth, natural defocusing with a beautiful circular rendering of point light sources.

The exterior of the lens barrel is made of aluminum alloy for elegant, high-quality appearance and feel that ideally balance the unit's compact dimensions. Metal construction also provides maximum durability in combination with the metal lens mount.

Best zoom lens for nex cameras

The only lens you need for nex 7 to make excellent still and video camera This lens takes sharp and contrast pictures as well as professionally looking video due to image stabilization and smooth power zoom (you will only need to buy an external microphone the build in captures too much wind and other noises) I also own nikon d 800 combined with nikon lens 28-300 and the pictures from nex 7 with 18-200 are sharper with better dynamic range and color. You get all that in very portable package that covers large range of photo opportunities in single twist of the ring. It's true you can get better sharpness color and dynamic range from zeiss 24/1.8 but you will miss a lot of photos where you simply cannot get close or you traveling and do not have enough time to find the best place to take the picture. The lens is to use primarily outside on sunny day. Indoor I would use my 50mm/ 1.8 due it's large aperture that allows for much lower Iso The biggest negative is the power zoom motor combined with large diameter of the lens becomes difficult to hold by the lens.

Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS E-mount

By

This lens appears to be a quality product, manufactured to excellent standards. The lens has a great appearance and feel and the zoom works smoothly with no discernible creep at this point. The hood goes on and comes off easily. Comparing the sharpness and IQ to Nikon products, specifically the 28-300 3.5-5.6, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was equal or better. In my opinion the corner sharpness was better than what I had experienced previously with other products. This is a great travel lens.

Great Lens

By

I got this lens included with my VG30 and I must say I really enjoy it. The focus and zoom rotate very smoothly. The only thing that bothers me is the bump at the bottom of the lens. It makes it alittle uncomfortable to handle, but overall a great lens.

Not a good performer

By

Was able to use this lens at the same time as the original version for instant comparison under identical conditions. At 200 mounted on a CF Gitzo with RRS B60 Head, the image did not look sharp while focusing. Image file not sharp either. Tried the same with the original and was able to obtain a sharp image in the EVF and file. Stopping down did not seem to make much difference with the LE version but the original was marginally better (still good wide open) Acquiring focus was impossible at times but the old version would. This was under dark conditions. Overall the zoom was stiff and not pleasant to use. For the slight increase in width and two ounce difference would go with the original version. Its a very good performer. Regards al

Quality Glass

By

This is a great versatile lens with excellent image quality. It has a quality solid feel to it. It should not be expected to serve in low light conditions. That is a job for faster prime lenses. Out of the box, the zoom appears somewhat stiff but that goes away with use or by simply exercising it. There is no lens creep,... NONE. Yes, if you hang it on a strap, then hike or bike it may move but, well... Don't do that... not without using the lock anyhow. * The first image "mid zoom" was shot in subdued light at 54mm (79mm/35mm), f/9, .8s, 8sNDF, with a 200 ISO. A tripod was used with the long (almost one second) exposure. * The second image "full zoom" was shot in full sunlight fully extended at 200mm (300mm/35mm), f/6.3, 1/400, with a 100 ISO. This image was taken hand held. It was also cropped a bit tighter. As you can see from the second image, the Optical SteadyShot (OSS) functions well. However, as with any zoom of this range, in low or severely indirectly lighting conditions either a mono or tri pod is advised. This is an excellent lens for the money. Don't leave home without it,.. but supplement it with at least one fast prime.

SEL 18200

By

This lens is awesome. I bought it for my FS100, and couldn't be happier. The "lens-crawl" issue everyone else has been complaining about must have been resolved, as my lens does not do move unless I move it -- even when the camera faces 90 degrees to the ground. Auto-focus is super-quick and sharp, with zero CA.

Multi-purpose lens

By

This is a great multi-purpose lens. I wouldn't say it's a must have but it is certainly cover a wide range of focal length, allowing a photographer (namely me) to capture anything from landscape to portrait to macro without a need of switching lenses. As you know all photographers know full well, a perfect moment pass in a blink of an eye, a zoom lens like this one give great benefit for itself. Sony also made the lens with metal casing which provide a very strong built and feel very solid in the hand. The lens weight in at less than half a kilogram which is comparatively light. This lens fit perfectly with my new Sony Alpha NEX-7 camera.
