The extended grip gives you somethings to hold onto. The a500 is on the smaller side and this grip makes it an easy balance. Plus it holds two batteries and adds weight to the camera so it feels closer to my old 35mm SLR. I have been using a grip like this since the Canon A2, before that they were motor drives.

This grip is a great addition to your camera if you have an A500, A550, A560, or A580. With Sony, the batteries usually last a pretty long time - but when I use this grip loaded with 2 freshly charged batteries, I can get through a 10 hour wedding and not have to worry about changing batteries. The additional power is nice, but the best feature of the battery grip is how much more solid and easy-to-hold it makes your camera. I hardly ever take it off, even if I only have one battery. It makes the camera quite a bit bigger, but a LOT easier to handle. If you've got an A5xx and you can find one for less than $200, I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up.

I enjoy hiking and bird photography. The extra battery gives me the piece of mind knowing that I will not run out of power while on the trail. The construction is solid and the unit is easy to install. No complaints only praises.

The B50 vertical grip is a great companion for your a5xx series SLR. The build is absolutely the exact same as that of the camera itself, the buttons are right where you would want them to be for those vertical photos. If you're a fashion photographer or doing a lot of portraits, then having this grip is perfect for you. The grip holds 2 batteries. When the first battery dies, it will automatically switch to the other battery, so it's great battery power for a full day or 2 worth of projects. I never detach mine from my camera and keep it mounted as if the camera was made that way. Many have tried the Ebay off brand copies of this... as I haven't tried one of those and stick with Sony for all my products, I'm sure those of the off brand grips are missing out on the real deal. True Sony product that you'll enjoy.

Years ago I lost the battery door cover on my old Canon camera when I installed the battery grip and I haven't been able to use the camera without the battery grip ever since then. Sometimes it's nice to use the camera without the grip when you want to keep a low profile, or if you're on vacation.

Keep your hands steady while reducing the strain on your wrists during long photo sessions with the VG-B50AM vertical grip. Designed for use with your Sony a A500 or A550 DSLR camera, this accessory provides better control along with convenient shutter and control buttons for extra comfort while taking vertical shots.
In addition to a rugged construction, this vertical grip holds two NP-FM500H InfoLITHIUM batteries (sold separately) for up to 2,000 shots and automatically switches to backup battery power so you can enjoy uninterrupted shooting.
