Questions & Answers

ALISON K : Hi, I am just starting out. I would like to know if this is good for the Nikon D3200. In addition, I have an apartment and I am looking for something compact. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks! AlisonALISON K : Thank you Mark. Which is the best one to use for a compact space? Thank you for responding.MARK H : Alison, it works great with all our nikon's. You can fold it up and store it if need be. There ia some general assembly but nothing horrible. Would definitely recommend to anyone. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask anytime. MarkALISON K : Thank u for responding!KELLY T : This is a good product for those just starting out and is compact enough. I cannot comment on Nikon equipment since I use Canon. But this is a good set-up if you have space for shooting portraits in your home.
JOSEPH G : does this light come with the actual strobe light (bulb) and modeling light (bulb) or do customers have to buy these separate?TAMMI B : It does come with the bulb. I have enjoyed working with this light and soft box. The stand itself is a bit lower quality than my other light stands, but with a bit of care it works just fine.KELLY T : Yes it comes with the strobe bulb, that's what the Versalight J-160 Monolight Strobe is.MARK H : It comes with (2) strobe light bulbs.WAYNE C : Yes, these lights come with both modeling and strobe lights. But I would purchase a couple extra modeling lights. They do tend to burn out rather easily.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?Dale W : I bought a used set of lights and found them to be a real value for the money. I decided to round out the system with accessories Adorama has in stock and I was able to do that economically. The JTL 160 series is a winner if you need a compact, lightweight lighting system. I'd recommend it to anybody and recommend Adorama just as highly.

Simple & reliable.

Bought a pair of JTLs years ago as a backup to my Novatron kit. After my Novatron pack died, I decided to pick up another pair of JTLs. There are a few things about my old 160s that I like better, and vice versa. #1 thing though is that I'm not really impressed with the newer modeling lamp installation. It is not as robust as my older ones. I do like the switch to turn off the optical slave on the newer models.Overall, it's a nice kit for the price. Lightweight & reliable.

WARNING - These strobes electrocute!!!

I bought this strobe because the price was right for beginging photography. I used it a few times with the synch cord in my living room and it worked fine, but the moment I started using it in my garage (with concrete floors) where I had set up my studio, I would get electrocuted through my camera! I got a few pretty serious shocks. Assuming it was the synch cord that was bad, I purchased a set of wireless triggers. I tried wth the wireless trigger and receiver and had my husband hold the receiver since it was dangling in the opposite direction and ZAPP he got shocked as well. [...] These strobes do NOT have a ground wire - they only have two prongs! Not smart for such a high voltage piece of equipment!

Great Starter Light

I bought this to use along with my Canon 580 EX II speedlight flash for portraits. I have had good results so far and am very happy with it for the price.

I wish I'd bought two

An excellent value. If you question your camera's indoor abilities, try this kit. Opens tons of possibilities.

Light is OK but...

They send the kit with a bulb that is too long. I was told I had to contact JTL to get a new bulb. When I called JTL, I was told to contact [...]...run-around!FINALLY - after 2 months of phone calls to JTL they sent me a new bulb.I would buy another brand if you are considering this type of light set.

Nice, inexpensive studio lighting

I needed an inexpensive lighting system for indoor pet portraits. I HATE using artifical light, and had never used studio lighting before, but sometimes I need to shoot in less than ideal indoor lighting conditions, so I shopped around a bit to find something that I could use. I found this system [...] and decided to give it a try. Once I figured out how to set it up (the included instructions are VERY skimpy), and then figured out how to use it with the Nikon D200-- well, the results were really good. No "blue eye", good color rendition, fast recharge time. Overall, I'm really pleased with the unit, but it would be helpful if the included documentation was more complete.

Great value for money

Bought this strobe as a backlight for my table top product photograhy. I started off with the Cool Lights but ended spending way to much time correcting images. Since most of my clients want a white background for their websites I need a over exposed white background without any shadows. This strobe with softbox and a piece of Plexilite does the trick for me. The variable power is a must to keep things under controll...
