The best 800 speed stuff I've used

I love this stuff. In terms of grain, most people want to use slower speed film to get the finest, sharpest photos and scans possible, but Portra 800 is awesome. It's great to have something faster if you're outdoors and it fades to evening, and this stuff will give you the flexibility you need to keep shooting without popping on the flash. But it's great with flash too. If you happen to be bouncing a flash around indoors in a dimly lit place like a pub, for example, you'll get a lot of detail in the background to come out and expose perfectly using Portra 800. Because it's color/tonal range is so good, it's useful for everything from shooting a sunset outdoors to an indoor party to portraiture. Ultimately, Portra 800's grain isn't quite as fine as the 400 speed Portra films, but it's still very fine and you won't at all be disappointed. In fact, I prefer Portra 800's colors to the ones you get with either 400VC or 400NC. They are all excellent, professional-grade films, but Porta 800 has a delicate tonal range and saturation that just has something special about it. This is one film you should definitely have in your repertoire. It's my pick for ISO 800 speed film.

Is it really ISO 800?

Whenever I shoot this, I feel that it shouldn't be rated at 800. Shooting at ISO 800 results in photos that appear to be underexposed. This is opposed to Portra 400 which results in a perfect exposure at ISO 400. I would find a way to make Porta 400 work.

There's Something About Film

By

from middle USA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I use film in art photography - capturing moments of life seen in a different way, life not taken for granted, little celebrations of humanity that we pass by every day. Photographic film portrays those things with a richness and depth that digital cannot capture. It breaths life into the one dimensional image seen on paper or on a computer screen. Portra 800 allows the photographic artist to convey natural, breathing colors and textures that the most expensive digital sensor just records.

Best choice for live music

By

from Dallas, TX  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I've been photographing live music in dark clubs for 13 years, and rotated through a number of 35mm film options from Kodak and Fuji in that time. For bold saturated color in music clubs with unpredictable lighting conditions, this is my consistent go to choice as it is the best film available in the digital age for my specisalization. Looks fantastice when push processed.

The Secret Weapon

By

from Trimble, TN  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is the best 800 speed film I've ever used. It's like magic. It enables me to shoot hand-held at 300mm in all but the lowest outdoor light levels. And it looks great.

Fast Portra Gets Dynamic Results

By

from Wakefield, RI  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I used Portra to shoot a Chinese children's choir for a global cultural exchange in a college auditorium. The setting was theatrical lighting-mostly spotlit shots, some with a mix of colors-and the results were dynamic. The photos were shared with friends all over the world and everyone was impressed with the colors and the dramatic tonal values. I'm still shooting the old fashioned way and Portra will make it very hard to say good bye to film shooting.

Portra 800 Works Great For Weddings

By

from Jax, FL  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This film has very little grain, and the slightly muted colors look nice for wedding photos. 800 speed is helpful when I can't use a strobe during the ceremony, and also means less flash needed than when using 400 in the near dark of most receptions.

This is a great film for wildlife photography - fast for both long lenses and toi stop any action the wildlife may be undertaking.

My favorite film on the market. Works with my SLR camera to create constant consistent quality shots that hold up well over time. It's the best!
