Questions & Answers

Shopper : What is the main difference between pro 300 vs mc4 dgx?BRUCE D : Sorry I don't know as I didn't get both. My shopping experiences with Adorama, however have been great!STEPHEN R : I got the mc4 dgx because it will allow the camera to see the right EXIF information from the lens whereas th Pro 300 will not.
Mike M : I have a Sony A65 and want to use this my Sigma 70-200mm lens (the new model). Do you see any issues?FILLED WITH L : nope. I have used this with the same lens (Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM), and it's worked well. Just check the focus on the images when first using it; the first one I had was a "dud" where the AF didn't work properly. I exchanged it for a different one (Adorama was very good) and the second one was tack sharp.ANTHONY K : I have a Sony A350 and a Sony A77 and it works with all of my Sony Lenses, 16-80mm, 70-300mm and 70-400mm. I do not have any off brand lenses, but they should all work.BRANDON T : No issues. I use the A77 and the older non OS Sigma 70-200 lens, and they are a very good match. It increases the CA, but resolution is very good. I did lots and lots of research on teleconverters, and this is one of the best out there.KATHEE T : No issues. As long as you get the kenko with the Sony ."a" mount. THOMAS K : I have not used one on the Sigma lens, but I have used it on a Tamron 70-300 and a Tamron 60mm Macro lens. I have used both a Sony A33 and a Sony A57 as the body I have had no problems with communication between camera bodies and these lenses. I do have to manual focus the telephoto lens at longer lengths. If your Sigma is the F2.8 model there should be no problem with auto-focus. I mostly use it on the macro lens and have very sharp pictures. Using it on the telephoto lens at the 300 mm end is pushing the limits of that lens and the pictures are a little soft.ANNA R : I use it with a77 and 70-400 G2 with no visible lack of sharpness, never used it with Sigma. Good luck with it.JIM J : I use in on a Sony 75-300 and have not had a problem.CHRISTINE K : I don't see any problems with this. Mine worked fine with a Sony A55 & A 77. It drained the battery on the A55, even when the camera was turned off, but I haven't had any issues with it since I got my A77. Something to be aware of.D K K : Works fine, no issues! AF and metering seem to be fine, I occasionally use mine with a f2.8 80-200, as a compromise on the -300mm kit lens. Opted for the 1.4x instead of the 2x to avoid another step loss, but wouldn't hesitate to use a 2x if the light was right.JOHN T : I don't think you'll have any problems with your lens, but I don't have a Sigma 70-200. There is always a slight degradation in sharpness with a teleconverter, so however sharp your Sigma is now it will be just a little bit less sharp with the teleconverter. I primarily use mine with a 135mm zeiss f1.4 and it hunts more in low light with the teleconverter. Bottom line, teleconverters are always a compromise, but given that, this one is very good.DOMENICK L : Kenko makes a good product but as with all converters there's a price to pay. You'll lose a stop or more so low light isn't a good idea. You'll also lose a little sharpness and with a Sigma lens you can't really afford that. My personal opinion is the excellent camera deserves a better quality lens to get the most out of it, like the Sony G series. Having said that, the Kenko is a top of the line converter and yes, within limits you'll find it useful.CHRISTOPHER U : I have used it with my Tamron SP 70-200MM F/2.8 Di USD lens and the focus is slow, much to slow for sports photography.
Shopper : Does anyone know how it will perform with Tamron 60mm 2.0 macro? Will it slow autofocus (which is slow as is)? Body is a77. Thanks.JOHN T : I haven't used the Kenko Teleplus MC4 1.4x DGX teleconverter with the Tamron 60mm 2.0 macro lens, but I have used it with the Minolta 50mm f/1.7 and Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 lenses. I haven't noticed autofocus being slower. I think with a fast lens, and f/2.0 is fast, you shouldn't see a noticeable difference in autofocus speed. I do see a slight loss in sharpness. My body is an A99.STEPHEN R : Sorry- don't have that lens but on my 10-20mm Sigma and my 100mm f2 MACRO it does not slow focus.DOMENICK L : I haven't the slightest idea for that specific lens. On my Sony G series lenses it degrades performance overall. The longer the focal length the worse it gets. What are you doing putting a cheap lens like a Tamron on an a77? You're already degrading the camera's performance as it is.CHRISTOPHER U : Obviously you lose one stop of light, so at smaller apertures focus could be worse. I am not familiar with your lens however. My focus with the A77 and Tamron 70-300 is OK in good light.MICHAEL S : The Kenko Teleplus MC4 1.4x DGX Teleconverter works very well with the Sony A77 and Tamron 60mm macro lens. I cannot see any degradation of the image quality. I also use it with the Sigma 150mm macro lens. It is not supposed to work well with lenses that are slower than f2.8 but I have used it with my Tamron 70-300mm lens in well lit situations. However, in that case, I'm not sure that I'm getting any better image quality than if I hadn't used the teleconverter but intead had cropped the image.

Excellent lens

I am using this lens with my Nikon D3300 camera. I got it mainly to boost the DF-S ED 70-300 lens I have. Not had a whole lot of time with it so far but in manual mode the shots I have taken have turned out. I highly recommend it for the photographer on a budget.

A bit soft

I used this with a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon 18-200 telephoto lens. It goes on the camera easily and the lens attaches easily. There is a small amount of play but not enough to be sensed during use. The lens autofocuses and extends reach as expected. The image seems to loose about 1 1/2 stops of light with the teleconverter, about what I expected, but that makes using the teleconverter marginal or unusable at dawn, late afternoons, on very cloudy days, or when the subject is in shade. Pictures came out a bit softer than without the teleconverter in all light, even bright sunshine. I don't know if that's due to optics, higher ISO, or slower shutter speed. Without it being a conscious decision, I find that I'm not using this, even in bright sunlight. I'd probably not buy this again and not recommend its use for my main subjects, birds.

Good product, excellent customer service

This teleconverter is nice because it gives the real f-stop of the lens plus the converter and sends the full EXIF data to the image file. However, the first one I received had major auto-focusing issues and major chromatic aberration. Adorama was very helpful in giving me return shipping and exchanging the first one; what a difference! The sharpness is the best I've seen in a teleconverter, and it has been my new favorite toy for portrait shoots. Four stars only for first one being a dud.

Got TWO!

Have Kenko 1.4x & 2.0x and use with TAMRON 70 to 200mm f2.8 on a Sony 77a Body. 1.4x is easy focus. Slightly less resolution than with out Extender but highly acceptable.

Did just what I wanted it to do.

I had been using a 75mm to 300mm filming dragonflies and needed a little more reach. Mission accomplished. Jim

Works as Described

I am using this with the Nikon 24mm - 120mm f4 and it is giving fast accurate focus and adds a decent reach. The lens becomes an f5.6 but is quite manageable in most cases.

Surprisingly Good and Beyond Expectation

I purchased this primarily for use with an older, fast lens (Nikkor 80-200 f2.8). Out of curiosity, I tried it with a newer, slow lens (Nikon 18-300) and was pleasantly surprised to find that the auto focus and metering worked perfectly with no discernable loss of image quality. I use this setup in a bird blind with a flash unit so the largest effective aperture when zoomed to 300mm, f.8, still allows fast enough shutter speeds.

Better than expected.

I bought this primarily for use with an older Nikkor 80-200 2.8 lens with which it works well with no discenable loss of image quality. Out of curiosity, I tried it with a Nikkor 18-300 lens, a slower lens, and found that the auto focus and metering work well. Because I use a flash for most shots, I can get excellent images at apertures of f8-f11. Very happy with this item.

And it talks to my a77 !!!

I needed 500mm but didn't want to spend $5000. Plus any added physical length is just a hindrance and obviously even heavier. Plus I need variability. This unit combined with the SAL70400g is a fantastic combo and the surprise is that the EXIF data is transfered to my a77! Evidently there were at one time two different models of teleconverter by Kenko, one being a 'pro' model. This model however is perfect for my needs and give surprisingly good results for an amateur.

An incredible bargain!

I bought this product at the recommendation of a fellow photographer specifically for use with the Canon 70-300L lens. Of course you need to be shooting with a Canon Series 1 body which will enable you to AF @f8 with this converter. I was initially skeptical that something this inexpensive could deliver quality images, especially since this lens is incompatible with Canon converters but I was dead wrong... this converter is a gem! I've gotten crisp, sharp images on the 70-300L with this converter

Perfectly normal teleconverter

A perfectly normal teleconverter. Does just what it should. As with any teleconverter I have tried it does decrease image sharpness a little bit, but not by much. For the price, it is a really good one. Works well with the lenses I have tried it with (of various brands).

First TC...

I purchased this product to add reach to one 200mm and one 300mm lens. From my relatively short experience, it appears that this product does the job intended. Resolution is not degraded and the loss of one stop is acceptable.

Some serious Vignette on the 100-400 L

I tried this tele-converter with my EOS 5D mark 2. Very reasonable results with the 24-105 L series lens and I got very good auto focus on the 100-400 L series lens, but at the full extent of the lens's magnification you get some serious vignette. Bad enough to make it unusable.

Placed between the camera body and lens, a teleconverter contains a set of optics that will effectively increase the focal length of any lens with which it is used. The Kenko TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4x DGX converter has the effect of multiplying the focal length of your lens by 1.4x. The MC4 AF 1.4x DGX converter has genuine Gate Array IC (Integrated Circuitry). It means the converter's unique circuitry maintains signal integrity between the camera body and lens.

The 4-element design is made with high quality multi-coated optical glass supplied by Hoya Corporation, the world's largest manufacturer of optical glass. Full AF operation with the TelePlus MC4 AF 1.4x is possible using camera lenses with open apertures of F4 or brighter. AF will work properly only if there is enough light and contrast on the subject to activate the camera's AF sensors properly. (Manual focusing may be necessary when using lenses with smaller open f-stop values than that given above.)

The DGX TelePlus converters have updated circuitry to record exif data more accurately. In the exif exposure data (meta-data recorded with a digital picture) DGX converters record the equivalent aperture and focal length of the lens setting plus teleconverter. Optically and mechanically they are identical to the prior high-quality DG series converters.
