This a great all around scope if you are looking to purchase only one. 100 yds is about the limit for a 3 - 9 x 40. For longer yardage like 200 to 300 yds a higher power like 4 - 12 would be better.

The VX-I is, simply put, the best scope in its class. No other riflescope will give you the performance and features, which now include Leupold's Ballistic Aiming System, for such a low price. The Leupold VX-I offers hunters Leupold quality and accuracy, affordability, and a lifetime guarantee...for the money, you won't find a better scope, or a better warranty. The VX-I is also available in Leupold's attractive matte black finish, as well as the traditional gloss black finish.
Doing yeoman's service for the VX-I product group, the economically priced VX-I 3 - 9 x 40mm is the heir to the great 3 - 9x tradition started by Leupold more than 40 years ago. Its mid-range magnification levels and its moderate size make it extremely adaptable to a wide range of shooting conditions and game. This is an ideal scope for both the beginner and the experienced, budget conscious hunter.
