This is a wonderful tool for the person wanting to mat and frame their work. It works great. Simple to use and straight forward instructions. The cuts come out perfect. The anti-creep pin is a great idea. I have used cutters without this feature, and the process is more complex. The only complaint I have is I had to add shims to the right angle guild to get a square cut on full size mat boards. For the price it is a great machine.
The mat cutter works great - about what I expected. I'm moving up from an inexpensive Alto mat cutter. Getting used to pulling to cut rather than pushing didn't take long, and having a squaring arm and a cutter made specifically for squaring up matboard and foamboard is really great. Now, I just have to remember to hook the cutters into the guide rail before making a cut. I would caution users to make sure to check for squareness once the squaring arm is installed. There are a couple of tiny adjustment screws in the arm slot to fine tune the arm before tightening it down to the board. (Once done, check squareness again, and repeat as necessary - this is not covered in the instructions.) The only real issue I had was with the shipping from Adorama. The unit arrived in the OEM box - without any additional packing for shipment. Checking for damage, there was a corner - the corner where the squaring arm slot is - that was damaged enough that I had to send the product back. Customer service was only adequate through it all (I would have preferred more communication), and a month later, even though being assured that this time around they would ship the unit in an outer shipping box, the replacement arrives - once again - in the OEM box! Got lucky this time... no damage. I'm OK with the mat cutter, but no more Adorama for me. (This was my first - and last - order from them.)
For semi pro use, this is a great mat cutter. I've cut around 50 mats so far and I get consistent results. You do have to be careful when cutting the window as it has a tendency to not cut fully through the mat board. Swap out the blade often to avoid having to make multiple passes. If you need to cut lots of mats, but can't or don't want to go for the professional cutters, this is a great option. Be aware: to prevent the baseboard from warping you must store the cutter flat. If you're short on table/shelf space this may not be a good option for you.
I haven't used this a lot yet but I believe it does take a little practice to get just the perfect cuts. I found that the bevel cutter may slip just a little at the end of a cut to create a bit of a dip in the corner. I had to be very careful when I got to the corners to make sure this didn't happen. The straight cutter worked well but the paper cutter is so so. Didn't seem to want to cut evenly and I had to go back a forth several times to get the paper all cut. I have a pro paper cutter that works much better. Haven't used the glass cutter yet. Certainly it works far better than a basic hand cutter as it keeps the matt firmly in place, is much easier to measure accurate cuts and does have multiple uses.
