The Lowepro Photo Hatchback 22L AW Backpack (Galaxy Blue) is an excellent choice for a day out in the field, walk along the boardwalk with the family or even a quick down and dirty gig. It's designed to hold your DSLR with an 18-105mm lens attached and two or three additional moderately sized lenses, flash, accessories as well as your iPad or tablet held safely within its own dedicated compartment.
The "wow" feature of this bag is that it comes with a removable camera box which, when removed, turns the pack into a full-fledged, empty pack that can be used as a daypack. The camera box comes with a storm flap for protection and two handles for easy removal. Load it beforehand, place it in the pack and you're off. And, on days when you don't need it, just lift it out and the pack is ready for clothes, books, food, jacket or groceries.
Access is via a top loading zippered opening or its very handy side "hatch" for rapid retrieval of your camera when the shot appears. All the zippers are YKK for added durability. The 2.1 lb pack is comfortable with its adjustable backpack straps. This is an outdoor pack that is prepared for all weather eventualities since it contains Lowepro's All-Weather cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns against you. The Photo Hatchback is made from strong 600D polyester and 210D nylon ripstop polyurethane-a combination made for the outdoor enthusiast.
OK, so, the idea that you're going to tuck away your camera behind your back ... nope. I'm going to tuck some lenses back there, sure, but then I'm going to want to put the camera body with attached lens into the top compartment ... except that the top compartment isn't large enough to tuck away a full-sized Canon 7D with attached battery grip & a long lens. It's just not going to happen. So, this means that where my Slinger could handle everything but a couple of extra lenses, and this bag can hold everything so long as there's a short lens on the body, I'm going to have to say that I'm going to revert to my Slinger, despite the one-shouldered ergonomics of that bag. Basically, if you've got a setup with more than 3 lenses, this bag doesn't work. Additionally, the only portion of the bag that's padded is the bottom section, which means whatever's in the top is going to get dinged. Not a feature.
Perfect except... it is falling apart with very little use. I am currently traveling in the UK and it is all I have so I can't send it back. When I return in July I doubt Lowepro or Adorama will accept it as a return (I once tried to return a pack to Lowepro and they would not accept it). Too bad after 25 years with Lowepro I may try Tamrac or something else...
I bought the bag to have for an 11 day cruise to the Panama Canal coming up in March. I took it on a quick trip to WI in January. It comfortably fit my camera Canon Rebel with the 70-300 mm lenses attached if I turned it sideways. Body and lense was approx. 8 1/2" long. I can fit the camera with its 55-135mm attached the way the bag is designed and fit another lens. I was pleasantly surprised at the room for my wallet, Ipad, book, and other "carry" on items in the front portion of the bag. I found NO cons to this bag as a casual photographer
Great backpack for the urban explorer, hiker, or everyday travel. Holds a lot of gear and everything you would need. I bought 1 for my film camera and then bought 2 more for my digital slr and to hold a GoPro, acc., and a second dslr.
I purchased this pack for an upcoming hiking trip. I was concerned that it might be too large for my mirrorless setup. It isn't. Its a very nice compact bag that would work well with a large mirrorless camera kit or a smallish DSLR kit. You could probably use a large DSLR, but then you would be limited to just one or two lenses. The top part of the pack holds a decent amount, but the whole pack is very nice and light and seems very well built. Very happy with my purchase.
A very useful backpack. Holds my Nikon D7000 with 18-105 lens attached, normal lens, small flash and filters in bottom compartment, plus a couple pounds of gear in the padded upper compartment. Outer sleeve holds an iPad, plus small tripod or two water bottles on the side. Bottom camera compartment only open from the back side, so you have to remove it in order to gain access to your gear -- great safety precaution.
Perfect for day trips, and the double use as just a day bag is a bonus. Perfect size and quality construction.
I love my Hatchback Pro. Primarilary I use it for my camera and equipment when I go on a photo shoot with our camera club. I also find it indispensable when traveling. It safely holds camera, equipment, iPad and other electronic "stuff". It also holds a change of clothes if the airline "misplaces" my luggage. The bag is lightweight and comfortable to carry.it is a treasure. So glad that I bought it.
