Questions & Answers

Ike C : Why did you choose this umbrella over the Photoflex 60" convertible umbrella ( UMRUT60 )? Has anyone compared the pros and cons of these two umbrellas in terms of quality of light diffused or reflected, build quality and durability, ease of removing/putting back the black material, etc? I think the Photoflex has fiberglass ribs and shaft, which is supposedly more durable?VARICK T : Its costs was why I choose it over Photodex. I love the built and quality of my Adorama 60 White. Plus they are probably made by the same companiesFELIX M : For me was the price, since I didn't own one. I got it and I was surprised with the quality. It look strong and for my use it serve the purpose. Having said that, if you are going to be using it in the field under all kinds of weather conditions you may wants something like the Photoflex. Hope this help!STEPHEN F : While I cannot comment on a comparison of another umbrella, I did buy the Adorama 60" 3 years ago. It is massive and a bit cumbersome to get the full effect but it works for me. It does really well with reflecting and shoot through. I use it much more for reflect because I find the shoot through to be too overpowering due to its sheer size and spread capacity. The removable cover to convert to a shoot through is easy to remove/replace. One thing I can say about the metal shaft is that when I tighten my light stand to secure the umbrella using the Adorama umbrella bracket, there are grooves/scratches left on the shaft. I am an intermediate photographer and I use it for indoor portrait work, I have not used it outdoors.TED H : hi I purchased this because it was a better value. It depends on how much you will use this, as to if it's worth getting a better one. this one seems to be fine. tedERIC H : It was on sale when I bought the 60" umbrella. It has the metal ribs which are lighter than fiberglass, but not as durable. I had the umbrella fall over( good wind sail, my stand was weighted) and bent the ribs. Still worked with a little rebending. The cover is easy to take off and put back on. I thought the light quality was good. Reflected and shoot-thru. I have compared it to Wescott, not much difference in light quality. Overall a decent umbrella for primary use or backup. I would buy again when it is on sale.
Shopper : does it have white fiberglass ribbing and is the rod a 7mm solid rod or something cheaper. Also, what makes the black cover reflective on the inside?NOEL DEL P : It is a sturdy umbrella including the white material.WILLIAM B : Ribbing is metal, rod is hollow tubing w/ plugs for strength. Black cover has white lining. As sturdy as any umbrella I've used. By nature umbrellas are kinda fragile.
Shopper : what is the stem length of this umbrella, I plan to use this with 580 ex II and was wondering if it has enough room to be placed properly?ANDREW J : I'm not sure of the exact length but it's pretty long. I use a 430ex and ex || and it fits in there with plenty on room left. I can measure it later.KAREN JENKINS - M : The length is a little under three feet - you're going to have the bottom of the umbrella pushing up against most light stands several inches before you get to the end of the metal bit seeing how it's a five foot diameter. I'm currently using it with an old manual Sunpak hot shoe flash, not a 120J or anything fancy like that, and there's plenty of room to cover the whole umbrella, or bring it in tight for much more concentrated light.MICHAEL M : I dont know the exact measurement but there's no problem with length especially with a speedliteLISA F : I'm not sure off the top of my head, but with an umbrella adapter to put your 580 EX2 you will be fine. I have that flash and have no problems. BTW: This is a great umbrella!WILLIAM B : 35" from the surface of the umbrella to the tip of the stem.ROBERT F : tip to tip 37.5 inches

Big umbrella

BUild is OK. I found that the umbrella seems to require a lot of power from the light source, even when only used a fill. In order to use as a key light it would have to be quite close to the subject or you'd have to have a high powered light. I found that models complained more than normal of the light being really bright. Maybe I need to do some more experimentation to use this umbrella correctly.

Most Excellent Umbrella - Great Price

This umbrella is very useful. Works like a dream giving you nice wrap around soft light. I own two, I use them with and without shower caps (Westcott's 7' diffusers work just fine on them). Use them for main, BG or with your filllights.

You can't go wrong

I was so happy with the first one of these I purchased and the lighting it produced with my Bowens lights, I purchased a second one.

Good for the price

Large and Heavy, suggest you use a sandbag to hold the light stand down. Good materials (But some defects in workmanship, sewing at the top was coming undone when new out of the box, I fixed it with glue). The frame/spokes are plastic instead of metal (I actually like the plastic better, it doesn't get permanently deformed/bent, and is easy to bend and spring back when taking off the black cover). The white material is thin (good for shoot through, but not much light comes back when using as a reflective source with black cover, so I spray painted the inside of black cover white, to double the light for reflections when using black cover). Was shipped in nice double boxes, to protect from shipping damage, (Outer box was torn, but inner box and umbrella were fine).

Good Stuff

This creates a very flattering light on all subjects. Due to its size and non overpowering reflective material, the light is unsurpassed. I love soft boxes all sizes and shapes. But since this is so easy to use and results are always predictable, I am changing my ways. I use it for all types of subject matter not just portraits.

Happily surprised with the quality!

Using two of these in studio and on location. Perfect portrait shoot through or reflected. Durable construction, moderately light. The only thing missing that I would like better is a silver reflective surface on the inside of the black cover. Would bounce more light better.

Fill Light anyone?

I use this product as a fill for portraits and for other large areas where I need a soft light. Good cheap umbrella that dose the job of much more expensive models.

exceptional value

I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY FOR THE PRICE. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO GET SOMTHING REALLY FLIMSEY BUT I WAS SURPRISED. IT APPEARS TO BE MADE OUT OF SOME DECENT MATERIALS. IT IS STILL A UMBRELLA SO IT SHOULD BE USED AND CARED FOR ACCORDLING. AS FOR ITS FUNCTION IT WORKS GREAT.

Bigger than Described.

I am 5'9" tall...this thing is taller than me by at least 5 inches.... Considering 60" is 5 feet. this is more like a 6 foot umbrella. it also folds to 35/36 inches, so that in itself says how big it is when doubled. around 70 inches..compared to the 7 foot umbrellas this is a steal! the only cons are it is bigger than expected when compared to other brands...be warned..this thing is HUGE but great for the money. if you are looking for a smaller umbrella, look elsewhere. but for the price...snag this as well for versatility!

Real 60" umbrella

This is a huge umbrella. The diameter of 60" is the real distance from rim to rim directly, not going along the back. The shaft must be solid, leaving no dents after mounted on a umbrella holder. The black back with silver inner layer is removable. 16 rib looks sturdy.

Good economical product

Works great. Good light quality. Umbrellas are never very sturdy, so I like them to be not too pricey.

Great buy and great price

This Umbrella does a lot for the money that you spend on it. I found that in some locations that I have to shoot the Umbrella is too big but found that if I collasp it a little it still doesa a great job. It does give out a large about of light to light the area weather I am shooting one person or severial.

The black backing can be removed to create a "shoot through" umbrella which will give you a softbox lighting effect. Great for still life setups or single light head & shoulder portraits. Use a colored filter in front of the light for some really special effects.
