About Meade ETX-90 AT

The Meade ETX-90 Portable Observatory Package is a 90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope. This compact instrument is very easy to transport. The telescope itself is less than 10 pounds. Its 3.5" aperture, Maksutov-Cassegrain optics has a 1250 mm focal length with a f/13.8 focal ratio, it delivers satisfying celestial observations with clarity and detail.

The dual-fork Altazimuth mount works with the AutoStar #497 controller to deliver Go-To ability for over 30,000 databaseobjects. The AutoStar Suite Planetarium Software for PCs allows total computer control of the mount and telescope. A Red-Dot viewfinder accelerates the manual location of celestial objects. Ultra-High Transmission Coatings (UHTC)in the optics with the included Super Plossl 26 mm and Super Plossl 9.7 mm eyepieces provide increased light transmission and superior optical performance.

An adjustable steel leg tripod provides solid support for the mount and scope. The scope is powered by 6 user-supplied AA batteries or an optional AC power adapter. A protective carrying case is also included with the package.

Questions about this item:

Richard T  What types of viewing is this scope best suited for? I expect to use this scope in New York, Buenos Aires, Helsinki and Nanjing. What special accessories should I consider?
RALPH C  You question suggests a lot of travel and therefore requirement for portability. This is the very reason I made the Meade ETX-90 my second scope. I wanted to quickly toss a scope into my car or into my RV after work and be quickly out to a site for some observing, or to take a scope on a weekend camping trip. The travel case, and tripod bag that come with the Observatory is essential for easy travel. Besides my scope and tripod bag, all I now need to pack is a small plastic tool box which I use to carry all my other odds-and-ends for observing. I added to my basic purchase of the Observatory Kit, a 3rd party cover for those weekends that I might be camping out and want to leave my scope set-up for several days. And, I added a flexible dew shield and heat source for those humid evenings when I wanted to observe long into the night. I will also use my set of basic colored filters when a little contrast might enhance planetary observing. Lastly, if you are viewing from a city you might also consider a special filter for observing near ambient city lights. Since I enjoy taking first-timers/students out with me to observe, the data and tours available on the AutoStar Hand Controller provides plenty of information even for me as an experienced observer. With my other scope (a SCT 8" SCT) I was always seeking out the faintest nebulae; but, with my ETX-90 I am re-discovering moon and planetary observing -- and for the first time really wanting to learn star names! I also believe my ETX-90 will be the perfect scope for my new "love": comet observation. I have always love the superior quality of Meade telescopes and my ETX-90 has a bundle full of features for a very reasonable price. It is hard not to love this machine!
