First use was at a campsite at night. Didn't quite like the effect I was getting with TTL. Tried to switch to manual mode only to find it doesn't have one. Ended up playing with the shutter/aperature combination to get the what I wanted. Was able to get a good focus in virtual darkness but definately had to have more patience than I used to when I was shooting college parties with my old EOS film camera. Still consider it a good value as I got this for under $100 where the Canon Speedlites go for up to $400.

Good flash for the price but it is not of the same construction quality like the older Metz. The worst part is the battery compartment door which is not easy to open especially when there are batteries inside and that makes changing batteries a hassel. I have an old Sunpak 422D which has one of the best designed battery compartment door of any flash I have used thru the years.I used it on a G10, mainly indoors. Wish it has a build-in diffuser. • The Metz 36AF-4 Flash is the dedicated E-TTL version in the the Metz 36 series and will provide high-precision E-TTL exposure accuracy, even with digital SLR cameras. Furthermore, the integrated zoom reflector can be manually adjusted to the given focal length (between 28 and 85 mm), and the reflector can be tilted a vertical direction 90°. It is a great all-purpose medium class flash for amateurs.
