Mixed feelings

By

from Santa Clarita, CA  -  Pro Photographer

My friend and I we both buy it the same day. He is Nikon guy I am not. On his nikon it works ... let say not bad. I tested it on Sony A77 and that was disaster. It is 21 century and this thing has no Red Eye on Sony if in use as a slave. also no HSS ( high speed sync ) Recycling time is great only if you are shooting sleeping turtle and the best joke on the end - no manual mode if on slave :) that is fun. Positives: build like tank, good light output. Surprises: nothing in the box but flush. Virtually nothing. No case/bug no even mounting bracket.. nothing ...

power at a great price...

By

powerful, well built flash at a very good price point. best as a remote fill and in close focus situations. sluggish recycle may be an issue. overall a great add to the bag.

SWEET - better than Sony equivalent

By

from Charlotte, The Queen City, NorthCarolina  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Didn't want to drop $$ on Sony and did lots of research to find best alternative. This was best balance of price and performance for my use and I couldn't be happier. Awesome simple imterface (5 buttons!), good recycle time and consistent output. Made me comfortable buying a new Metz for my Nikon!

The answer for Sony Alpha owners

By

from Fernley, NV  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I own two Sony flash units, an older Minolta and a Vivitar Series 1. Since buying this unit, I find that it's the one I reach for in ANY situation. The stereotypic build quality and precision that one tends to associate with products from Germany are present in this light, and there really isn't anything negative that I can find to say about it. Even the Owner's Manual is in readable English (and five other languages).

Questions about this item:

Bidul L  Hello, I bought it for my EOS 350D. Metz says this flash is capable of rear curtain sync, if the camera shows the option. My 350D built-in flash works perfectly and can be configured on first or rear curtain sync, but not the 44 AF-1: it always fire on 1st curtain (Using Tv or M long exposures) Any clue?
Andrew R  Things to check: Did you set 2nd curtain sync in the custom functions? This may need to be done as a custom function instead of flash control setting. Was a 2nd curtain function available on the flash unit itself? Try setting it on the flash unit if possible. *Canon does indicate that under some conditions the XT/350D will fire a "pre-flash" but then fire the flash normally afterwards.
Carmine D  Hello! Is this product suitable for analogic EOS Cameras? (EOS 30V) or does it work only on digital bodies? Thanks a lot! Carmine Italy
RUBEN C  Yes it will work OK on all EOS cameras, but not on older cameras. Nice flash by the way
Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
RUBEN C  Metz reputation and price. Flash made in Germany
