I Love This Lens

No lens is perfect. This one comes close. Pictures are sharp through much of the zoom range. I have taken this lens through the jungles of Costa Rica as well as the mountains of Glacier National Park and it has stood up well to dampness, humidity, cold, and wind. At times I could use an extra stop or two in speed, but for the money, one cannot do much better.

A nice walkaround and travel lens

Bought this lens around 3 years ago for my D5000 and now use it on the D7000. It's a great lens for travel and every day, but it can be a slow lens, especially when zoomed out. I still use it along with my 35mm and 50mm primes and macro lens, probably 50% of the time. If shooting indoors without a flash, it really is not adequate, so be prepared for that. Otherwise, for the price, it's a very good and useful lens.

an almost-perfect lens

I have the older version without the lock, so mine has a tendency to creep which is only slightly annoying. Otherwise it's perfect!

Daily-work & all round lens

Easy to handle for a fast photographer' reaction.Wide zoom range of over 11x, easy to change from wide to tele or viceversa.Excellent and constant results, with no missed shots due to slow focus. Very good results on the tele end, for shots without tripod, due to VR-II.I replaced, one month ago, my two Nikon AF-S DX VR: 18-55 and 55-200 with this 18-200 lens. With this 18-200 lens I get similar results, with less pain. No more wasted shots and time, due to the lens change. It was a difficult decision to choose between 18-105, 16-85 or 18-200. I analized the optical characteristics from the tests posted on [@]. I observed that 18-200 give in only two instances fair resolution on MTF50: 1,309 at border, f/3.5, 18mm, and 1,305 at extreme border, f/5.6, 100mm. The average MTF resolution of 18-200 is, for all major apertures and zoom values: 1,993 in center (excellent)1,742 at border (very good)1,549 at extreme corners. (good)The 16-85 lens has no zones with bad or fair resolution. In all zones of the format the resolution is good, very good, or excellent. The average MTF for 16-85 was: 2,097 in center (excellent)1,934 at border (very good)1,833 at corners (very good). The printed photos did not show this difference for prints up to A4 or even at A3 format. Distorsion is better controlled in 16-85 (the range of barrel and pincussion is half that in 18-200), but my Nikon D5000 and Adobe can help a lot. Canon AF-S 17-85mm IS has similar distorsions as Nikon G AF-S 18-200mm DX-II. Vigneting is better controlled in 16-85 than in 18-200. As a general rule I prefer to use smaller f-stops (f/5.6 or f/8). Chromatic aberrations and purple fringing are quite well controlled in both cases, and, Adobe or Picture Window Pro can help. Both lenses have similar special optics and give similar optic quality, 2 extra low dispersion and 3 aspherical elements: 16 elements in 12 groups at 18-200 and 17 elements in 11 groups in 16-85. AF-S and VR-II are working very good. Internal focusing is a plus. M/A is important especially for movies on my D5000 (AF is not working for movie). The 16-85 has smaller filter (67mm) and 18-200 has 72mm. The sizes of the two lenses are in the same range, but 18-200 is a bit larger and heavier with 80g.I did not get any lens creep in the field. The build / mechanical quality was expected to be closer to pro grade lenses, with less average plastic quality, considering the price range. The higher price of 18-200 is the tribute for the double zoom range, at the approx. same quality.Still, the price difference is still high.18-200 is longer, heavier, has less one optical elemnt, and the hood is not well-fitted.In the field, the most important is the range of zoom, in order to get the action in the adequate frame. I started to appreciate this lens more and more, being a versatile and trusted tool in difficult conditions.

Yes I would buy this lens again.

I just purchased thie lens last Month and it will replace my original lens that came with my Nikon D80 which was a 18-135mm lens. It really is great. Works just as well on my D200.

Great all-purpose zoom lens

The perfect zoom lens for shooting in a desert environment. Terrific zoom range. No need to expose camera body to dust, etc changing lenses. This lens does it all. Fast, crisp focus. Lightweight mounted on Nikon D300. No color aberrations. Pleased it included tulip hood. This is a super all-purpose zoom!

A Very Useful Sharp Lens

A very useful lens for DX format cameras! It's wide zoom range coupled with sharp images make this an extremely versatile lens. If you want a do everything lens for a Nikon DX format camera, this is it. Manual and autofocus is fast and precise. The VR works well at 200mm. Of course other specialty lens work the best in their niche but this lens covers a wide range and does it well. I have used it with the Nikon D40, D90 and D300 all with excellent results. This lens is optimized for DX format cameras. I've used it on a D700 and D3 and it works but I don't recommend using it on FX format cameras. This is because autocropping to avoid vignetting when using a DX lens on an FX format camera dramatically reduces the useful sensor area. This voids any advantage a FX format camera has over a DX format camera when using a DX format lens. I wish they made this lens for FX format cameras.

I like it.

Bought so I wouldn't have to cart two lenses around while travelling. Great for this purpose. A faster lens would be better since I rarely have a tripod handy, so lower light pics are going to suffer. But I was barely able to justify the price of this lens and the D90 body I mated it to, so the 2.8 200mm will have to wait. Images seem plenty good enough, a definite step up from my point and shoots. I don't analyze every pixel in every pic I shoot though.

My first digital camera lens

This lens was recommended to me by a photographer, he said that this would be a good lens to start with. It would have been nice if it came with a manual. I am a beginner and have never worked with digital cameras and all the other stuff you need to use a digital SLR.

Almost only lens you need!

Like the headline says, with this lens on the camera, you can cover just about all your shooting situations. Good reason to love this lens. Some people have experienced lens-creep, but I have had no trouble at all with that with my lens.

Perfect All Purpose Lens

Perfect for photo walking. Its an all purpose lens. If you want to carry your camera all day long (even to work), get this lens. Vibration Reduction really excels at full zoom. The lens its a little on the heavy size but it complements the size and weight of my D90. A D40-D60 may feel a little unbalance, but it will definitely do the work. It would be perfect if it was a little bit faster , for shallow DOF, a nice touch for portrait photography. Highly recommended.

Multiple features, design, and performance are all outstanding. Able to get shots quickly and easily that might otherwise be lost.

Great Buy

I bought this lens on the recommendation of a professional photographer. My wife & I travel and I was looking for a 'do everything' lens. I have not been disappointed. I recommend this lens.

Amazing

What a great lens. Paired with my D90, the focus is relatively quick depending on the subject and light. Images are consistently sharp from 20mm-190mm, other focal lengths are a little soft on the edges, but still quite sharp. The zoom ring is stiff unless you tilt the lens down when zooming in and up when zooming out, which I do by default to relieve stress on the cams. Some complain about lens creep with this lens, but I have yet to experience this. Overall: great do-it-all lens with an incredible focal range. Highly recommended.

It's a Nikon....Duh

Let's see....first it's a Nikon which still makes great lenses. Second it's the 18-200 which I now believe is the best multi-purpose lens I've ever purchased. I no longer carry any others when I'm traveling as you don't really need them. Great purchase!!

A perfect "walkaround" and travel lens

This a great all-purpose lens for travel and hiking when you don't want to lug around all your lenses. So far I've enjoyed shooting landscapes, birds in flight, children, informal portraits, etc. with sharp, nicely balanced results. It fits easily into my camera bag attached to the camera (Nikon D5000) and I have not experienced any lens creep with this model. I've noticed a bit of softness at 200mm. Also the auto-focus, which focuses quickly in good light, is a bit slow in low light situations, but other than that, I am greatly pleased. There is one caveat: it's best to have this lens with you when buying filters. I had to try 3 different UV filters before finding one (B&W) with a snug fit. The others (Hoyas) were quite loose. That could be a problem with my particular lens and not with others, but I would recommend trying before buying.

[...]nice product

I've used this lens in Europe travel for about 3500 photos with my D90. Great travel lens. Not so sharp throughout the zoom lens as noted in dpreview. Lens creep is the most disturbing.

Real good product

I just started with Photography and when i tried doing some photography of flowers the results were amazing. Even though i thought i could not shoot flowers at a distance of 2-3 feet, I was able to focus on them just at distance of a few inches and the results simply amazing.

Best Lens I Have Bought to Date

I registered a refurbed D40x body I bought through Adorama with Nikon and my name was drawn by Nikon to receive a $ shopping spree. So I bought a Nikon D90 body with my spree money. I bought this 18-200mm lens for my D90 and have been more than pleased. I am learning how to use my D90 and have taken some wonderful photos so far with camera / lens combo. By the way I still use my D40X as well.

The single best super-range zoom lens

By Quaker

The huge 18-200mm range on this lens is equivalent to 28-300mm in a 35mm format. Zoom lenses with such huge ranges have been around for a long time, and are very popular as an all-purpose lens, but they have inherent drawbacks. Specifically, these "super zooms" aren't going to be as sharp or as fast as professional lenses or even as fast as cheaper fixed lenses. By "fast", I mean the maximum aperature is only f/3.5 when shooting at 18mm and only f/5.6 when the lens is zoomed out. Compar...

Best lens for the $$$

By RWT

This is; in my humble opinion, the best lens out there for the serious amateur. Landscapes, portraits, a little macro work (though not on par with the serious macro-maniacs requirements), just a great lens all around. How good is this lens? Getting one in your hands is not easy as the demand is so high. Bottom line: save your pennies and buy this lens.

• Nikon's 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor is a high-ratio 11x zoom lens with Nikon's exclusive VR (Vibration Reduction) technology. Nikon's VR provides the equivalent of a shutter speed 4 steps faster than would otherwise be possible, enabling substantially sharper pictures in challenging conditions. The Nikkor 18-200mm lens incorporates two ED glass and three aspheric lens elements to provide optimal color, contrast and clarity while minimizing chromatic aberrations and other distortion, resulting in outstanding image quality and versatility. In addition, Nikon's compact AF-S Silent Wave Motor provides fast and quiet autofocusing while the M/A mode allows for simultaneous switching between Autofocus and manual focus operation.
