Review Summary

Great lens, esp. for the low cost. My 35mm Nikors, from the film days, all cost much more. My only regret is that it's cost is so low, that there's no value to me to trade it on the Nikon 18-140. I have had no flare issues as one review indicated. It's fast, quiet and works well on my D7000. If I had it to do again, I'd op for the 18-105 as the 55 seems to come up short sometimes.

I love this lens - for the price it does a phenomanal job as an all-around lens. It came as a kit lens with my camera, and when I finally broke the mount by harsh treatment (switching lenses without first turning off the camera), I was determined to replace it. I opted not to get the VR version (this is so light anyway, and I have read there can be a very very slight reduction in quality with the VR). I don't love this as much as some of my other lenses for situation -specific shots, but when I can carry only one, this is my go-to lens and I am happy with the results.

I dropped my nikon camera out of the camera case by accident and couldn't repair it due to no companies locally around. I got on chat with someone on this site and she was very useful telling me the repair costs and that it would be cheaper to replace the lens than get it repaired. very satisfied with the site and will reorder in the future.

Tested this lens inside and out. Found that it lacks the light gathering needed for non flash indoor photos. I was constantly at iso 2000 and up which is too grainy for my taste. Outdoors it showed too many lens flares even with a UV filter. With good lighting, the lens is sharp and has nice bokeh, but in my case good lighting is the exception. I am returning it for a nikkor 35mm f/1.8 instead.

The lens is great for the price but since it isn't made of metal, like the more expensive ones, I don't expect it to last more than 5 years durability wise.

I had this lens approx one Month. It was never abused in any way. I was focusing on an object in my Home and something inside of the Lens fell apart. There is a cheep plastic ring falling around inside the Lens.I have a five Year warranty that came with it but that is of no use to Me as I purchased the lens on line without a receipt.

In today's market, it is not often you [...] can say "it does what it is supposed to do" This does!

When my kit lens (this model) broke I debated whether to buy a more expensive zoom, say the 18-105mm or a faster zoom with the same range. In the end I decided to buy this lens again. It is light, inexpensive, very sharp and has the zoom range I use the most. I just couldn't justify, as a casual photographer, a more expensive lens.

this seems like a nice lens for the money. good quality, easy to use, capable. I have no complaints. Decided not to go with more expensive VR version and am satisfied with decision.

This is my first digital lens for my first digital SLR camera. I thought that the lens wasn't working it was so quiet. I am used to my film SLR's autofocusing with somewhat more noise. I like the lens a lot; it is sharp and very light.

I ordered this lens at a great price but then when I received it I realized it is not a VR (vibration reduction) lens. Why they make a non- VR I don't know. But it's a good clear lens with the nikon build quality. It's light, easy to change and the pictures are sharp.

For the price paid, this lens is a good deal. Sharp focus and light weight. Of course on the down side I use some care using it, not the strongest lens I have. But, knowing that, that's a small price to pay for a decent lens on a back up camera.

use this lens on my second Nikon camera body...it is light weight, zooms silently, minimal distortion at the 18mm setting. There is no focus distance scale for depth of field scale but for the price it is a good lens. Recommend this lens for any level of photography person!

It's a nice little all purpose lens - sharp photos - quick focus - and small enough to take with you everywhere. Plus it is a Nikon - I'm very happy with the lense and the price was great.

Watch out for the lens mount on this lens - it's plastic, and can be broken by heavily pumping the lens against an object! For ordinary use, the lens is good, although slow...

Great lens and for only around $100.00 It's super sharp with little distortion and is very quick at zooming. Be cautious about holding the camera by this lens because of the plastic mount.

Very nice lens... the only problem I saw was the focus... it's a little slow. Other than that the lens if perfect.

Cant say anything wrong with this lens. I got my nikon d60 with a 55-200 vr lens and found myself wanted something for more wide angle. This lens is on 90% of the time.

This is a great, inexpensive lens for people just starting out. It has a good wide angle, but also can zoom in pretty far. I have had no problems with the focusing or sharpness - it seems to work very well. The autofocus is also very fast. One bad thing is that it isn't very durable - I dropped it once and not it will not mount to my camera.

Lens is excellent for price: that said, it's too slow for most indoor candids without flash. (most of my pictures!)

This is a very cheap lens, but for the price I am happy. There is a lot of focus ring creep on the Manual focus setting which makes it hard to keep the focus when focusing manually for close-ups, and the zoom ring sometimes moves by itself. Other than that I don't have any problems with the lens. It is very sharp. It can be used as a Macro lens because it can focus as close as 6 inches (manually) at 55mm. Distortion is low compared to other lenses in the price range. The only cons I have are not related to sharpness and image quality.

I bought this lens as a cheap lens to throw on the camera when i first bought it. For a cheap lens to have in your bag this lens is a good one to have. So far i have done a wedding and a couple family portraits with this lens and they all have came out great.

It's the lens we use 90% of the time with the 70-300 when we need to jump out there. Fast focus. Clear pics.

This is a great little lens. Zooms easily, no stacking at either end. Sharp the full range. I enjoy the close focus capability...about 6 inches...the full range. Designed as a kit lens but a lot of lens for the money.

An ultracompact, lightweight standard zoom lens with a 3x focal range that is ideal for everyday photography, offers a remarkable cost-to-performance ratio and features optics optimized for use with Nikon digital SLRs. It is ideally suited to the new Nikon D50.
The lens offers users the popular 18-55mm focal length range, which conveniently covers everything from tight indoor portraits to standard snap shots. (The picture angle is equivalent to a 27-82.5mm lens in 35mm format.) The newly developed compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) has given rise to an ultracompact lightweight design that offers excellent handling characteristics. Including thenew SWM, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED measures a compact 69 x 74mm (2.7 x 2.9 in.) and weighs approximately 205g (7.2 oz.).
For optics, one ED glass element and one hybrid aspherical lens element guarantee high-resolution, high-contrast images while minimizing chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion. The new SWM built into the lens offers the smooth and quiet autofocus performance that users have come to expect from our existing SWM.
By using this lens and the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED lens, photographers have a focal-length range from wide-angle 18mm to telephoto 200mm (equivalent to a 27-300mm lens in 35mm format) that is well-suited to a wide variety of shooting situations. The useful range and high-quality performance ofthis lens will expand the photographic horizons of Nikon Digital SLR owners. The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED lens will be simultaneously released with the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens
Note: This lens is not compatible with 35mm [135] or IX240 format film cameras.
