Soft on all focal lengths even when stopped down. Superb VR though, too bad it's soft. Had it been sharper, it would be a superb match for the D600.

I think the lens has an unfair reputation for its softness etc. I am a casual photographer and I don't spend (waste) time measuring how much pin cushioning or how soft a lens is or is not. If you want a good lens at a good price, then the 24-120 is worth considering.

I traded in some other lesser used camera equipment, to get this 24-120 used lens to have a full frame lens for my new D700, i also bought from Adorama. The lens has the perfect range, the VR version is much better than the original film camera version of the late 90's and early 2000's I find this lens to satisfy all of my general purpose one camera one lens needs , If i dont want to carry my other camera bodies and longer or shorter lenses I am very pleased with this lens, their is a slight barrel at 24mm and wide open..easily correctable in Photoshops or Gimp, but for landscape it never bothers me , or portraits with backdrop and studio lighting. The only place this minor barrel distorion would be a problem, as I see it would be for architecture...This would not be the lens for controlled perspective in building photography For portraits , just did a fashion shoot, and was very pleased in the 35mm-85mm range ..very sharp consistant output and wonderful lens to work with. At 120mm and doing outdoor landscape photo at F11 I was amazed at the quality of the color, and depth and on close focus ..also at the bokeh when shooting wide open the longest focal length So if you are on a tight budget ..need a general all purpose lense for an FX body ( or DX body would = 36mm-180mm ) this is the lense...I am very happy with it the used camera equip dept at Adorama is fabulous, and dedicated to service and quality

This lens is much better than the "pixel-peepers" would leave you to believe. Very useful for a photojournalistic style of photography.

I use the 24-120mm photographing candid photos for marketing and of the institution I photograph. I find the greatest thing about this lens is it zoom range. I was aware this is a slower lens than the new version of it, but the price was right, and it is lighter, more compact, and just what I was looking for in a used lens.

I just love this lens. Compared to the screw drive focusing of my other lenses, this one is very quite and very fast. The VR works great. It is a little heavy but so is my camera. I use it on a D700 and its just awesome. The zoom range saves me from switching between two lens all the time.

This is a great all-around zoom lens. Covers a wide range without being too heavy or bulky. I would prefer a wider maximum aperture, but for the price, I"m not going to complain.

Certainly, it not the unique solution, after all depending on preferences of the photographer to its services is also another megazoom - Nikkor 18-200VR. So, if your interests are in telefield, you have a select. If your style demands wide spanning of space, 24-120 - for you. On the other hand, if you are engaged in a wide angle seriously think about something more the wide-angle is better, type 17-35 though such objective can be and second. Technically Nikkor 24-120 it is, of course, most perfect in the class.

VR technology helps eliminate image blur caused by camera shake, particularly when shooting in low-light conditions, allowing photographers to use shutter speeds about three times slower than they would ordinarily use to get sharp, well exposed images.
Another feature of the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens is Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor Technology for fast, accurate and nearly silent focusing
In addition to Vibration Reduction, the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens includes a selection of Nikon advanced technologies such as Manual/Automatic mode, two Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and two Aspheric lens elements, Silent Wave Motor Technology (SWM), Internal Focusing construction (IF), Super Integrated Coating (S-IC) and G-Type design.
The G-Type feature is designed for the newest Nikon 35mm and digital SLR models that allow aperture control directly from the camera body. The design facilitates better lens handling and helps photographers keep a more positive grip on the camera. This firmer grip and balance helps photographers get sharper images, even as they adjust exposure and quickly shoot their pictures.
Distance Technology (included in D-type and G-type Nikkor lenses) provides precise distance information from the lens. This information is incorporated into exposure calculations for both ambient light and flash illumination, as well as combinations of both. The distance information enables more precise calculations, leading to improved exposure control.
