Nice Balance between IQ and Versatility

I waited quite a while before pulling the trigger on this lens because of the mixed reviews, many of which emphasize technical measurements that seemed below par for what is marketed as a "professional" lens. As even the critical reviews have noted, however, center resolution is generally excellent at most focal lengths. It falls off at the edges, even stopped down, but I'm quite pleased with the colors and contrast and I find I don't need to sharpen too aggressively in post to get images that look reasonably crisp, even viewed at 1:1, on a very demanding D800E. There's some distortion at every focal length, as well, particularly at the wide end, but the automated lens correction modules in Lightroom or DxO Optics Pro can handle it quite satisfactorily. Some reviewers mention excessive CA (also correctable in post), but I'm not seeing that in my sample. The build quality is very good, and both autofocus speed and accuracy are excellent. This is obviously intended as a lens for hand-held shooting and Nikon's VR stabilizes it quite effectively. Every lens design is a compromise, of course, but I think this one achieves a good balance between image quality and versatility. And the lens certainly is versatile: the zoom range is ideal for circumstances where someone shooting full-frame wants to avoid changing lenses.

Long term quality

from Undisclosed

This lens lives on my D800E. I have 18 FX lenses, and it's my favorite.

My go-to lens

from Methuen, MA, 01844  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Ever since I purchased my FX camera, I have been looking for a lens with this focal length and speed. I'm putting it through its paces and enjoying the experience. I own several specialty lenses, but I' m finding that this lens stays on the camera more than any of the others. I call this lens my go-to lens.

Great glass

from Belcamp  -  Casual Photographer

This is a great all around lens to carry on trips and nature walks with a fast f/4 will let you takes excellent quality photos. I have no regrets. The colour, contrast, focussing speed, and sharpness of the 24-120 f4 are all very impressive.

Vs 24-105L this one crushes!

from Los Angeles

I just switched from Canon 24-105L. You will not be sorry. This lens is just outstanding. I have done many types of settings including flash, indoor, outdoor, portrait, etc. It's just fantastic.

Ultimate Nikon Landscape Zoom Lens

from San Diego, California

After visiting numerous National Parks in the United States, this lens has the best combination of focal lengths and optical quality for my landscape needs. Below is a photo taken with this lens and a Nikon D800 camera body at 6:18 AM in Death Valley National Park in California. The shutter speed is 1/4 of a second (on a tripod), the aperture is f/8, the focal length is 24mm, the ISO is 100, the exposure mode is manual, and the white balance is auto.

My Standard - Hard to Take Off

from Richmond, VA

While this may not be the sharpest lens in Nikon's bag. it has performed wonderfully as the standard lens on my D300 and D800, and it will reclaim that position on my D810 following the theft of my D800. I have numerous prime lenses (50mm 1.8G; 85mm 1.8G; 105mm micro 2.8G among them), but for pure flexibility and the confidence of knowing I'll get the perfect shot regardless of the distance, this is my lens. My last one was stolen along with my D800, and the new one has a firmer "turn feel" (not a technical term), and I'm hoping it remains so to prevent the lens involuntarily lengthening as it hangs on my shoulder.

Sharp lens

from Boston  -  Photo Enthusiast

The focus and handling are fine as usual. Build is contemporarygood, meaning not all metal. But what impresses me most is the sharpness of lens paired with my D600.

I really wanted to like this lens….

from Sierra Vista Az  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I wanted a mid zoom lens that was reasonably light, compact with good color and contrast and most of all SHARP to use on my Nikon D 610 (full frame). I found this lens to be SOFT in most lighting conditions, especially in bright, contrasty light. It is not compact nor is it particularly light weight. I could get over that if it was sharp. I took a lot of photographs in all different lighting conditions and at different settings hoping to salvage this purchase. Not going to happen. Although I often use prime lenses I also own and love the 70-200 f4. FYI- there is no comparison between these two lenses. This lens goes back ASAP.

Works well

from Boston, MA  -  Photo Enthusiast

Great for a walk around lens and range is perfect when just out for the day. Behaved very well with a flash. Heavy and on-line reviews did not any problem but they can be worked around.

Great Walkaround

from Seattle, WA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

First, I would recommend to anyone that they have one or more nice primes for low light and highest quality. But as a complement to that, this is an incredibly nice focal length range on FX or DX. The nicest features of the lens, besides the perfect zoom range, are the constant f4 aperture and the VR. I'm not a fan of the variable aperture lenses at all, and while 2.8 would be great, f/4 is fine for outdoors and again, the range the affords you, with much less weight than the 24-70. The biggest reason I bought this lens is for video, where the VR makes an extraordinary difference for handheld work. You really need a stabilized handheld rig if you don't have a VR lens, and that is still a good way to go even with VR, but I can get some nice smooth footage, in short clips, handheld with this. The negatives, besides lacking low light performance and really extraordinary bokeh, are how much the lens extends on zoom, as I worry it will let in dust, and a minute amount of creep if it hangs down with the hood on.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
DANIEL K  This is a great lens; a vast improvement on the original 24-120 which had a variable aperture and no Nano coatings. The VR feature (image stabilization) is useful and it does credible macro as well. I suspect Nikon produced it to compete with the Canon 24-105/4 L IS USM which I use on my EOS 5D Mark II, and which is also a great lens. Unless you need f/2.8 or faster speed, then the 24-120 ED should be a nice choice.
Patty S  Is this lens for full frame cameras?
CHRISTIAN C  Yes it is full frame. It can be used on any Nikon camera.
Shopper  What is the warranty on the refurbished lens?
Mitch C  1 year....but best to check with Nikon for any new attitudes
