Questions & Answers

Sergio M : Would like to know if this lens is a fit for a Nikon 5200?JOSEPH G : Yes this lens is fit in your 5200. I have D7000 w/ battery grip.RICKEY M : yes
Shopper : Does this lens come with a Nikon hood and lens caps? If not, what are the model numbers I need?KEN D : yes.JOHN P : Yes. Both the hood and the lens caps are included.MARK S : Yes it does come with caps and hood. All Nikon lenses new and refurbished come with caps and hood. BTW, this is an awesome lens, very light and very sharp too!SUBHOJIT C : Yes it does come with the lens cap and hood.JAMES B : I just checked, and yes, it also includes the lens hood/sunshade.JAMES B : Mine came with front and rear caps, but I can't recall if the sun shade was included. You may be able to find out by seeing if there is a "what's included" tab here on their website.HENRY W : Mine came with both caps and the hood. And, I might add, in perfect condition.ROCKY B : Yes they both come with it, no problems there.MICHAEL L : A new or Nikon refurbished lens will always have a lens cap, hood & soft bag.DAVE B : Yes, this refurbished lens includes both the hood and lens cap.PHIL S : When I bought mine, it came with everything just like a brand new lens. I believe they all do.FRANCISCO O : It should come with all of those items plus a "soft lens case" (cloth bag), Mine did. See the "What"s in the box" item on Adorama's webpage. Nice lens.WILLIAM E : It came with all accessories that the new lens would come with.
MARY D : I am interested in purchasing this lens for mostly portraits on my D7000. Should I have any hesitations? I've never purchased refurbished equipment, but this seems like a good lens to give it a try.JAMES B : I forgot to address your refurb question; I would not hesitate to by Nikon refurbed equipment again, and have done so with cameras, lenses and other items. JPBJAMES B : This is an excellent "do-it-all" lens for the FX cameras. For an APS-C camera like yours, I would look at the 18-105 which may have come with your camera as it is made for APS-C format. Even the lower-end 18-55 is a credible and very capable piece of glass. I had an old photo I took with an 18-55 on a D5000 get honorable mention in the Outdoor Photographer's Vistas 2014 contest, so it doesn't take high-end equipment to make good images. If you want to do strictly portraiture, the new 85mm 1.8 prime would be a good lens. Your D7000 is a terrific camera no matter what lens you choose. Hope this helps. JPBDAVE B : You didn't indicate what type of camera body you are using. On a full-frame body, this is an outstanding lens for all-around use. In can be used successfully for portrait work, but there are obviously better fixed-format portrait lenses available (more costly). As far as the refurbished lens is concerned, I have found the Nikon refurbished items to be outstanding. I've never been able to detect any difference compared to an equivalent new product!KEN D : I have had mine for almost 2 years, refurbished Nikon lenses are as good as new, in my opinion. I use it on my D800.RICHARD R : There is no way to tell the difference between a new lens and one refurbished by Nikon. I was "sold" on this model after reading Ken Rockwell's review, and I haven't been disappointed. I take photos in all sorts of conditions for my work, and this has become the default lens for my D800. HOWEVER, FOR YOUR D7000, THIS LENS MAKES NO SENSE. It is a FX lens intended for a FX sensor, not the smaller DX sensor found in your camera. As Rockwell noted in his review, "I wouldn't bother with this on a DX camera. I'd use any DX lens, especially the 16-85mm VR, instead."LIK HANG F : I had this lens and it does take sharp images even for such a low price, especially with VR. For potrait, I did take some with this lens at 85mm f/4.5. It does it okay-ish but if you are really just looking at portraits on an APS-C body, try the 50 f/1.8G first.MARK S : My experience with refurbished has been excellent and everything I've purchased has been LIKE NEW. I use this lens with my D800 and love it. Optically many say it's as sharp as the more expensive 24-120 and I believe it. My current DX camera is a D7100 and it was a refurbished camera purchased during the Christmas holiday.TAD P : First, Yes, you can definitely trust refurbished equipment. Ive never had a lemon yet with refurbs. Second this lens is a great all around lens for a variety of versatile situations and would be OK for studio portraits with additional lighting, however if you are looking for a more versatile portrait lens on a budget you may be better suited with the Nikon 50mm 1.8 AF-S, 50mm 1.4 AF-S, or better yet, the 85 1.8 AF-S with a faster aperture, less distortion, more light gathering capabilities. good luckMICHAEL L : I purchased this refurbished lens for use on my D-600 and have not been sorry. There is no problem with quality, and the lens works well for events.PHIL S : I've never had a problem with my refurb lens. This is the lens that's usually attached to my camera. It works great. I like the zoom range too.HENRY W : I have purchased several refurbished Nikon lenses from Adorama. They function well. All have looked brand new. The 24-85 lens (times 1.5) would be a good choice for portraits but make sure and shoot at least f/6 or 7.1 for the best sharpness. The lens is just a bit soft when wide open.RAVI R : I was little skeptical before buying a refurbished but the purchase turned out be great. I took several pictures - portrait to LS - in a variety of light conditions and this glass work like a charm. This is only lens I use now. Good LuckJoseph T : I have both many refurb items from Adorama and have had no issues. They stand behind there sales qne have great customer service.JAY W : I have purchased 4 refurbed lens' from Adorama over the past few years and have never had a problem with any of them.

Good lens but returned.

Great product, although after further consideration I returned it for the longer focal length and constant aperture of the 85-120.

Useful Lens

At the refurb price for this lens, it is hard to beat. Though there are some flaws when it comes to chromatic abberations and the pronounced distortions, for everyday, all-purpose shooting, this lens performs beautifully. I just took it on a month long excursion and, to my surprise, some of my favorite shots were taken with this lens. It certainly doesn't have the quality feel of the Nikon 24-120 VR, the Tamron f2.8 24-70 VC or the Sigma 24-105 f4 OS, but considering the price , size and weight, as well as the excellent center sharpness, this lens is capable solid results.

Exceptional Walkaround Lens

I purchased the 24-85mm f/2.8-4D because I wanted a lens that provided the focal range of 24mm for landscape and 85mm for portraits. The macro feature interested me that I can photograph a subject up close for tabletop photography. I've been able to grow and improve my photography skills with this lens from photography classes to corporate events and doing product shots. When I first started using the 24-85mm f/2.8-4D, I noticed some vignetting going on at wider shots, but so long as i don't use a filter, it is hardly noticeable. The autofocus isn't as fast or quiet as my more expensive primes, but is still fast enough for me to use at events and the sound of it focusing is similar to ball bearings spinning unlike my other lenses. I originally purchased the 24-85mm f/2.8-4D for my F5 and had amazing results on film. I'm glad it works with my D7100, but on entry-level DSLR, the auto-focus can't be used. Still, this lens offers a lot of value with its capabilities and versatility at a price the fraction of more expensive lenses making it a perfect walk-around lens for the park, street, or wherever your travels take you.

decent enough

A LOT lighter than than 24-120. AF is quick. Vignetting is easily corrected in imaging software. Decent walking around or event lens. Even though it was a reburb, I've never had any problems with a refurb, and outside of coming in a white box, indistiguishable from new

Great Wide Angle Zoom

With my D600 body, I use it as a general wide angle zoom lens, great for city and landscapes, zoom enough to do portrait work. The little distortion on both ends is taken care of by Lightroom. Slapped a BW UV Filter for $32 on it, and I'm done. Excellent value at $349 as a refurb.

Looks like new - one would never know.

I use this lens as a walk around on a D600 Nikon. So far there is nothing negative I can report. Images are crisp, clear with excellent color and contrast. One of the main advantages of this lens is weight. It is light but well constructed. Most of my shooting is done in the f8-f11 range so having a variable f does not affect me. I have other lenses if needed for speed but they are heavy!

Great all around travel lens. Good feel and not too heavy. The refurbished program and buying an extend warranty really make this a good buy.

Great Value for FX mid-range

I purchased this lens as a lighter alternative to my 24-120mm f/4, but in the shared focal lengths, they perform pretty much identically, so I've sold the 24-120! So compared to the 24-120, it's lighter, it doesn't have any lens creep, and it's less than half the price! I prefer primes for most of my shooting, but this is a great zoom to keep in the bag for birthday parties and other events where convenience is more important than image quality.

As good as brand new at a great price

Just what I wanted in a walk around lens for my Nikon D800. I am looking forward to our next vacation because I will only be taking this lens, my Tamron 70-200 2.8 and a Nikon 50mm 1.4 prime.

I needed a full-frame lens for my D800 so I let go of my Nikkor 18-200. I still have the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 and the Nikkor 70-300mm...

Sharp, nice zoom range, a little slow

This is the lens that is usually on my Nikon D800. You need to use prime lenses to get the most out of this camera, but this is a pretty zoom for "ordinary" use. Photos of groups, portraits, casuals, etc. are what I use it for mostly. This refurbished lens is actually the second one I've owned. The first one was part of the D600 kit I had but returned because of the sensor issues. I liked it, so I bought another one to use with the D800.

as good as advertised

I am a rock climber and mountaineer and for years have been carrying a 24mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8 and 105mm 2.8 macro on my trips. These are great lenses but difficult to manage on the side of a cliff or in howling snow. My wife and I travel internationally and again, I would bring those three lenses. They are bulky and ill-suited for walking pick-pocket laden streets. I wanted a lens to carry on the mountain and around European towns. I don't really need the speed of a 2.8 or faster for these circumstances. I still plan to bring the other lenses on trips but will leave them at camp on summit day and the hotel unless I know I'll need fast glass for gothic cathedrals.

2nd Time was a Charm

I was looking for a travel lens that was not as big and heavy as my 28-300 mm. This lens fits the bill quite nicely. It takes up much less room in my backpack and adds significantly less weight to the body. Only problem I had was the VR quit working pretty quickly for first one I got. I called Adorama and they emailed me a UPS label to send it back at no cost to me. So far, the second try seems to work just fine. The price was certainly right.

Its an okay lens

I recently went on an east cost trip and brought this as my walk-around lens. Most of my pictures are sharp but a lot of them were out of focus. Not bad but a slight blur to them. Used it on DX camera and wished I had brought along my 17-55mm when it came to wide angle shots.

Great Lens, Huge Savings

I like this focal length on my D700 for a walk around travel lens. I wasn't sure about a refurbished product, but the lens I received looked brand new and functions flawlessly. For a significant cost savings, don't be afraid of a refurbished lens, I won't be in the future.

Nice Walkaround Lens

I got this lens to replace a Nikkor 24-120 f/4 G that had became unusable. I considered buying another 24-120, but a friend suggested I look at the 24-85 instead. There is a huge price difference, but there did not seem to be a huge difference in construction or photo quality. After researching it, I decided to give it a try. Using a D800 and a tripod, the 24-85 works well shooting in low light, but the focus can be a bit soft. That was the only real difference I could see. The construction is good and the photo quality is at least as good as the 24-120...its focus is be a bit soft too in my opinion. If you are looking for a good inexpensive lens to carry with you while traveling or for landscapes this is a good choice.

Good lens

Prior to buying this lens I didn't think I would have kept it on the camera as much as I did, but for a recent hiking trip I found it a little more versatile than the 50mm and not as heavy to lug around the trails as the big zooms. Was a little leery about it being a refurb, but it works great.

Refurbished Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED

I purchased this lens to accompany my D600. Tired of using DX lenses I have for my DX cameras, I can now access the full frame features I paid so dearly for. Although not new, the lens appears to be fully functional and for about 200 less than a comparable new lens, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Good every day glass

I bought this lens to go with a refurb D600. It is an excellent every day lens that is quiet and produces sharp images. Surprisingly heavier than I expected. This goes along with my 70-300 and 50mm 1.8 lens.

Absolutely Surprised

Great deal, i've shifted from canon cropped sensor to a Nikon D600, so i decided to get some lenses with a limited budget, i admit it was risky decision but i don't regret it at all, its a refurbished lens but like a brand new. Its an amazing lens relative to its price and worth it. I did some testing to make sure that it works fine and yes it did pass the test greatly.

Great Versatile Lens

By Ihatenicknames

This lens does a little bit of almost everything and it's super sharp. It is the go-to walking around lens on my D7000.

Glad I have it!

By ReganinDR

This lens is outstanding for value and practicality. Like anything, at either extreme, (24 or 85mm), this lens isn't as fantastic as it is in all the middle lengths. I use it constantly on my D300S and a D50. Along with my 70-200 f/2.8, I don't need to pack my other lenses.

NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR-REFURB

What does it take to create a stunning array of images, from wide-angle shots to zoom shots—all with one lens? Well, it takes a quality lens. Let us introduce you to the NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR-REFURB, a lens so capable that we can hardly sum up its advantages here. Though we will try:

Product Highlights

  • SWM autofocus (silent wave motor) ensures that the Nikon 24-85 lens will vibrate ultrasonically. No gear system to make a bunch of noise—just smooth, precise autofocusing.
  • Auto tripod detection is a fancy feature that provides more image stabilization, adjusting the correction for the shutter vibration to compensate. This helps provide you with stunning still shots.
  • HD video is sharp and high-contrast, much like the beautiful images you’ll see when taking still shots and landscapes.

New, used, refurbished—as long as you have a Nikon 24-85 lens, you’ll find that you’re way ahead of the game.

Learn about the NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR-REFURB

Most lenses aren’t built to be this versatile. They’re built to be specialists, to do one thing spectacularly well—and do nothing else particularly well. Well, the NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR-REFURB isn’t most lenses. This Nikon 24-85 is surprisingly versatile, offering the ability to standard zoom with the FX-format as well as cover a variety of wide angles. That gives enthusiasts and professionals alike a reason to invest in it: it’s professional enough to offer visually stunning images while also covering enough versatile range that it can appease the photography enthusiasts. In short, we at Adorama have one word to describe this lens: excellent.

But sometimes one word doesn’t suffice. So let’s zoom out, if you will, and take a look at exactly what goes into making this Nikon 24-85 such a versatile instrument:

  • Image stabilization. With great zoom comes a great need to stabilize the image—otherwise you’re left with nothing but blurry photographs and uncertain framing. Luckily, the Nikon 24-85 mm delivers on this count, thanks to VR II image stabilization. This means that no matter what angle you’re using—whether it’s a wide angel or a medium telephoto zoom range—this lens will be able to pick up what you need with minimal distortion. That makes covering live events like weddings a foregone conclusion: even if you’re a professional, you’ll sometimes only have to exert the effort of an amateur.
  • HD video. A quality lens also needs to output quality video—otherwise, its job is only half complete. Luckily, the Nikon 24-85 offers a stunning array of HD video features without compromising any of its image quality. You’ll have minimal blurring thanks to a number of features—add it to a tripod and you’ll be stunned at the cinematic quality of the video outputs. Turn down the shutter speeds on still images and you’ll still find stable images—that’s just how stable this lens is, for video and stills alike.
  • An extra-low dispersion element helps ensure that your images come out crisp and clean. How? The sharpness and color correction will minimize any potential chromatic aberration, even when you’re using the widest possible aperture settings to capture all the light you can. This will help you to take accurate shots even in low lighting—outside and at night. Need to take quality photos at that outdoor wedding reception? Or at that concert? The Nikon 24-85 will accommodate.
  • Internal focusing. You don’t hear this phrase thrown around a lot here at Adorama, but it means a lot when you’re talking about a lens of this quality: in this case, the internal optical movement is limited to the interior lens barrel, which gives a lightweight construction to the entire piece. There’s no reason to carry a bulky lens even when it’s a lens capable of such substantial imagery.
  • The SWM, or Nikon Silent Wave Motor, will use ultrasonic vibrations rather than a gear system, providing the silent and precise autofocus you need to do your job efficiently.

Bottom line: refurbished or brand new, you’d be hard-pressed to find a lens capable of providing as many wide-ranging and sharp images as the NIKON 24-85mm F/3.5-4.5G ED VR-REFURB.

From the Manufacturer
AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR

Advanced and versatile FX-format standard zoom with VR II image stabilization.
Covering a highly versatile wide-angle to medium telephoto zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 24 85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR delivers stunning high-contrast images and HD videos. Nikon's Vibration Reduction image stabilization (VR II) maintains sharpness even during hand held shooting at slower shutter speeds and VR Auto Tripod Detection recognizes when the camera is mounted on a tripod and provides precise shutter vibration correction.
