Questions & Answers

IRA S : Is this lens good for sports photos?WILLIAM P : I have found this lens is a bit slow for sports . The grey market has nothing to do with sports, it has to do with the fact there is no U.S. Nikon warranty. I use this lens for landscapes and wildlife and other lenses for sports.PAULA G : This lens is perfect for photographing birds in flight and large mammals in action and is my go to lens for close in surfing photos also. So with that said, I believe it would translate to most any outdoor sports event where you need a fast lens and the ease of a light weight lens. Personally it is my favorite lens. Grey market is fine as Adorama stands behind their products. The only con is the tripod collar is poorly made and I solved the problem with a Really Right Stuff tripod collar.SAPAN M : My answer for this is "No", we need at least f/2.8 fixed aperture, telephoto lens for sports photography. Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII is the best I have.MARLENE K : I bought this lens for wildlife. I used it for a year and took about 3,000 shots with it. Difficult to focus birds on flight. If your question is about the quality of the lens, no doubt it is a premium lens. If your question is about the speed of the autofocus, it probably won't be the best choice.JOHN C : It is a very nice lens but I would think that it may depend on which sports and what location you would be shooting from as well as what results you are looking for. I would think that if a 300mm lens is the right amount of telephoto for what you want to do, this lens should work very well.GREGORY D : This is an excellent sports lens. It's very fast-focusing and optically sharp. The 300mm reach is a real advantage over the 200mm zoom (which I also own). It is an f4 lens so it's really best for outdoor sports. F2.8 is needed for indorr action shots.DORN B : The f/2.8 version would probably be better. The f/4 is ok, but in low light it is slower focusing. I use it on continuous mode on my Nikon D2Xs when shooting birds, and it can be problematic in the early hours or at dusk, but with enough light, I've gotten some fantastic bald eagle shots. I bought this lens over the f2.8 because it's lighter and I own a 400mm lens as well, which covers it when using a tripod. Overall, as a non-professional photographer, but still pretty picky, I've been very happy with the lens.VICKI B : this is Vicki B, sorry I mis-typed my earlier answer. This lens does have auto focus which does work with the 1.4x teleconverter, it does not have vibration reduction (VR) which is not a problem if you shoot at higher shutter speeds.VICKI B : I don't shoot sports but hopefully this will help you get a sense of how the lens performs. I use this lens for photographing birds and love it for that purpose. Pros: it is hand-holdable; very sharp photos; reasonably fast focusing; and works well with a 1.4X Nikon teleconverter with little degradation. Cons: it does not have autofocus so I shoot at fairly high speeds which I need anyway to capture birds in flight; with the teleconverter fastest f-stop is 5.6 so need a little more light than if you shot f4.BRIAN L : This is a really sharp lens, even wide open. If I wanted a lens specially for sports I would probably want something a little longer. The Nikon 1.4 teleconverter works excellent with this lens bringing your to 420 mm, but that brings the maximum aperture down to 5.6. I would want something faster if I was a dedicated professional, and get something like a Nikon 400mm f2.8, which costs over $9000.00 and weights about 10 lbs. So if the 300 is within your budget and your a casual sports photographer I would get it.VENKATA R : yes, it is very good for sports in good to moderate light conditions. Tripod is no required in good light.JOHN N : Yes, I have found that it works well for sports photography. It's compact enough to use without a monopod or tripod, assuming a fast shutter speed and a steady hand, although the support definitely helps. The lack of VR isn't really an issue when shooting at fast shutter speeds (1/1000 or faster, when you would want VR turned off anyway to avoid artifacts).RODOLFO Q : Depends on the lighting. Outdoors in good daytime light, yes. Outdoors & indoors under low light would be iffy. You may need a faster lens. Another factor is the camera's high ISO capability. I'm able to use it with my D700 & D800 sometimes full aperture @ f4. Re: focusing ability Yes, this lens focuses very fast that can be suitable for sports. Another option is the AF-S 70-200mm f2.8G VR or the AF 80-200mm f2.8D.DARIN B : I have used this lens for sports and it works well -- especially for baseball, but also football and soccer. Because it is f/4 I only use it for outdoor sports.SAPAN M : My answer is "NO".. We need much faster lens for better sports photography i.e. Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRll..if required add Nikon TC 14 to make it 98-280mm f/4.0 ....MICHAEL R : Absolutely . It would be best for shooting daylight games, but could also be used for night games if you boost the ISO setting. Very sharp.RON S : While not the fastest lens available it does a very good job for sports if you are not dealing with a very low light situation. It is great for any outdoor sports and indoor sports that are will lit. Spotlit sports such as figure skating are OK. If you are dealing with night sports such as night time football or a badly lit high school basketball game this is not the lens for you. Then you need to invest a lot more money in a 2.8 or faster lens to do the job.
Shopper : This lens coupled with a 1.4 nikon tele-converter is auto focus possible?RODRIGO N : Great lens with my nikon D200.JEFFREY C : It sure will! I plan to add 1.4 to my bag!!DORN B : Auto-focus will work if you use the TC-14E II tele-converter. I don't recommend a tele-converter with this lens. It will be slow focusing and not have good sharpness. I like this lens alot - good color and OK focusing speed and is still hand holdable. I use a nikkor 400mm with a tele-converter when I want more reach (not hand holdable). I'm using the 300mm lens on a Nikon D2xs and Nikon D70. The 300mm is probably my most used lens.MARLENE K : Yes, works great with 1.4 Good lens, not as fast focus as the f2.8 but very good lens for the price.JOHN C : I have not used this lens often but the main reason that I bought it was for travel and use with a Nikon 1.4 tele-converter and it can be used in that combination it the light is fairly bright.Justin M : Yes, this should work if you have a modern teleconverter with electronic contacts since this is an AF-S lens. I regularly use this lens with a Kenko 2x teleconverter and AF speed is pretty good.EUGENE C : Yes it will AF and do it well. Nikon AF works until F8 is reached.ROBERT C : Yes, the working maximum aperture will be f5.6 which allows autofocus to work properly though it may be slower. I use a 2X converter with an f2.8 lens all the time to get 600mm reach.
Shopper : What is gray market?DORN B : According to Wikipedia grey market items are described below. The biggest concern is the fact that grey market lenses are not covered by any US warranty. From Wikipedia: Grey-market goods refer to "legal goods" which are sold outside normal distribution channels by companies which may have no relationship with the producer of the goods. Frequently this form of parallel import occurs when the price of an item is significantly higher in one country than another. This situation commonly occurs with electronic equipment such as cameras. Entrepreneurs buy the product where it is available cheaply, often at retail but sometimes at wholesale, and import it legally to the target market. They then sell it at a price high enough to provide a profit but under the normal market price. International efforts to promote free trade, including reduced tariffs and harmonized national standards, facilitate this form of arbitrage whenever manufacturers attempt to preserve highly disparate pricing. Because of the nature of grey markets, it is difficult or impossible to track the precise numbers of grey-market sales. Grey-market goods are often new, but some grey market goods are used goods. A market in used goods is sometimes nicknamed a green market.Justin M : Gray market essentially means that you are buying direct from an importer, versus buying from a Nikon-imported reseller. The cost is lower, but you do not get Nikon's five-year warranty, only the reseller's. In this case, Adorama gives a one-year warranty. Otherwise the lens is brand new. I went this way and love this lens!LARRY K : Every thing is made the same as a Nikon USA, but they are made to be distributed in countries other than the US. They look and work the same but are not covered under the Nikon warranty. The warranty you’ll get will be from an independent repair shop. Nikon will repair it if needed but you’ll have to pay the bill. LarryVICKI B : Gray market products are described on the Adorama website under "Warranties", scroll down to "Products and Prices" and there is a very good explanation.MARLENE K : Adorama Grey Market definition: "Grey Market," also known as "direct import," are products legally imported directly into the U.S., and not through the manufacturer's authorized agent/distributor. There is no difference in the actual products. However Grey Market products purchased from Adorama, are warrantied by Adorama for the same period as the U.S. warrantied products carry, for a period of one year. Grey Market products do not qualify for manufacturer's rebate programs.MARLENE K : Adorama explain well what is a grey market: imported device without USA warranty.MICHAEL D : Grey market means it does not have a U.S. warranty. Usually the vendor offers some type of warranty for an additional cost.GUOXING Y : Gray market has the same product but not warrantied by the manufacturer. The seller however, usually provide similar warranty. I have no issue using the len for almost half a year.BRIAN L : It's not intended for US market sales; so oftentimes gray market items don't receive US factory/warranty support. I recently purchased one of these from Adorama and have been very pleased with it.

Love it

Amazing lens. A bit on the heavy side but the person who decided on buying it would know that already.

Expensive to replace rubber cascade for hood lens

I like the Lens and has sharp images but my lens hood need new rubber cascade and Nikon repair center asking $180.00 to replace it, only for the rubber not new hood. This is Nikon problem for this lens and they should taker of it for free, rubber costs less then $1.00 and the rest is labor. It is hard to pay $180.00 for repair and doesn’t have any effect on the image only hood doesn’t stay down and is loss. Most of this lens have same problem, at least I see 3 of them.

Nikon 300mm f4

This lens is every bit as sharp as advertised and reviewers have stated. And no complaints about the oft mentioned "shortcomings" of the tripod mount. Solid as a rock, no creep whatsoever. It autofocuses like lightening. I have my Df body programed on AF-C and to focus in the "back button" mode. It tracks birds in flight extremely well. And that last is also true when using a Nikon TC 14E to boot. Very pleased.

Nice lens with appropriate light

I researched hours for a new lens to take on safari. I have the 70-300 VR, but needed something more sharp between 200 and 300. I bought the 300mm f/4 without VR. I did not want to spend the extra ($) on the new 300 f/4 with VR. Though I got some great photos, at lower light, using a monopod, my results were very mixed. Plus, the wildlife in South Luangwa National Park were very tolerant of vehicles and 300mm was almost too much. I wish I went with a 70-200 f/2.8 lens. The 300mm f/4 was also not great for birding. Unless the bird was completely still, many photos did not come out as sharp as I hoped. Still a very good lens and probably better in the hands of a more seasoned photographer. I used this lens with the D7000.

NIKON-when your salary and reputation is at stake!

Every time I shoot, my paycheck depends on the quality of my images. (I shoot for some very picky editors.) All of the sample shots below were shot handheld using the 300-f4 IF ED, TC-14 extender, with aperture virtually wide open for minimum depth of field.

Great Deals

I have, in the past, bought used equipment from Adorama and found their ratings of their used equipment is just as described or better. I feel very confident in purchasing used equipment from Adorama. This lens came packaged very well for the sometime, lately, rough handling of the delivery services. WELL DONE Adorama.

Excellent Portable Telephoto Lens

This Nikon 300mm f/4 lens is well suited for travel when you need a moderate "reach" with an Nikon FX camera body, or a "longer reach" with a Nikon DX camera body, while trying to keep the size and weight of your equipment at a minimum. The maximum f/4 aperture is more than adequate for outdoor lighting given the acceptable ISOs available in todays camera bodies. The attached photo was taken hand held at 1/125 of a second, an aperture of f/4, and an ISO value of 1000.

Sharp!

This lens is sharp. Even with a 1.4 teleconverter attached, it is reasonably sharp. F/4 gives a stop or stop and a half over most of the zoom lenses out there, as well. For dedicated telephoto work, like wildlife photography, this lens is the best in the under $1500 category by a mile.

My GoTo Long lens for DX, FX, CX formats

I have owned this lens for almost 5 years and have taken thousands of pictures with it. I also have several long AIS Primes, AF70-300mm f/4-5.6 and the AFS 70-200 F/2.8 VR. I use all my these long lenses with a TC17EII or TC-201 for the AIS lenses. Without question the 300mm f/4 is the sharpest in my stable of long lenses. It is awesome on the D300, D600, D700 and the 1V1 where it gives an incredible 1377mm reach with the TC-17. Focus is a bit touchy, but hey it doesn't cost over $10,000us. All this said, I prefer the 70-200 for sports and portraits.

Great lens

I needed a high quality longer lens for wildlife shots. By itself, this lens is super sharp, has quick autofocus, and is relatively inexpensive compared to other lenses I was considering. Pairing this lens with a 1.7 teleconverter gets me out to 500mm when I need it, and it is still pretty darn sharp. It doesn't have the vibration reduction technology, but I typically use high enough shutter speeds that the lack of VR doesn't really matter. This lens is great, and paired with a teleconverter, is a great way to get a long lens in the 500mm range without breaking the bank. And the combo is (relatively) light for 500mm reach, letting me hand hold it most of the time.

Amazingly sharp 300mm for bargain price

I primarily shoot wildlife, birds to be specific. I stepped up from a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 with a 1.4tc that gave me very good results. The Nikon blows it away in sharpness and detail on my D7100. Focus is very fast in good light, still produces excellent results even in overcast conditions. This is a stellar lens for wildlife and sports. It's not the lightest lens by far and dwarfs the 70-300 VR in size but worth the extra $$. I shoot handheld 90% of the time and don't miss VR at all since I'm usually shooting at 1/2000 or above to freeze action and get tack sharp images. I also have the Nikon TC14E-II attached to it to extend the focal lenght to 420mm. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking to shoot wildlife or sports you won't regret it.

Great Lens

I own the 18-300 Nikon lens, which is a great all-purpose carry-around lens, but wanted something sharper at the longer focal length. I recently bought this lens, and I am amazed at its sharpness. I prefer to shoot wildlife and birds, and this lens takes awesome sharp images. The autofocus is quick and accurate, and the bokeh is very nice. I attach it to a monopod that I use to handle the lens/camera combination. It gives me stability in lower light situations and supports the lens. I highly recommend this lens. My next purchase will be a Nikon 1.4 teleconverter to extend the lens even further, and I plan to use this lens as the go-to lens for wildlife photos

Clear Photos

I am using this lens mainly with a Sigma 1.4X TC for wildlife photography. It gives nice, clear images. When not used with the Sigma TC, it is a fast focusing lens!!! The lack of Vibration Reduction technology does not seems to bother me at all!!! I think this is a good pick for the price.

Tack Sharp

Great lens!! I not a fan of zoom lens and have mostly prime lens in my bag and wanted to add a longer fixed focal lens. So, I picked up this lends and after well over a hundred images, I have to say it performs as what would be expected of a great Nikon lens.

Incredibly Sharp Lens!

I am currently using this lens with a Nikon D800. I read a lot of online reviews before making the purchase. And I'm glad I didn't wait any longer to purchase this lens. I have captured some incredible wildlife shots of deer with this lens! I always keep a Nikon TC 1.4x attached. The rear lens element is "exposed," even when mounted to the camera. And it seems likely dirt/dust could enter into the rear element. In addition, I don't feel that sharpness, autofocus or Depth of Field suffers with the Teleconverter attached. And 120mm extra reach certainly helps on an FX body (focal length = 420mm). I am personally blown away by the depth of field on this lens. I shot 3 deer standing in a row from about 50-60ft away, and one head was in clear focus, while the other two were gradually blurred [settings = 420mm , f/5.6]. I was shocked to realize I needed to step down in order to bring all deer into focus. This can really enhance wildlife/nature shots with regards to how you want to portray the background behind the animals! This lens is not "lightweight" as the product description states. It is definitely lighter than the 300mm f/2.8 (which I personally have not used). But it will take some practice to hand hold and capture steady shots. I have not shot below 1/400sec yet to put my technique to the test. But why would you when shooting wildlife?! I bought the Kirk collar to replace the Nikon collar (again, a recommendation from online research). In addition, this lens can comfortably be used in extreme temperatures. My first "shoot" was a hike looking for deer in -12C (around 10F) temperatures. And there were no issues with lens fogging (I keep a 77mm B+W clear MRC filter attached at all times). I have not tried the lens in rain. I have shot several times since in below freezing temperatures without any issues. Again, great for nature photography! In conclusion, I am personally blown away by the sharpness of this lens. It can be hand held for an "extended" shoot, but will require some patience and practice in hand holding technique. The autofocus is very quick in my opinion. And I've shot on gloomy winter days in the woods while the sun is setting. I experience minimal hunting with wide open aperature (f/5.6 - because of TeleConverter), but this could be attributed to animals walking behind trees/shrubs). A little extra ISO in gloomy conditions delivers stunning colours! If you are looking for a telephoto lens: Don't look much further unless you have a spare $6,000 for the f/2.8. I have not shot with the 300mm f/2.8 so I can not give a valid comparison, but this lens blows me away! I don't think someone could persuade me a lens of the same focal length could be worth 4x as much!

So far so good

I've had this lens for less than a month so it's hard to identify the pros and cons especially since it's winter here and we haven't had very good light. However, I've used it a few times and am happy with the results. I've set the ISO on my d90 to 1600 and set the aperture to f/8 which was the sweet spot in the earlier version of this lens which I also own. The images were a little soft but I blame that on the conditions rather than the lens and if I had opened it up to f/4 or 5.6 they would have been crisper. Like a lot of people, I'd hoped for a VR version of this lens but got tired of waiting and the Adorama price was too good to pass up. I don't use a tripod but have read the complaints about the mount. To me it appears steady even if it's a little clunky. It would have been nice if nikon had added another inch to the length of the mount. As it is, I can only fit my first 3 fingers using the mount as a handle. Carrying it with all 4 fingers would feel more secure to me and I have small hands.

Very satisfied

I purchased this lens to have a portable birding lens when hiking or on bird tours with other people where room in a vehicle is a consideration. I use it with the 1.4 Nikon TC attached and get over 400mm or reach, more cosidering the DX crop factor. I use it with a monopod to add steadiness in low light. The main drawback of the lens is that is does not have VR. I wish Nikon would add this feature, but am still very satisfied with the lens.

great lens

By Art R.

this lens is quite, fast, and sharp as can be , though not quite long enough for further off subjects it's very close focus for a 300mm can turn out some very nice photo's of the birds I am lucky enough to get close to , and the quiet AFS focus does not frighten them off. I am very fond of the lenses sharpness and the nice blurring of out of focus elements.

Nikon 300mm F/4 Features

  • Super fast, super quiet lens using Nikon's Silent Wave motor technology
  • Compact super-telephoto lens for travel, sports, wildlife and stock photography
  • M/A switch for fast transitions from AF to manual focus
  • No power drain when manually focusing
