Very Sharp, VR works, good value

I purchased this lens instead of the Nikon 70 - 300mm VR because the price on the 55 -200mm unit is almost 1/3 less than the 70 -300mm lens. Due to the relatively compact size, I can store the camera with the lens on. I believe the 55 - 200mm range on this lens, is more usable than the 70 - 300mm range. Remember this is a DX lens so the actual range is the product of 1.5 times the actual lens specified range. Be aware also, this is not a professional grade unit, however it is sharp and focuse...

Be aware also, this is not a professional grade unit, however it is sharp and focuses fine under day light conditions. There is no reason why you can't get great sharp pictures with this lens. The VR feature is very good and I find it very useful for night photography, specially when focusing beyond 70mm. I am please with the purchase, the lens does not come packaged in a fancy colorful Nikon box, instead it is well packaged in a plain brown box with a Nikon "Refurbished" sticker. It includes also a 90 day warranty card but you can purchase a MACK lens warranty from Adorama. The unit does include a generic lens cap and a storage Nikon bag along instructions and 90 day warranty paperwork. It is my opinion that if the refurbished item works fine for 90 days then there is no reason to fail after that period of time unless it is dropped or abused. So paying 2/3 of the price vs the new unit is worth it, specially if you want to use this lens occasionally for non professional use.

I would never recommend this lens

Not worth it, save your money and buy the 70-200mm f/2.8

Its pretty good but watch out at full zoom

I purchase this lens when I purchased my camera about 10 months ago. The lens works fine unless you are at full zoom then things get a little sloppy. I would recommend a tripod with the VR function turned off if you are going to shoot at full zoom. Otherwise this lens works great.

A Wonderful Complementary Lens

When I purchased my new D3300 camera with 18-55mm VR II kit lens, the photo opportunities were immediately rewarding. However, in some situations I desired more than the available 55mm maximum focal length of the kit lens. The Nikon 55-200 VR lens has become a perfect complement. It matches my "normal" zoom lens in both image quality and ease of use, yet gives up to 3.5 times more reach. It is compact enough to fit in the same carrying case with the D3300 body and the original zoom lens, without the bulk and weight of older lenses owned in the past. I highly recommend it!

Decent Lens

Lightweight, sharp and a good value. Not f/2.8, but in good light it matches up well with the big guns.

Lens fell apart

I had high hopes for the lens, I bought it as a lens for my nikon d200. I have another camera so I wasn't too interested in a high end lens, I just needed a lens. I took a few shots and they were pretty decent. I had the lens less than a month, I set the camera down on a desk to load into my bag and when I picked it up, the lens was hanging off the camera, yet still attached. It broke at the focusing ring, exposing the electronic. My lens was a refurbish by Nikon and the entire lens is plastic. I have been in photography now for well over 25 years, and this is the first time that has ever happened. I have even dropped a few lenses in my time, too, but this just fell apart. Thankfully Adorama took it all back and gave me a refund, although I also was still under Nikon warranty too. I will pay the extra money for a non plastic lens next time.

Excellent purchase

Just getting into digital photography after a 20 year hiatus from film. I love this lens. It lets me shoot my grandson from a distance so he is unaware of grandpa's photo taking. Sharp pictures, lightweight, great for the person just starting up and learning or relearning photography.

Fabulous deal

Love the lens! Love the price! Fast, incredible service....

Excellent carry around lens

This is a great lens as far as kit lenses go. I really struggled with either buying this or going for a used in great condition on a Nikon 80-200 2.8 lens. I wanted to try out Nikon VR lenses and as far as that goes it's O.K. I probably just need to cut back on the coffee and pay attention better when I use it. When price is your primary concern, this lens it a good way to go. Good, not great.

Great value

I purchased this lens to be a companion to my 18-55 and I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the glass and the function of the lens. I highly recommend this lens to the beginner or seasoned veteran!

Looks like New - Nikon 55-200mm VR lens

This lens arrived quickly and in perfect order. It's light and pocketable. I'll be using it as a partial replacement for my 18-200 mm lens when I want to travel light and mostly use a prime lens on my camera while still having the option of capturing distant objects. The lens seems at least as sharp as my 18-200 mm lens where the coverages overlap but I suspect that the VR on this lens is not quite as advanced at the one on the 18-200 mm lens. There doesn't seem to be a reason to purchase this lens new since these refurbished ones seem as good.

Questions about this item:

Cris C  Does this lens fit an N5100?
DAVID R  I use one on my D5000 and it's a great value lens. As you push the MPs of your sensor up, it might start to show it's limitations around 24MP, but I imaging up to 16MP, you'll find this is a great deal
Cris C  This was my mistake--it's a D5100 not N5100. Lens fits fine. Thanks for your response.
Sonja D  Was lense in good condition without scratches?
ANGELO L  Yes. Good condition, no scratches. I've purchased alot of refurbished equipment and never had any issues.
Sonja D  Thanks!!
Scarlet B  Alright. I have a couple more questions. Would this be a good lens for events (like a wedding ceremony where I would have to stand further away to take the pictures) and is it good for macro style photography? I have also been looking into the Sigma 70-300mm lens and it has an option to change the lens for macro (there's a switch). I plan on building my lens collection along the way, but for now I am going to start out with this (or the 70-300mm) and a 50mm 1.8D? Would you call this a good starter set?
David H  Scarlett, I am just an amatuer photographer. But I do like the 55-200--mm. lense. it focuses fairly close. It does nice closeups but it doesn't do macro quality pics. I have been wondering if I bought a closeup lens to put on the end of the 55-200 if I could do macro with it. They usaully come in sets of differnt strengths. Why buy the Sigma lens when you already have that length almost covered. Save your money and use it to buy the 18-55 vr lens or the more expenisve 16-85 vr which I just bought. The 18-55 is not very expensive and has very good optics. With that lens, the 55-200 and a 50mm 1.8 you would have enough lenses to take most any shot.
Scarlet B  Ok. Thank you!! I am trying to figure everything out. I will definitely save up and add one of the two lenses that you suggested into my collection.
