Great Design with quiet fast focus Can't beat it!
I was looking at the 70-300 when this came along. When I got it i went right out and shot 170 raw photos in dim evening light and there were no issues with this camera's performance. It zooms as fast as you need and the manual override feature is great. It has good balance if not a little heavy but that is what you have to expect with a lens like this. I Highly recommend to all Digital users.

I have been shooting a lot with this lens, often replacing the sigma 18-250 that I began to use as an all purpose lens. Using my d5200 or d7100, I simply get much sharper photos with excellent characteristics. Quite by surprise, I processed several shots I took of the moon (using a tripod). See for yourself. this lens is awesome on my DX cameras. this is NOT a fast lens, but I still managed to catch a few turkey vultures in flight
Using this lens with Nikon D3300, it is astonishing how it can focus "on the go" taking point'n'shoot pictures of dragonflies rushing over a lake or birds flying through the air: without tripod, in focus, crisp clear. We did not think that would work without a tripod, but in daylight, it works just fine. Very satisfied as an amateur. Now, we do realize that 58mm lens opening is not a very big opening for a 300mm zoom, however, the 55-300mm spread is more than we hoped for in this price category.
just got it learning how to shoot i am new . it takes great shoots
Have really gotten into photography recently, this lens is definitely good pickup. It is very versatile and can be used for a huge variety of shots. I use it for sports and wildlife photos as well as landscapes and sunsets.
Ordered this lens for my D5200, and immediately was disappointed with the focusing and the sharpness of the pictures at higher zooms. I had read that the 70-300vr was a higher quality lens and I thought "I'm not a professional so I can settle for the 55-300vr." Had the lens for a day and returned it because I felt that I allowed my self to settle for something that did not serve me in order to save 70 bucks. I ordered the 70-300vr instead for many reasons including Internal focus, VR2, and the shear speed of the auto focus. Also for the manual focus over ride when in auto focus. Next time I'll do my research more thoroughly.
I've used this lens for a variety of situations and it works beautifully for the most part! It works the best in well lit areas when your subject isn't doing a whole lot of moving. The poorer the light and the more movement happening, the longer it takes to focus, even compared to other lenses. I've noticed that, even in good lighting, it has a tendency to actually focus slightly behind the subject, despite the indicator lighting up in the right spots. That being said, I use it for a lot of sports and other action photography, and I still manage to get some great close-ups after making my own adjustments.
Love this lens so much... Its great combination with my d3300..
Bought this when I started going to horse shows because I needed something with better zoom.. took it to my second show & was absolutely amazed with the quality of the photos. I'm the type who likes her artsy photos & was quite impressed with how good they looked. If anyone is looking for a zoom lens, I suggest going with this one. Works really well with squirrels & birds in trees too!
I was in need of a lens that would go beyond what my small camera would go. I decided to go for this zoom lens after my 18-55mm lens that came with my D40X completely died. I've had my camera for 6 years and I use it a LOT. Getting this lens reignited my passion for photography. I am not an expert photographer, just like to take good pictures. This lens is awesome. It produces crisp images and complements the camera settings to produce excellent pictures with great colors. I am very happy with this lens. Pros: It is not heavy and it is easy to carry/fit in a bag; great colors; crisp images; zooms to great lengths keeping details. Cons: Closer objects are difficult to photograph, but not impossible (I bought extension tubes to resolve this issue)
I wanted a lens that would get close up from far away. This lens really is better then I expected.
Out of the box with the standard 18-55mm kit lens, the Nikon D5300 is a nice basic DSLR, but you may eventually want to customize it, adding lenses, flashes and accessories that would help you get the kinds of photos you want to shoot to express your creativity.Read More Comments(1)
