I used this lens for the first time (other than taking a few test shots here and there) Friday night. I went to a high-school varsity Football game and sat up high on the bleachers. The game was in the evening, so I didn't know how the shots were to come out. The field WAS well lit, so I thought I'd get some good shots of the action. ...and I did even though I was so far away. I set my ISO to 1400-1600, my shutter speed to somewhere around 1/125 at f/5.6 With a focal length at 300mm, the shots came out great. As the evening wore on, and the night became darker, I increased the exposure compensation. The shots came out with very little grain and excellent exposure. The lens surprised me since the price was far below my 70-200mm 1.8 (which I use only for professional photographs. I would definately recommend this to anyone looking for a good zoom lens.

Originally purchased for wildlife photography (actually found that in zoos and such 300mm is TOO close!) and it works great! I shot some of Yosemite's beautiful landscape using this lens as I zeroed in on specific areas. Recently have been using this lens to shoot candid shots of people from a distance away without being obtrusive. This lens works fabulously for this purpose. As you can see from my examples, this lens has more coverage than I previously thought. A great value for the cost. I am female and found that the lens is not too heavy and I can shoot without the need of a tripod in most situations. If you are considering this lens, you won't be disappointed.

Purchase intended for wildlife photography. Currently using with Nikon D80 and very happy with the test shot results.

Amazingly sharp at all focal lengths. Vibration reduction is very effective- 300mm @ 1/100 sec, is sharp. Superb sharpness at minimum focus- for close-up work. I own the 70-200mm VR, and am considering selling it. I love this lens....lighter, more compact, and substantially less $$$
