AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR
The ultimate medium to super-telephoto zoom lens.
If you're looking for a compact, versatile telephoto zoom lens that handles portraiture as well as it handles long-distance wildlife and action photography, look no further than the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. With the broadest focal length range in our super-telephoto zoom lineup, it reduces the number of lenses you need to carry into the field and expands your handheld shooting capabilities, thanks to Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) technology. Create spectacular photos and HD videos in any light, from any distance.

Sharp, beautiful images in any light
Nikon's VR image stabilization with Tripod Auto Detect
At super-telephoto focal lengths, even the slightest camera movement can cause image blur. Fortunately, the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR features Nikon's second-generation Vibration Reduction technology to ensure every handheld photo and HD video is razor-sharp. It also lets you shoot at shutter speeds 4-times slower than otherwise possible, a major advantage in low-light situations where a slower shutter speed means brighter, richer images. The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR even detects when you're using a tripod and automatically delivers specialized VR correction.

Any subject. Any distance.
Remarkable versatility and performance
Travel light. Shoot with confidence. The AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR covers the broadest focal length range of any NIKKOR super-telephoto zoom lens. At 80mm, its an ideal medium-telephoto portrait lens. Create stunning portraits with a medium telephoto perspective and softly blurred backgrounds. At 400mm, it's a powerful super-telephoto lens suited to wildlife and action photography, with or without a tripod. For dazzling close-ups with macro detail, get as close as 5.7 ft. from your subject and zoom in to 400mm you'll be amazed by the results!

Nikon innovations for consistently stunning images

Unbelievable!

Being a prior 11 year owner of the 80-400D, and having bought this lens Mar 14, I have shot over 1K exposures with stunning results. Sharp, sharp, sharp even at 400mm! A major improvement over the D. AF-S, even in continuous focus @5fps on my D600 and D7000, is superb. Contrast, brightness and color @400mm equals my 300mm prime! CA is gone and mechanicals are excellent. Poor Nikon quality control

I purchased this lens and could not remove the rear lens cap. Even after using many utilities that open stuck jars to a huge plummer wrenched that removes the toughest bolts. Nikon customer care is indifferent to customer problems and thankfully i could return the lens. The main concern I have is where has the Nikon quality control?

Great choice

By

from Winter Az. Summer Pa.  -  Photo Enthusiast

I do a lot of wildlife work and have the old 80 to 400 nikor lens. It's a good sharp lens but the focus is slow and the VR just doesn't work that well. But thats not true of the new 80 to 400. It is also very sharp, the focus is almost instant and the VR is just great. Yesterday I took two pictures of a small bird in flight. Hand held at400mm and they are both very sharp. Good choice for me even at the higher price. Lee

quality issues

By

from Middletown, NJ

i purchased the 80-400mm lens and the rear lens cap is welded on. I tried to remove it with huge plummer pliers along with other methods. I have over 12 lenses and never had this problem. I am not impressed with the quality of this Nikon lens. And it is made in Japan!!!

Bad quality

By

from Middletown, NJ

I purchased this lens today and the rear lens cap is welded to the lens. I could not get it off even with a huge plummer wrench. I have well over 12 nikon lenses and I am very disappointed with the quality control of this lens. And it is made in Japan, which in the past was not this poor.

Excellent Execution

By

from MN

Let me start by saying I own this lens and the fantastic 200-400 f/4 VR. The 80-400 is ideal for travel, and hiking, whereas the 200-400 a bit cumbersome. The 80-400 is nearly half the weight, but similarly impressive in terms of optical performance. Beautiful, color rendition and sharpness at all focal lengths. The build is strong and competent and quite capable of withstanding hash environments. The collar works, but I would consider it an overall disappointment on an otherwise fine lens. I swapped my collar out for one by RRS, which is much better. The VR is amazing! I have handheld at 400mm and 1/3 sec., on my Df, and produced images that are quite usable. The price may seem high to some, but I believe it is worth it. I recommend this lens without reservation!

Great lens for the money.

I purchased this lens for a whale watching trip to Mexico. I like the weight of the lens. Easy to hold. The picture of the white wing dove was the very first picture with this lens.

Outstanding safari lens

By

from Palo Alto, CA

I debated long and hard between the new 80-400 (which had just been released) and the 200-400 for my D800E before leaving for an East African safari. I had the chance to try out the lenses side-by-side at the camera store, then went home and compared at very high resolution on a large monitor. With each lens stopped down one stop, if there was a difference in sharpness, it was beyond my ability to see, even at maximal pixel-peeping resolution. The major advantage of the 80-400 was its being half the weight and size (and, of course, much less expensive). In the field, the lens did not disappoint. I used a bean bag for most shots, but also did some hand-helds and was very impressed. I used it on a D7100 body to gain the extra DX reach, and even used it on both bodies with the TC-14 II teleconverter. The only thing you give up with the 80-400 is being able to shoot at 400 mm at f4. Since the best time for game viewing is often during early morning or near sunset, this was a minor inconvenience. However, with the fantastic high-iso resolution of modern DSLRs, this was easily compensated for. One piece of advice that also helped me decide was to get whichever lens I would feel most comfortable using, not just on safari, where you spend most of your time in a vehicle, but for my other pursuits, e.g. hiking. No question that the not having the extra 4 lbs to carry around made the difference. This is an awesome lens.

Best Value for a Quality, Portable, Telephoto Zoom Lens

By

from San Diego, California

This first generation Nikon 80-400mm auto focus zoom lens was Nikon's first vibration reduction (VR) lens. I have owned it for over ten years and it continues to amaze me in terms of optical quality, resolution, and portability. Below is a photo of a Giant Panda taken with a Nikon D700 camera body, a shutter speed of 1/125 of a second, an aperture of f/5.6, an ISO of 200, a focal length of 270mm, an exposure mode of Program, a light meter mode of Matrix, and a white balance mode of Auto. A Nikon SB-800 Speedlight was used for fill flash to enhance the colors of the panda's fur.

Bonafide 400mm Super Telephoto Lens

By

from San Diego, California

This Nikon 80-400mm second generation lens is a significant improvement over the original lens (Nikon's first VR lens). Not only is the auto focus on this newer lens faster, due to the introduction of the AF-S function, the optics are redesigned as well. The size and weight of this lens allow one to conveniently walk around with a very powerful focal length. Attached is a photo of an unsuspecting sidewalk entertainer in Las Vegas, Nevada, taken on "The Strip" (South Las Vegas Boulevard) near the Bellagio Hotel. The shutter speed is 1/250, the aperture is f/5.6, the ISO is 125, and the focal length is 330mm, taken with a Nikon D800 camera body.

Very versatile lens. Sports. Stop Action. Portraits. Great resolving power. Pairs very well with FX body. Love it.

By

from St. Louis, MO, USA

Been using this lens for over 1 year now. Can't say enough about it. It's been fantastic with D7100, D610 and D750. It's become the goto portrait and pet around the house lens, too. Didn't expect that. It started as a 2 kids in soccer lens. We have a 28-300 FX VR lens on the camera all the time. And a quick swap to this lens for games was the plan, and works very well for that. As I said, portraits and pet shots (handheld or tripod from 15 feet) are AWESOME. It was a big purchase but FX glass holds its value much better than camera bodies. I can freeze action and see my sons faces clearly from the other corner of the field in daylight game shots with an FX body. I'd do it again in a second.

ROBERT G  i use a D7000. No reason this lens won't work on the 5100. It is a great lens!!!! You might want to read the review of the lens on the Ken Rockwell site. I am sure that he makes reference to the bodies that will accomodate it.
