I bought these Nikon Monarchs for birding after reading many positive reviews on line. Previously I used the Nikon Action line and wanted to upgrade. What initially struck me about the Monarch binoculars at the first use was how lightweight they are. In addition, the image is very bright compared to other binoculars at this price point. They "feel" like much more expensive binoculars. As other reviewers have noted, the lens caps are somewhat annoying and have a tendency to flip back up and obscure the lens. They appear to be easily detachable, however. I would definitely purchase these again.

My last pair of Nikon binoculars were Made in Japan. These are made in China. Quality seems up to Nikon standards, but I didn't understand that these were made in China. I am a one man army who doesn't care to support Communism.

I purchased this binocular for myself after reading the rave reviews in birding magazines - I love it - it can't be beat, particularly at this incredible price. I then bought this one for my spouse - she is just as impressed! I highly recommned this for even the most experienced birder!

I bought these for a whale watching trip. Sharp focus even on a boat in big swells.

Objective lens covers attach by way of a recess in the binocular body and a plastic extension of the lens cover. If inadvertently pulled loose the lens cap button that fits into this recess can be easily damaged resulting in less secure attachment of the cover when lowered for use. When this happened to me the manufacturer promptly and with no questions asked replaced the cover.

In 1968, I bought a pair of Leitz 7X42 Trinovid binoculars at a small optical shop in Frankfurt, across from the HauptBahnHauf--for US$280. I used them all my life for birding and general use. In 2010, while transiting Rome's main train station, my shoulder bag was stolen--and with it, my beloved Leitz. I sought to replace the Leitz one-for-one. But this Leitz now cost US$1100--if you can find a good pair at all. So I went shopping--to Adorama. I found the Nikon Monarch 8X42. I bought Nikon Monarch for substantially less than the Leitz Trinovid cost in 1968--and the Nikon Monarch is more than equal in quality. In fact, the Nikon is BETTER.

This product came highly recommended by professional birders. I am an advanced nature photographer using Nikon Equipment... trust me the quality is there. I am most pleased with the Monarch.

I like the light weight and the ease of focusing on an object, especially using it for bird watching where you have to focus quick or miss the action.

Objective lens covers are designed to unsnap and hang down and out of the way of their own weight. They do this quite well, but when I attempted to pivot them to the side I learned that they were not intended to be used this way and attachment to the binocular body was damaged. [...] Nikon sent a replacement lens cover in days. I am very happy with both the quality of the glass and the service from Nikon [...]. I use these binoculars mostly for wildlife viewing from a kayak and I only wish I had purchased them long before.

I ordered the 2009 ATB but received the 2010! I did compare these to $1700 Swarovski EL 42's (10x42) from Academy Sports. The Swarovski's were top notch and served as a bench mark for the Monarch for the 20 minutes I used them in the indoor "hunting grounds"You will not be disappointed in either set particularly in how close a [$] pair of binos comes to the big dogs. The front one piece protector cap will be replaced but the Monarchs will do just fine out in the field.
