I bought this lens a few weeks ago and it's been incredible to shoot with. It's extremely quick and great in low light. The 1.8 f-stop allows for a creamy bokeh. For a long time, I dreamed about one day purchasing the 85mm 1.4G, but now that I've purchased this one, I am extremely content.

Just got it today, looks used
This is the second one I bought. I love the first one but I ended up giving to my brother. I bought a 24-70mm to see if it can be a replacement, but I felt the 85mm still performed better. I was so excited to get this but a bit disappointed as the item looks used or at least open box - there's tear on the plastic packaging, manual is creased. I only took a couple of test shots, seems to be ok, so hopefully I don't have to go through the hassle or returning. I know there's a Nikon warranty, ju...View full Review

I know there's a Nikon warranty, just don't like the feeling I didn't get a brand new lens when I paid for one. Maybe I'm being too picky lol. Anyways I will probably try another store next time, still need a wide angle lens.

An everything lens that is the sharpest!
I waited three months for this lens because of a special price issued by Adorama in June 2014. At one point, it was unsure if the offer would be delivered by the manufacturer but it finally came through. I saved $160 on this lens thanks to Adorama. Is it in good condition? The best. I used it immediately to take portraits and landscape shots and it certainly requires good technique but delivers top notch results as expected from all reviews of this lens. I had waited 3 years for this lens and waiting an additional 3 months for this deal was a cakewalk. Thank you Adorama!
This lens is so sharp and reasonably priced!
Just upgraded to an FX body and so still experimenting, but have found a terrific use for this lens on my old DX body. It works great as a semi-telephoto lens, which I use to snap awesome action pics of kids' hockey games! The arenas are often dimly lit compared to NHL games, but this lens lets me take bright, crisp pics at 1/500 of a second from behind the glass. At larger apertures, the skaters appear so crisp and colorful, and really pop against the soft backgrounds. Lens not long enough to shoot from stands or bench; guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and get the 70-200 mm f2.8 and pop that on my D610.
I had heard great things about this gem, yet it has surpassed my expectations. At less than $500 it is fantastic value. I took some comparison shots with my 80-200mm F2.8D and I could see the difference on the camera monitor without any magnification - the shots taken on the 85 1.8 just popped at f2.8. Comparing later on Photoshop the difference was profound - sharpness, contrast, colour rendition and chromatic aberration were just night and day better. One would obviously expect the latest fixed focal length lens to trump an older zoom, but I was blown away by how great the difference was and the fact that I could even see it as soon as I glanced at my camera LCD. I was also pleasantly surprised at the heft, given the reviews which made it sound so delicate. It feels solidly made given the materials and is a lot nicer to hand-hold for longer periods than my beloved 80-200 tank. The focus ring, whilst not as good as that on the zoom, also has much better dampening than I was expecting. Great product, great price. More like this please Nikon!
I am a semi-pro photographer (it isn't my full time job, but I have been doing this professionally for 5 years). I used to own the 85mm 1.4 (the previous generation) but sold it because it seemed to always have focusing issues, was heavy, and wasn't being used much. I decided to buy the 85mm 1.8 when it went on sale so that I could have a longer prime lens in my arsenal. I could not be happier with this purchase. This lens has become my favorite go-to lens for portraits. It is always on my camera now. The bokeh that this lens creates is out of this world. It is extremely sharp and light-weight. You cannot get a better value for the quality of this lens at this price. If you are on the fence, just GET IT! It will change your photography.
I've been making do with just a single prime - Nikon's 50mm f1.4 - while covering my other needs with zooms for their obvious flexibility. But with the rebate I finally opted to order an 85, and I'm utterly smitten. Impressive AF, excellent bokeh, remarkable clarity, and the lens just feels right riding my D610 - balanced in such a way that you want to hold it up to your eye. WIth the benefit of hindsight I should have given in to the urge to buy this lens much, much sooner.
So good, it's hard to justify buying the 1.4g. This lens currently produces the best color & sharpness out of any other lens I have used in the nikon line up. Scary sharp! See more photos at www.photosbykristopher.com
great portrait lens for the price. great bokeh
I bought this lens to use with my DX-format D40 and FX-format N80. I needed a fast portrait lens with AF and metering, hence the choice. From a very limited testing so far, I can say this is a great addition to my bag of lenses. I mostly own manual focus older lenses, they work well, but this lens renders many of them useless. Being primarily a FX lens, it offers a good set of features for a DX camera: first, despite of its relatively large diameter compared to standard DX lenses, it fits small D40 body perfectly, not blocking any essential spots like built-in flash; it has an ability of manual focusing in AF mode, and as only the central part of the image is projected on the sensor, it is free from vingetting and extremely sharp. On DX, it behaves as 127-135mm lens, which is slightly longer than an ideal portrait focal length but I found it can be used for portraits from 7-8 feet distance. At f/1.8, its DOF is very shallow, so a tripod may be needed for proper focusing. It also lacks VR feature that is more important for DX-format camera but again the tripod should solve this. Overall, this is a very good purchase, and I would recommend this lens.
