About Nikon RT-1

The Nikon RT-1 is an optional accessory tripod collar ring designed specifically for the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. When shooting with a D-SLR and the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens, the RT-1 can be used to attach the lens to a tripod instead of attaching the camera's body directly to the tripod. Attaching the lens to the tripod instead of the D-SLR body can be done when additional support is desired, such as when shooting with a teleconverter.

The Nikon RT-1 is commonly used for Landscape/scenery and more.

Pricey but wouldn't be without it

Tripod collar ring is a must have. Just attach to monopod or tripod, unscrew knob, rotate camera to vertical or horizontal position, tighten knob, you are there! The camera stays centered over tripod versus swinging out in midair without collar.

Not Really Necessary, But Useful

The beautiful new 70-200 f/4 is light enough that you don't strictly need a tripod collar. You can put the lens on a camera and carry it all day, unlike the situation with its big brother. But when you put a D800 and 70-200 f/4 on a tripod using the collar, the center of gravity is nearer the center of the rig, making any disturbance from vibration or the wind less serious. If you're looking to approach perfection you probably need the collar.

Eye-watering price.

Asking this much money for what is little more than a simple piece of metal cannot be justified. Nikon makes complete lenses for this price. At the same time it is highly desirable to have. I see a huge opportunity for 3rd-party manufacturers here.

Better than I expected

I looked at this Nikon product and a few similar aftermarket products, the Nikon mount was just perfect, a bit pricey but well crafted.

This product should be included with the 70-200 f/4 lens...period!

Overpriced!!! Do you really want that much weight on the body. Most quick release systems can't handle it.

Wish it came with the lens.

Questions about this item:

Lionel B  Will this mounting ring fit a 300mm f/4.5 AIS lens?
STANLEY H  Lionel, I don't know. Not sure what that lens looks like. I measured the inside of the collar- 68mm or 2 11/16", approx. You might also ask Nikon. Hope this helps, Stan
Lionel B  Thank you Stanly, the diameter of the lens is 60mm
Shopper  will all tripod rings work with all tripods?
Russell L  It's probably possible to make any tripod collar work with any tripod, but if there's a problem it's more than likely going to be the diameter of the mounting stud. There are standard 1/4" and 3/8" studs. There may even be other non-standard ones, and I'm not sure all the threads are the same pitch. In any case it should be possible to jury rig a fix if the stud doesn't fit your tripod collar, since there seem to be adapters available for most situations.
