Questions & Answers

Shopper : Why does it include a ss600 case instead of an SS 900 case?DAVID S : My purchase came with SS-900 case.LARS M : Must be a packing error. Mine came with the correct case(ss900).PATRICK H : I didn't check any numbers, but the unit fits nicely into whatever came with mineMEL C : It might be a typo. You can call Adorama first to confirm and fix if it is a typo. The ss600 is for the sb600. I don't think it will fit the sb900. I think the difference is the extra pocket for the diffusion dome. When I bought mine it came with the right case.MYER MD B : Well my SB-900 included a SS-900 case. wonder if it is a misprint in the ad
kevin o : can the sb900 be used with the nikon d50 ?PAUL A : I don't know why it couldn't, from an electronics/interface standpoint. However, it is significantly larger than the SB600 or SB800, so it might make your D50 a bit too top-heavy. Since I think the SB700 has replaced the SB600 now, you might consider getting that one (or a used SB600/SB800) instead, especially considering the size of your D50.
Shopper : what does guide #132 mean how much to overnight to Tampa ,Fl. Free?SHAYA T : At a theoretical aperture it will let you know how far the flash goes at a given F Stop. Sorry, shipping is not free on the Flash itself.. try one of the KITS. However, rush is never free. UPS BLUE 2 Day $22.75 or UPS Overnight $46.05

Not good for rapid fire sequences

Getting hot in rapid shooting is only downfall

Overall it is a great flash. Put's out a lot of light, and is very consistent. Just make sure you don't plan on firing it a lot at one time or it will overheat and then have to let it cool down.

Phenominal flash gun...

Incredibly versitile flash gun. Often used for 50 ft distance night time wildlife photography as well as for high speed action stopping photography. Makes my Metz 45 CL 4 look old fashion!

Quality product, versatile functions

Used this flash as a military photographer in Afghanistan for six months. It held up to a myriad of conditions to include extreme heat, cold and sandblasts. The recycle is fast, could be faster: it recycles faster with newer batteries. Also wish it had a battery meter. All around though I find Nikon products to be among the best and this flash is no exception.

Great, but hot... not in a good way

Great flash, with great features, but it can overheat quicker than it really should. Great for portraits. Not so great if you're a wedding photographer who might be banging away on it in low light conditions at an event. I want to love this flash, but I can't. Nikon replaced it with the SB910, and it seems the main enhancement is better heat management. Other than that... it's just awesome.

Good flash except for overheating

Nikon should be ashamed of itself for releasing this flash. What good is all its good stuff if it turns itself off for 10-15 minutes after not that many shots because it is "too warm." UGH Now they come out with the 910 that fixed it - they should have fixed it for everyone for free!

Quality has a price - and this is no exc

I do love this flash. It's a bit big, but I'd rather have more power then not enough. I read a lot of people having problems with overheating. I have not experienced this yet, however I think it's a stretch for Nikon to come out with a new model (910) to cure overheating concern, then charge $50 more for it. Talk about gouging.

Great speedlight

This is my second SB900 flash light. I use it with my pocket wizard for i-TTL flash lighting. Many people mentioned a overheat issue when using it for continuing shotting. However I did not intend to reproduce the issue. From my experience, I never got the issue anyway.

Awesome flash

I own four of these, and for small to medium-sized lighting jobs, these are definitely up to the task. There's debate between flashes and studio strobes and what's better.....well obviously if you need a LOT of power, these aren't the ideal choice. If you need portability and don't require a huge light spread, these are fantastic. The heads on the SB900's are large and attaching light modifiers to them is much easier than any other Nikon flash, which is one reason why I got rid of my SB700's. Many people complain about the thermal shutdown feature, but you can turn this off and then it won't shut off on you in the middle of a wedding....you just have to pay attention to the temperature. What I typically do is have an extra flash with me and just swap out flashes to let the other cool down....takes all of a few seconds. The SD-9 battery pack works very well, and cuts down recycle time and increases battery life. This package makes it a pricey setup, but you get what you pay for. If you're shooting weddings and/or studio work where you need speed, portability, versatility and reliability, these fit the bill. The supplied gels also work great when automatically balancing flash to the color temp of tungsten or fluorescent lighting....I keep an orange gel and green gel on two of my flashes so they're ready to go right out of the bag if I need it. The power output this gives for a hotshoe flash is pretty impressive. I wish Nikon had the little sliders on the sides for light pattern and Manual/TTL like the SB700 does, but I'm sure that'll come along in the next iteration.

Excellent flash.

After using this, I am in love with the nikon cls system. It is versatile, super simple, and can create a huge difference in photos. I have used this mainly for macro/portrait work off-camera in a spare hand or on a stand. No complaints at all! Menu is easy to navigate and the flash is plenty powerful-one of the most powerful shoe-mount flashes available.

I'm very new to photography and still learning how to use flash, TTL really helps in situations where i don't have time to play around with the flash power, only have problem when using CLS in TTL, might be just me. overall great product!

The SB-900 is the best ... for now.

I use the SB-900 to bounce flash during wedding receptions. It's important to gel for the ambient light, but I think that the gels that come with this unit are awkward to use (I recommend sticking with your own gels). The light output is excellent, and the unit is very intuitive and easy to use. However, it's a tad bulky and it overheats far too much for my taste. The overheating situation is frustrating because there's nothing you can do but wait (and hope that your second unit doesn't overheat while you're shooting with it instead). Definitely get the SD-9 battery pack if you're planning to use it for weddings, because this puppy will eat your batteries like nobody's business. I use eneloop rechargeable AAs.

Great product

Great flash, upgraded from the SB600. This flash is so much easier to use and understand and the output is much greater. Perfect in every way. Will be testing it for a wedding in two weeks and don't think I'll be disappointed in anyway.

Very easy to use and versatile

A complicated flash but either using the book or taking a class makes it much less complicated. There are a few quirks that are not outlined in the book but plenty of on-line help. Note that it is a pro quality flash, so bear that in mind when selecting your flash product.

Favorite capabilities of SB-900. 1. Ease of changing between flash remote and master. 2. Ease of changing power settings for each remote flash, and master. 3. Great way to add wireless flash to film and digital bodies without master-remote capability. 4. Perfect master commander for use with multiple SB-600's and SB-800's.

Outstanding Speedlight

By Lysandro T.

One of the best products I've seen from Nikon. It produces consistent colors, even in very dark light conditions or extremelly bright backgrounds. Recycling is unbelivably fast, even at 8 fps in my D700.

SB-900 Speedlight provides Nikon digital SLR photographers with a flash capable of a wide zoom range, increased versatility, faster recycling time, and a wealth of intelligent features to enhance the already vast functionality of the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS)

The SB-900 offers a zoom range coverage from 17 to 200mm, three light patterns; "Center-weighted" provides the highest guide number "Standard" provides a familiar pattern, similar to the SB-800 and "Even" which delivers the most consistent edge-to-edge coverage, and an advanced wireless i-TTL capabilities allowing the utilization of multiple Speedlights

. The SB-900's innovative design has the xenon flash tube and reflector system moving independently - allowing for a wider zoom range from an extreme wide angle of 17mm (FX) to the telephoto setting which reaches 200mm without the aid of accessories or as wide as 12mm in DX mode with the built-in wide-angle panel engaged.

The SB-900 offers a quick recycle time of 4.0 seconds (at full power) with four Alkaline AA batteries which drops to a mere 2.3 seconds (at full power) while using four rechargeable NiMH batteries about 25 percent faster than the SB-800 with its fifth battery attachment.

Controls for setting the wireless Master and Remote have been relocated to the outside of the unit for easier access and frequently used functions are easily adjusted with a new Rotary Select Dial. A larger LCD screen is easy to read, even in direct sunlight, and photographers can assign "My Menu" hotkeys for quicker access to commonly used functions.

For the first time, Nikon SB-900 Speedlight users will have the ability to take advantage of future performance advancements. The user will be able to download the firmware onto a flash media card and upload it to the flash unit through select digital SLR cameras.*

The SB-900 Speedlight is Nikon's most intelligent Speedlight ever, created in response to the needs of today's digital photographic professionals. When using the included fluorescent or incandescent filters and adaptor, the flash automatically recognizes what filter is being used and automatically adjusts white balance accordingly on the latest Nikon D-SLRs.* Additionally, the SB-900 aids auto focus with a broader AF assist beam that covers a wide 20-105mm that is matched to all of the D3, D700 and D300's 51 focus points. The bounce and swivel capability of the SB-900 has been expanded to include: tilt up to 90 degrees, down minus 11 degrees, and a full 180-degree swivel left or right, allowing more creativity for on or off camera use, or as a remote Speedlight.

* With D3 and D700 Cameras only
