• The SJ-1 allows for modification of the flash output to be matched to the background scene. This is especially useful for digital cameras where "white balance" can be controlled.
• For instance, when shooting with a flash under fluorescent lights the foreground will be white, but the background will still have a green cast. By using a green filter the flash output gets converted to match the rest of the scene, and the camera's White Balance setting can then be set to "Fluorescent".
• The blue, yellow, red and amber filters can be used for creative lighting control, and can add dramatic colors to the image, especially when more than one flash is used.

Interesting Effects... expendable produc
These are standard gel material cut so that they can be inserted into the SB-800. They do a satisfactory job of filtering light from the flash to a single color. Because it is just folded gel, they tend to leak light from the sides. Additionally, they fade and melt under heavy flash use, so these should be considered an expendable (it says this right in the manual, which you should read). This would also let you get more colors... the Yellow and Blue filter do not make green light, and doubling the florescent filter is not very affective. That all said, the filter kit is very handy and fun, and can be used to make rather ordinary scenes look amazin gin the right hands.

Good, but not Great
Ordered these to modify the White Balance on my Nikon SB-800 flash. They work pretty well and do alter the WB as they are advertised. Do not especially like the light weight material they are made of. Would like to see a more substantial material used. Also not overly fond of how filters need to be folded and "attached" to Flash unit.

I prefer these to cutting film and using tape. Not overly durable but what really is nowadays . . . ?
If you are using you flashes to mix with lights then these are a must have!! I have been using the SB-800 for a few years now and they are wonderful. Using them off camera to make great personal portraits and even big group shots. It is one of cheapest way of carrying full color range gels...
We all know what we can do with gels. Pricey because of the name but they are easy to mount on the flash. Pay for convenience I guess.
These color filters are gimmicks, with basically no practical application. I regret buying them. It's possible they might come in handy for some kinds of creative lighting situations where you wanted to create an unnatural look.
These plastic sheet filters are expensive also they are consumable (disposable) and disfigure with use. There are better devices to acc0mplish the same purpose.
The filter function works well and you do get multiple uses from these but I use them on an SB600 and after a few plashes the heat start to take its toll on the filter but they do the job.
A must have if you use the flash. I saw many comments complaining about the price..I agree it is a little bit pricy but they are easy to use and they fit perfectly on my SB-600. I would buy them again!!
Definate mark-up on these little Gems. I am OK with how they work but In my opinion we should be getting them for free with the flash unit. Flimsy little Die-Cut Plastic. They melt too if you get them to close to the flash. The only thing I like is the compactness.
Used for fillhlights in portraits and at Large outdoor wedding receptions for dance and bouquet and garter toss.
