Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JOHNNIE G : to up my qualityCindy w : great cameraVINCENT D : I’ve wanted this camera since I heard about it. I saw the reviews and I loved my GH4. This is full frame, and I’m excited to see the quality.JAMES P : Documentary filmingDemitri p : It’s like a mini Arri. Beautiful.EARLIE H : I purchased the S1H because I needed to upgrade from my GH4 and this was the next logical step for me.ED S : I wanted to move into stills while maintaining the highest quality video. There is no better bet than the S1H.JOSEPH L : I needed an older brother for my GH5!ALEX R : 5.9k 4:2:0 10bit internal with image stabilization, great lowlight, and full frame. Anamorphic is huge for me. There will probably be a mount that offers internal ND filters and Raw from the atomos ninja v might be great. But that remains to be seen.GRAHAM D : Selected the s1h as a centerpiece of panasonic cameras used for weddings, music videos and mixed commercial shooting.

It's a all in one camera

I own the S1H now for about 7 months and I absolutely love this camera. It's the best hands down cinema professional camera I've used in awhile. If the auto focus was just a little better this camera would be untouchable. And all its missing is a 12 bit rate.

Powerhouse camera

This camera feels like it was built for my (rather large) hands. The ergonomics are nearly perfect and shooting is such a joy.

Upgraded!

I moved up to this from the GH5 and couldn't be happier with my decision. This has already taken my photo and video to another level.

Amazing Tool for Run & Gun Image Makers

Love this camera for run & gun filmmaking! With adapters you can use Leica M lenses for a lighter and more compact setup. Auto focus does not work well for video, but I love that I can turn the function dial between video shots and quickly grab some high quality stills, then go back to shooting video. Invaluable for a recent documentary filmmaking trip I took to Nepal, where everything was fast paced and I wanted to capture video and stills.

Best all-rounder camera (for me anyway)

I travel and hike a lot, and I need to be able to carry everything myself – tripod, camera, lenses, etc., as well as extra clothes, food and water, and first aid kit, and sometime a toddler. I do whatever I can to keep everything small or lightweight (obviously not the toddler). Coming from a Canon C100/Ninja Star (shooting ProRes) and an Oly E-M5 III for stills – both of which I dearly loved, and they loved me – I am thrilled by the image quality and feature set packed into the S1H. It doesn’t make for a ultra-lightweight kit, but it’s a good option for those who primarily shoot video but also need a very good stills camera. Some of the features that won me over are: heck’a’lotta internal and external bit rate and codec options, incl. 4K/5.9K ProRes RAW output to a Ninja V; 96MP high resolution mode to shoot still subjects like artwork and non-moving landscapes; ability to customize every button, wheel, and knob to my liking and to save multiple custom modes depending on use scenario; weather sealed body (I’ve taken it out in rain, sleet, and snow); high ISO with low noise; (relatively) lightweight and compact body size; and unlimited recording. My only complaint as a former C100 user is the S1H’s lack of internal ND filters. I ended up purchasing a set of three Formatt Hitech 100x100mm NDs and a Lucroit filter holder on clearance. Wasn’t originally part of my ideal setup – more money, more weight – but I see it as a useful final addition to my S1H/Ninja V combo. Nighttime snow storm, yes please. Ten mile hike, yup. Keeping up with a 15-month old running around the house, sure thing.

Reliable and Able

All thing s considered this is the best camera I have owned, and I have owned many. It's not perfect but it is reliable, especially for time lapse and video clips. Does fine for stills as well.

Great but not perfect

At first I was pretty disappointed with Adorama and Panasonic. It took a week to receive the camera which should have took two days at the most. Then when I received the camera it had a faulty joy stick which only worked in one direction.(poor quality control Panasonic). After receiving my replacement the following week I tested the camera to make sure it worked properly and it does. Now let’s talk cameras. The camera is a best when it comes to video. Which is the reason I purchased it. I’m not interested in autofocus or stills so I won’t speak on that. The dynamic range and color science is top notch, especially in an aces workflow. The battery life great considering all of the features of this camera. For video I honestly believe it’s unparalleled in the mirrorless market right now and I’m a Sony fanboy. There are some issues that Panasonic need to take care. like all-I codec.I’m waiting to see if Panasonic and Atomos fulfill the promise of raw

This camera is amazing and the colors are out of this world!

This camera is amazing. If you're on the fence about this then jump. I have been a sony user since the a7s1 and currently own two a7iii with a bunch of sony lenses. Also, I own a fuji xt3 with a bunch of its lenses as well and this was hard for me to want to pick up another system with lenses. I love the colors of fuji and now I love the skin colors with panasonic. Full frame is great and having the ability to go 4k60p 10bit is a plus. AFC is "okay" but manageable for a live event/wedding videographer. I mostly shoot videos. I would recommend this camera for anyone debating to go FF from their GH5 or planning on future proofing your gear. I think its $ price tag is fair considering it being a hybrid cinema camera and not needing additional gear to make it work.

About Panasonic DC-S1H

PRO REVIEW by Nick Dabas, Director of Photography

"If you’re used to using any pro-level camera, you’ll understand the S1H immediately. Getting introduced to something this small and compact, I thought I was going to be facing a lot of challenges, but it has pro features like SDI timecode, full-size HDMI, it writes to small SD cards, and it’s super easy to use. The custom functions on the camera I think are the best way to set it up to your liking. Panasonic really thought about everything they put into this camera. "
