This is a good light for macro work. You can leave it on for a few shots to see what you are doing. It is not a battery hog. The flash works as well as most did in the 1950s! Since it is not a TTL, you must do manual shutter and aperature. One small problem, while you can switch on just the left or right flash on, it spins freely, so L and be R, up, down or any angle. A simple solution, put a small rubber band in the groove of the ring.

As modern flash goes the Polaroid PLMRFN works, but is not much. As a close-up light, it works well. There is no place on the box or in the instructions that claims it is TTL and it is a single contact (+ ground) flash. Adorama mislabelled this. The box claims it is for Nikon, but it would be equal on any camera with a standard simple (1950s) shoe and standard lens filter threads. Half of the lights labelled as L & R can be turned on if desired to get a shaddow, however the ring spins freely, so L can be R, top, bottom or 45 deg.

This Ring flash shows the potential of this type light. It's just too flimsy and failed in less than a year of very gentle use. It was easy to adjust and get good exposures due to simple manual controls. It was priced much lower than others and reliability proves the pricing correct. While it operated I did enjoy using it. Then it just died. While I wouldn't recommend this, and I won't buy another just like this one, it did convince me a Ring flash / light is a useful tool. In spite of the harshness of my review I got some good images with it.

The Polaroid PLMRFC macro LED ring flash attaches to Nikon hot shoes and macro-capable lenses with mounting ring diameters between 52mm-77mm- seven adapters are included with this package. The power pack attaches to the cameras hot shoe through which all synchronizing electrical signals travel.
You can control the output level of the LEDs and select all or half of them to fire - 32 LEDs for full lighting, 16 LEDs to create purposeful shadows on three dimensional subjects. You will also be able to change from flash firing mode to constant on. Constant on will let the camera decide which exposure is best and provide continuous light when using video cameras or the HD video mode in compatible digital cameras.
A ring light is the best source for close up photography. And that makes the Polaroid macro LED ring flash the perfect choice for photographers who require shadow free illumination - perfect for medical scientific and forensic photography.
