I have had this for a year and a half now, and it performs well. I replaced the battery once so far. I like the ease of overall use, as well as having one watch for the gym, my bike, and running. The GPS accessory stays put well, even on trail runs. It does take a while to find satellites though. The cadence sensor works well and was easy to install. My biggest gripe is when cycling the hrm does lose my readings, often reading low or dropping to 0 then spiking to 230 bpm. Overall it works decently, but there are drops. I have used the system for marathons, century rides, and mud runs with reliable results and good battery life on the GPS sensor.
I've used the RCX5 for 2 years, in dozens of Ironmans, marathons and ultra cycling races such as RAAM, 100s of hours in chlorinated pools, typically 10-20 hours/week. The anodization is beginning to show some wear, but it still works like a charm. The bonus you get for living with an external GPS unit is a battery that lasts for months when the unit is used as a HR/footpod monitor, and a slim profile that makes it wearable like a watch, not a gigantic lump on your wrist. The VO2 test and sports features are very complete. Its main weakness is that multisport events require you to push 3 buttons to move from swim-T1-bike-T2-run - not very convenient in a race. Still, many thoughtful features like configurable nighttime screensaver to save battery, multiple time zones at the push of a button, race pacing etc. make this a nice unit. I'm not upgrading to the newest of the new until this breaks, or some feature comes out that I 'can't live without' (maybe pedal power meter?)
Great HRM I bought it 3 months ago to replace a RCX3, this one is excellent for biking and running because of the big screen, it's lightweight so you don't feel it when you are training. Good work Polar
I absolutely love my RCX5 (had it for about 16 months now) for all its features...except for the fact that it doesn't have a built in GPS. :( The separate GPS unit thing-a-ma-jigger doesn't sync up easily with my watch so when it is time to start my workout, it delays me. If only it had a built in GPS feature, that would make it perfect!! All watches made for triathletes should offer built in GPS.
I have almost had this baby for a year now. I love it. I never take it off, the sleek look, and thin size make it easy to keep it on. The heart rate sensor strap is comfortable and I have never had an issue with it.
Compared to many GPS watches out there, RCX3 looks very slick. It's very thin, and fits well on a small wrist, and you can wear it outside without looking like a workout nerd. I appreciate that the GPS unit is an external module, because 1. it makes the watch thicker, and 2. I've developed certain conviction that GPS hardware breaks down quickly (thanks to G_rmin). I detest having to plug in watches into a charger, so huge props to Polar's design team for keeping the watch in a compact, power-sipping package. Just recharge the GPS module every once in a while. I cannot comment on the durability yet since I've only used this product for 1 month, but so far so good. The buttons feel squishy - would've been nicer if they had clickier feedback, but I'm not complaining. No chafing from the heart rate band after a full marathon. One thing that I miss from a competitor product is view customization. I don't think it's available on RCX3. I didn't find a view option that puts total time, current heart rate, and current pace (min/mi) all on the same screen: I thought that was bit weird.
I've been using the RCX5 since 2011. Heart-rate training is by far the most efficient way to maximize your performance and make every second spent training count. The RCX5 is one of of Polar's top-of-the-line monitors (Zone Pointer/Lock, Fitness Test, etc). Honestly though, my favorite feature of the RCX5 is that it is built like a tank...and because it runs on a normal coin-cell battery I never have to worry about recharging it! Familiarize yourself with the tenets of heart-rate training - maybe buy an RCX5 while your at it - and you won't be disappointed.
I'm praticising triathlon in a club. in order to train smarter I bought this watch and very convince about few features, especially the Zone Optimiser ! probably the best feature on the polar range of product. but as a triathlete it's not the best product, probably the V800 ? I'll try. so why not the best product, because in a race, you can't record it as a multiple sport activity, swim, transition, bike, transition and run. too bad if you want to compare one race to another... and it doesn't track the swim activity in a pool... apparently the V800 will. and the polarpersonnaltrainer portal was not designed for a multiple sport activty, the training program are not made for swimming, cycling and running in a week. it was more designed for doing sport really separately. thus I switch to another brand who designed a product for triathletes, I hope I'll come back to Polar because I missed the zone optimiser.
I like the watch features but not its quality. All buttons have fallen off the watch. The first 2 within 3 months of purchase. They were replaced by a Polar retailer but they eventually fell off again as well as the other 2 buttons. Now I have a useless watch.
