Questions & Answers

Sarah M : Since this isn't Canon brand, will it attach directly to my camera or do I need to buy a mount?WILLIS M : Mine came with affixed Canon mount. I don't anything extra to use it! It is manual focus. Focus is a little stiff but is maintained well aT the setting. Aperture is set manually. Like the "good old days" you have total control. Very sharp lens. Now i'm inspired to go out to take some pictures with mine!LUIS O : No mount needed. Many third party conapnies make lenses for Canon as long as they specify thats it's for Canon. This lens also has a Nikon and Sony version. Please note that this is a mauial focus lens and despite the deacription it does not have focus confirm, only the Nikon version has it, Adorma just copy pasted the same text for all the versions. That being said this lens is suprinsingly sharp and its my go to lens for most of my cinematography.THOMAS L : It will attached directly to your Canon EOS camera mount.MYKEL F : Mounts directly to the camera body.THOMAS M : Yes. As long as lens says for Canon EOS it should fit with no adapter.. SANTA PHOTOS BY TOM-Portrait StudioGUSTAVO G : Yes directly its is a very good lenseMICHAEL L : Yes, it will attach to a Canon Ti5-4-3-2... which has an EOS mount.GRAHAM S : it attaches directly.MICHAEL H : Canon, over the years, has had a few different mounts, but if your camera has the EOS mount, no adapter is necessary. There are some versions for the Nikon camera and I don't think there is an adapter for THAT! You lose the ability to zoom AND auto-focus but the f/1.4 and the low price are a good compromise. And the pictures you get are excellent!CRAIG C : I Have a Canon 7D and it fits and if you adjust right you will get some very good pictures.
Shopper : Will this lens work on Canon FF bodies? I have a Rokinon / Pentax mount w/adapter that works fine on my 40D, but not on my 5D. Too close to the mirror assembly. Not sure if this is because of the original Pentax mount or if it does not fit any FF for any reason?GRAHAM S : Works great on my 5D3NOEL M : This lens has an EF mount, no need for any adapters/converters for a 5D.LEZLEY A : Hi I can't honestly answer. I think the question is best for their customer service team. Good luck!
IVAN H : In the description for this lens it say that there is an AF confirm chip. I've been doing a lot of research on this lens (also Rokinon, Samyang, Bell Howell) Apparently all these brands make the same lens, but they all say that only Nikon has the AF confirm chip. Does this Canon EF mount lens actually have an AF confirm chip and if so, do any of the other Rokinon, Samyang, Bell Howell 85mm 1.4 lens have it as well (for Canon)?LUIS O : This lens does not come with a AF confirmation chip. It seems they copy pasted the same description on all of the versions of this lens. You can however purchase it separately and install it yourself, I have seen several videos online on how to do it. I did the same research and bought this lens thinking that it would include the chip pre-installed but this was not the case. I even called to verify with and expert but they weren't familiar with this particular lens. I only found clarification of this at the bottom of the page where is says "Adorama expert Advice", it confirms the lack of focus confirmation on the Canon version. On a side note, i have read that the confirmation chip isn't completely accurate since it's technically just an ad on and not built it on any version so it's not worth having the chip anyways. I personally zoom in in live view and manually focus. I mostly use it for video and shots I can be patient with (no run and gun). Otherwise it's actually a really good lens at least until you can afford another f1.4 with auto focus.MICHAEL H : I'm not sure what a AF confirm chip may be but the Canon camera that I have is now about five years old and I'm sure that it does NOT have such a feature. I bought this lens as a portrait lens which could be used to selectively focus on a limited plane, thereby emphasizing the "portrait" and throwing the "background" out of focus. There is a tradeoff in manually focusing the lens. On the plus side, YOU get to choose the point of maximum focus despite what an averaging meter might say. On the negative side, the normal viewport of the camera is not meant to provide precise focusing information, a condition common to almost all modern auto-focus cameras that I know of. In summary, I bought a lens for a reasonable price that does what I wanted it to do admirably at a slightly less than professional level of return. Since I am NOT a professional, I find that the lens and I are a match for each other and am well pleased with my purchase. I cannot comment on the other similar lenses mentioned since I have not looked into their specifications.JUN K : Only the Nikon version has the AF confirmation chip and this is true for other lenses made by this company. Also, you are correct that all those different brands are exactly the same lens. Using an all manual lens like this takes lots of practice and patience, even if you are not a beginner. But if you can learn to work with it, it can produce some stellar images, comparable to lenses that are many times more in price. Hope that helps.Derek L : I have the pro optic for canon. No ad confirm chip.KEN H : No, the Canon EF version of this lens does not have autofocus.

Great lens!

I was hesitant to buy this when I saw that it was an all manual lens - but have no fear! It's amazing! I can't put my camera down! It's still very easy to use, and it creates beautiful images and beautiful bokeh.

A Manual Lens Worth Considering

This lens is hard to beat for the price. Very wide and excellent optics are obtained by not spending any production dollars or volume in the lens body on Image Stabilization or Auto-Focus. It's a purely manual lens, however, semi-automatic function is still available. It will not read its aperture in the camera as there is no electrical connection between the camera and the lens. Manual function users will simply set the aperture via the ring on the lens rather than the aperture wheel on their camera, and the speed as they normally do, consulting their light meter, histograms or experience. For semi-automatic operation, set the camera to Aperture Priority, choose the desired aperture on the lens aperture ring and the camera will set the shutter speed automatically. Of course, you focus it yourself just like photographers have been doing for the majority of years in which cameras have been available. Your camera focus 'beeper' might give you assistance in some lighting situations. All in all, with f/1.4 capability, there is nothing close to its price/performance ratio. Are there any negatives? Perhaps a bit more flair then lenses that are many times its cost when at an acute angle to the sun.... Then again, facing directly into the sun is not a generally recommended photographic technique....

Where's the biult in Chip for Peaking???

The lens is fine when using high contrast photos. However the chip for peaking indicator is missing and not present. Its a totally manual Focus lens which does have focus problems in formal portraits.

Great Lens for the Money

Great lens for the money, if you like Zeiss, manual focus high quality but don't want to pay a lot, then get this lens. For $230 more I could've got the Nikon 1.8G which has better iq imo, AF, body controlled aperture, durable plastic and not be a third party lens. However I am completely satisfied as 85 is not my main lens but do enjoy having a quality prime. BTW this lens is metal, stout, well built and will probably last several lifetimes. Sharpness at 1.4 is stunning if focused correctly I use the >0< indicators on the D600 works almost as fast with practice, plus you get that extra "link" to your camera.

Take far better portraits!

This is a manual lens. Manual aperture, manual focus. Operated by you the photographer. This is why a large piece of glass with this large of an aperture is this cheap. The camera will do almost nothing (outside of a focus conformation light sometimes) for your shot. Its up to you, hence the word "Manual". On a tripod, shooting a portrait or filming a vid this lens is a blast to use. I found it far easier to find focus with live view at first but with practice and some fiddling with the Dioptic dial on the camera the view finder is just fine now. I bought this one to replace the Canon FD lens I have that needs an adapter to EOS. Sports? Kids on the run? Not the lens you need. Portraits? Cool movie effects pulling focus and fade outs? Perfect for the money. When I hit the big time I will buy the Canon L 1.2, but for now... this lens does a great job. The only reason not a five star rating for me is that the Canon focus conformation light inside the camera through the lens is hit and miss. I just use the live view on the 7D or shoot connected to my Mac mostly.

I don't recommend

Unless I got a lemon, besides the focus being manual, everything else is below manual. I cannot adjust the aperture through any dial on my Canon 40D. The only way to adjust the aperture is on the lens itself. I called customer service and said I understood that the lens is manual focus, but that I can't change or even view the aperture setting from my camera. He said that he is aware that the lens does not have aperture priority. This is very misleading in the information provided on the website about the lens. The lens does not have shutter priority either. I can change the shutter speed through my camera, but it does not alter the aperture setting. Again, the only way I can see the aperture setting or change it is to take the camera from my eye and read the setting on the lens. I hope for everyone else's sake, I got a lemon...but I'm not sure.

Beautiful Lens

I use this lens on my 5D and 7D all the time strictly for video, i love it the lens has a nice "drag" when finding focus, it feels like a much higer priced lens. I have compared this to many other lens including Nikons, Zeiss, and the optical quality is nil. This lens is prone to lens flare but generally I like that anyways. I'd give this lens 5 stars for the price and quality at that price is above 5 stars, but not having autofocus for when I do photography is a 1 star reduction.
