Upgrading to HID lighting from standard halogen bulbs not only means better visibility at night but also less power consumption and longer bulb life. HID (high intensity discharge) lights, also known as Xenon, produce a light that's 3 times brighter than halogen while consuming only 3/4 of its power. This reduced power consumption means not only less energy requirements but also minimized strain on the battery as well as on the vehicle's overall electrical system. HID lighting improves nighttime driving safety as it helps the driver see further in the dark and also makes the vehicle more visible to others, in particular when the vehicle is coming around a bend.
Another safety advantage of HID bulbs is the intense white or blue light it gives off which helps the driver spot animals and other obstructions at night as opposed to the yellowish hue emitted by halogen lights which could hinder nighttime viewing. HID lighting is particularly advantageous to farming and off-road vehicles as it affords a 70 percent increased viewing radius as well as the ability to control the angle of the beam from spot to wide, depending on the specific light type. Furthermore, because there is no filament the chance of the bulb blowing due to the jolting of the vehicle is greatly reduced. In fact, the overall life of an HID lamp is 10 years, about 3 times longer than halogen.
