Questions & Answers

Reynaldo O : Can these be used on an SB-600?Matthew G : Yes, I use this on the SB600 without any limitiations.MICHAEL L : No Mike LigettTHOMAS C : They should fit most shoe mount flashes without a problem.THOMAS S. M : I am note sure but I would assume that it will fit most strobes. I have Sigma flashes and off brand flashes that i use and there is no problem using the filters. I tape mine on. i don't have a filter holder. You should be ok using the filters. If you have a filter holder just see what sizes that it takes. Hope his helps.DUSAN T : I don't know, I use it on Canon 580 EX. SCOTT L : Yes, but you will need something to hold it onto the flash. I purchased a Lumiquest FXtra to do so when I got my filters.
Shopper : Are these marked in any way to be able to tell them apart?? (i.e. 1/2 CTO or 1/4 CTO)KRISTEN D : The filter itself is not marked with specifics, but each gel is separated by a sheet of paper listing what it is. This is an excellent collection of gels despite the headache of organization. Don't forget to get a holder, too. I use the LumiQuest Fxtra Gel Holder — it's a lifesaver!RENE K : They're interleaved with slips of paper with the name and color numbers. As long as you put them back with the same slip, it's fine, though there's enough extra length on them that I've labeled mine with a fine point Sharpie to ensure they don't get mixed up.IAN H : yes, each sheet of plastic has a paper to it with the information of the color, it's temperature, and the info on how dense the color is (1/2,1/4 etc.)LESLIE R : The filters themselves aren't marked, but there's a sheet in between each filter that distinguishes them and has that info. If you lose the little sheets of paper you're on your own!PETER LA D : Unfortunately, here are no markings.VIVEK S : Not on the filter itself. There are "separation" papers, and each of those has info on it. You must keep the separation paper and Gel together or else you will tend to lose the relationship. I recollect a paper matrix chart that came with the pack and had the pertinent info on it (I lost mine). Hope this helps.THOMAS F : There is a paper insert separating each filter. If it is a CTO filter, the paper inserts are marked as 1/4 CTO, etc. Other filters are described by their color (such as #3202 Full Blue--Boosts 3200°K to 55°K followed by a wavelength chart. Hope this proves helpful. The paper inserts are very helpful if they are with the filter. If they are separated filter, they obviously aren't as useful. Thought the collection was a good value for all the filters.SCOTT L : On the filters themselves, no. They are packed with each filter separated by a white paper. On each paper it tells what each filter is. If you keep them straight, it works well, but if you shuffle them up, it's not as good. There is also a paper that gives a color chart of the filters if you do get them mixed up.RICHARD M : The filters themselves aren't marked, but the filters are separated in the package with white papers the same size as the filters which are labeled as 1/2 CTO, 1/4 CTO, etc. along with graphs of the color temperatures they filter out.
Shopper : Do these gels fit over a Canon 580 EXII flash? Also, how did you attach these to your flash without attaching velcro to your flash head?ROBERT M : These gels are slightly larger than the lens of the flash head of the 580 EX II. To attach these gels I just used a small piece of clear tape and taped the gel to the top of the flash. When you are finished just pull the tape off the flash and the gel with no ill effects to the gel or flash head.LUCAS U : They pretty much fit on every flash I own (nikon SB600 up to SB-26), so they should fit the Canon. Just use scotch tape to attach them- works like a charm!MARTIN S : They are actually too small to be functional. Need to be a 1/2 inch longer in all directions to be usefull. Light leaks and color is not accurate because of the light leaking.KEITH I : They fit on my Sony HVL-F58AM flash using the Lumiquest Gel holder. The 58 head size is very close to the 580.PETER LA D : Yes, they do fit. To hold them: 1. small piece of tape at each end, or 2. small piece of tape at one end and then use a diffuser dome to hold the rest in place. In either case there is a small amount of leakage of unfiltered light around the gel but this is not significant.JOHN H : There are a couple of ways: You could use the wide beam plate as a clamp, or use something like a Honl Speed Strap, trim an index card to fit with a little lip and use the pull-out tab of the wide beam plate and the index card to keep the gel in place.OLEK P : I do not have 580 flash, but I have similarly large YN560. Those filters work OK there, combined with LumiQuest FXtra and LumiQuest CinchStrap (or Honl SpeedStrap), but of course same setup works a bit better on smaller flash. If filters in the kit and FXtra were 1/4" wider, they would be perfect for the large flashes, and the way they are now, they are ... passable - some light is lost, a bit of stray white light gets through, but it can be used that way.MARCO P : No they don't, they are cut specifically to fit a special gel holder that has the velcro attachments. I like the selection of colors but I wouldn't recommend these if you only need say a couple of CTOs to balance your flash. The process to insert the gels into this special holder is slow and a little cumbersome. You could use scotch tape and attach them to your Speedlight but it could get messy when trying to remove it since they are cut with no slack on either side.JITKA S : I do not know the exact size of Canon 580 EXII flash, I use Olympus system. The gels are 1.5'' x 3.25", they should be slightly bigger then your strobe, you can cut them to your needs. I use LumiQuest Gel Holder & velcro strap to hold them on my flash, it works very well!

A rainbow of light

Bought these for a workshop but did not use them. I think the value is there. Certainly not something one wants to drop.... you'll never get them back in order.

GEL FILTER PACK

Used the CTO's and Plushgreen for tungsten stage lighting and florescent offices. White Balance is perfect. The size strips fits the holder for the Canon Speedlite 630. Besides the correction gels, there are many in the pack for effects.

You get most gels for the money

First time buying gels. Will be using for white balance and effects. You 55 gels when others sell only a few for similar price. Great value even though I probably won't use all 55 gels.

Great gel set

Just be careful with your Speedlite and don't set it to full power and 105 by accident like I did! Almost burned a hole in one of them!

easy to use

wide range of colors and saturation. compact ,not even noticed in my camera bag.so i always have them with me if i decide to add my own color to the subject.i tend to leave the larger studio jells at home. they easly fit and stay under the wideangle diff.of my hotshoe lites and the metz 45 ct2 and 60 ct2 without the need of an additonal holder.

Every speedlight shooter should own this

This kit is awesome. Anybody shooting speedlight flashes should own this kit, if only for the CTO and quarter CTO gels. The other gels do get some use when I want creative background colors, but it's mainly just the CTO variants that I use. In fact, I keep a full-CTO gel gaffer-taped to my primary flash head at all times, just in case. I simply move it from the flash lens to the side of the head as needed. A 1" square of gaffer tape (or masking tape) at each end of the gel secures it quite nicely. I use the quarter-CTO gels a lot when I'm shooting people outdoors, just to warm up the skin tones a wee bit. The reason I docked one star is that the kit contains only a single full-plusgreen gel for working with fluorescent lights. These days, fluorescent lights can be all sorts of colors, and I really need more flexibility when working in a fluorescent-lit room. It would be great if this kit had 3 each of full-plusgreen, half-plusgreen, and quarter-plusgreen. Sadly, the only alternative seems to be buying a full 20x24" sheet of quarter-plusgreen, cutting my own gels, and stacking them as necessary.

Great product, I would buy it again

I use this product when I am doing night painting. Small and easy to carry covers a small flashlight perfectly. The small filters make it easy to change colors in the field

Low Tech but works

Got these gels to enhance color of flash strobe. worked with older Vivitar 180 and newer Olympus FL36R. although it has 55 parts there are a limited number of colors (10?). Putting on multiples filters out unwanted color more. Low Tech, but works.

The Strobist Collection

While this collection includes very few corrective gels, it has a nice collection of colored gels for background use. The set I bought came with a LumiQuest gel holder so that it was immediately usable.

Good quality and quantity,cheapest price

Works great. You get a wide variety of filters at a very cheap price. My only wish for improvement would be to have the two ends elongated so those can be taken to the sides of the flash and held there with some kind of elastic bands. I have stuck electrical tapes to the sides of the filters and folded the tape (so that the sticky side is covered with the same tape). Now I have two permanent tongues extending from the sides of each filter which I can push under an elastic band which is always there on my flash. Now I don't have to worry about carrying some kind of tape and keep sticking tapes on my flash leaving sticky marks on my flash.

As advertised

This is a nice assortment of gels that will probably last me for years to come. I did note that one of the gels had printing accross it. Evidently, these are trimmings from larger gels?? It did not hurt it's useage, though.

Awesome kit, lots of useful colors

Great set of colors, they are a bit short for attaching velcro without modification but one reviewer posted a good solution: laminate the ends with clear packing tape, extending the gel, and put the velcro on the tape. I personally have only used them a little bit, but tape worked perfectly fine when I attached them to the small lip just above the flash window on my sb600's that holds the built-in diffuser. That gave enough distance between the gel and the flash head to keep the gel from melting. I would not put ANY brand of gel right against the flash head, ever, because of the intense heat. Whoever melts these is probably doing something wrong. There are plenty of DIY tips for making a holder for this kit online as well. It's a cheap option to try colors and get into corrective color and artistic lighting, buy it! I personally only wish they were longer for attaching to the flash head, and easier to store, the container they come with isn't practical for easy use.

Gets the job done

Im a very run and gun kind of guy when shooting models and adding a gel is a great way to ad diversity and creativity to a shot. I use scotch tape to place gel on flash. Gets the Job done fast. I would like to get the gel holder but tape does just fine.

Really Nice To Have

These have square corners. I clipped off two with nail clippers to make the gels easier to slide into the Lumiquest holder.

Awesome selection filters

Got these to filter my Nikon SB-600 flash. The color sizes are plenty big to cover the output of the flash unit, but don't leave a lot of room to attach it to anything. I used regular packing tape to "laminate" the gels so that I could attach velcro to them and the speedlight. After that, they worked great. If you use a flash in anything less than 100% daylight, you owe it to yourself to get these.

Best [$] investment

This is probably the best [$] investment in your photography if you own a flash. Even if you don't you can use these with some other small light source. Be creative and find ways to use these gels for things other than just painting a backdrop or color correcting light.

This is a cost effective way to have a lot of lighting effects. The filters are small, but enough to fill your flash head. Be gentle and take delicate care with them and they will last.

What a deal!

By ANN E.

This is a really useful pack of gels! The gels are cut the right size for a shoe mount flash (give or take a few mm's trimming) and the pack includes several of each type color correction gel (which is useful if you need to gel more than one flash for a group photo). I've not had this product very long but have been very pleased with the results. I used the Roscosun 85 to gel the flash and set my camera Kelvin to 3200 for churches and receptions which would otherwise have an amber glow f...
