Compact, works well with Canon G9

from Boston, MA  -  Photographer

This adds a nice wider range to the Canon G9 when mounted on a Lensmate or similar adaptor. It makes for some interesting perspectives otherwise impossible, and works best with some part of the composition close to the lens. Easy to put on using the bayonet mount. Some vignetting at the widest setting, but good image quality in a form factor that doesn't dwarf the G9. If you need a flash, you will have to use an external flash like the 220EX or larger. Three stars instead of 4 as this might not be worth the high price tag here - if I could have found a used one I would have gone for that instead.

Good compromise and not too expensive

Note I'm using this on a still camera, Canon G7, with the Canon 58mm adapter tube thingie (after seeing samples on the "lensmate" manufacturer site, sorry guys didn't buy your adapter!). It has to be the right distance from the lens to work well. My results are MUCH better than the other poster had here, but still a bit soft at the edges with a lot more CA than the camera itself or Canon's wide adapter (tho still useful for low res work). Also if you zoom too far the lens (plastic rim) crashes into the back element. Still, a great thing to have, for both still and movies (which show a dancing vignette as the IS does its thing if left zoomed to full wide). I think the 35mm-equivalent focal length goes to 24mm on the G7, which is very useful. Also does amazing things for the camera's macro (like producing very soft bokeh). Overall, extremely pleased given it is wider, cheaper and lighter than the Canon version. But not perfect given the inevitable corner softness.

Good for close up photos but not for panoramic the photos takes with this lens (wide angle or panoramic)have distorcion all around the image.
