Bought this to attach my old vivitar flashes to my Canon 20D, especially since I use a jackrabbit powerpack, which can lead to overheating the flash. Unfortunately the wein attachment doesn't fit snugly enough and resulted in intermittent firing- and sometimes none at all. Great when you're in the middle of a shoot and suddenly find yourself with a flash which no longer fires, and have to whip off the flash and resort to the on-camera. Very embarrassing. Thanks Wein! Not to mention that I brought back the original one (same reason) to my store , who replaced it (but same problem), then attempted to fix it with layers of price stickers (to increase snugness). It didn't work, and I should have returned the dud for the $100. I paid for it. The only positive thing I can say, is that the price has evidently since gone down, but not enough...
I wasn't aware that my old film camera flash could fry my digital. Fortunately, I found out in time. This thing is easy to use, plus, it adds a pc port to my Rebel, which it didn't have.
My biggest complaint was that they made the sync outlet bigger to insure a 'more secure fit'. I ended up toiling away for hours trying to pry open up the sync plug and then having to force it to get it to fit. I ended up stretching out and ruining my sync cord. In addition I found my strobes wouldn't fire most of the time because it reduced the voltage too much. I sent it back and used a straight Nikon hot shoe to pc sync adapter that work without a problem.
I bought this intending to use my trusty Vivitar 283 with my Pentax k100d. I especially wanted to be able to use the pc socket for off-camera use. The unit was absolute junk. The front panel containing the pc socket was TAPED (!!) on and pulled away when I tried to disconnect the pc cord. The flash only fired sporadically with the pc cord (I'm guessing loose wiring) even before the front pulled off. Tight and difficult to remove from the camera's hot shoe. The pc socket faces forward when most people will probably be using it off to the left. The hot shoe connection looks flimsy. A large flash will feel too tall and ungainly if used on-camera. Even if it worked, it's hard to believe it could be worth [$], let alone [$] or[$] in local shops. I hate to see my Vivitar go obsolete, but the $$ is much better invested in a new flash. Don't be a cheapskate and throw out money on this.
The first flash adapter was faulty and was returned. I received a replacaement within a week and it functioned very well.
The SB 25 is an old powerful Flash with unknown shoe voltage, therfore I didnot want to risk damaging my D80. I am glad Wein first warned us of the danger and did something about it!Thank them for me!!!
It works fine, but seems to have a thin metal bracket for supporting a flash. The upper electrical contact is a pc board, so it doesn't look like it would last for frequent installing & removing of the flash. Should be fine for occasional use.
Good quality. Used approx 15 times since received. Makes flash higher on camera and reduced red eye.
Having invested thousands of dollars on digital cameras I don't want to leave it to luck and hope that any cheap sync shoe adapter is going to protect my camera from potential damage from a voltage overload when using various studio strobe setups. I prefer to be on the safe side and not worry about burning out a circuit board on my digital camera.
The unit is ruggedly designed and seems to work well. The only nit I have is that its a little loose in the shoe on my Canon EOS 20d. I'm glad I bought it and I feel safer using it with my old Sunpak and Vivitar flash units.
I got this so I could use my Graflex Stroboflash with my Nikon D80 and it works great. This Wein adapter provides consistent contact, protects my Nikon digital camera from the excessive flash trigger voltage of the Stroboflash and is lightweight, strongly made and easily portable.
