You'll find this flash adapter talked about all over the net and if you have an older flash you want to use with your DLSR you need this to protect your camera from the high trigger voltage (200-300 volts) that these film camera flashes used. The Wein adapter has PC connector that is protected as well as a hot shoe that is also protected. All external trigger voltages are reduced to 6 volts, well sithin the range of most DSLRs.

The strobe system that was left from the 70's was a high voltage sync - so this protection and sync device is perfect. However my Sony is not syncing or recognizing it. I will try a light sensitive trigger to work in unison with it.

I would definitely recommend the Safe-Sync Hot Shoe device. I have used it with my Nikon Digital Camera and my Sunpak Professional Flash unit without any problems. Why discard an older, powerful flash unit in your inventory? Use the Weis Safe-Sync and save your money for other photography devices needed.

The Wein Hot Shoe is not compatible with the Nikon flash units– there is no hole for the locking pin to set into- the result is that the flash will not flash and the flash will fall off if tilted back

I just got this today... if you look at the piece you can see at the front where the flash shoe mounts there are small exposed solder joints that the flash shoe totally hits when fully pushed in which I am sure is a dead short.(stay away.!) I am promptly returning this. (I am going with the smdv 512 safe sync... (much better build)

The advantage of this device is to reduce the trigger voltage entering your camera' hot shoe down to 6 volts. This device allows the use of any older flash system with high flash trigger voltage without damaging your camera. May not be necessary on most cameras but why take the chance. Hey, it works.

A must have if you have a newer camera and older flash or strobes to regulate the voltage.

If you have older studio lights you need this to regulate the voltage to your camera. Comes with a PC port you connect the lights through while it is sitting on your hot shoe. I know people who have had this piece of equipment for years without any problems.

Used with a tethered Sunpak 622. worked great plus knowing I wasn't going to fry my D700 was comforting.

I picked up a used ring light flash and although it tested OK for low voltage, I noticed an occasional spike. To be on the safe side, I decided to purchase the Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe. It works like a charm! I don't want to gamble on a very expensive DSLR, and this was by far, very inexpensive, compared to the cost of "frying" the inside of my camera. If you are going to use "older" flash units, you need this. Get one!

Many years ago I bought a Novatron light set for portraits. The power box attaches to the flash connector on the camera body with a cable. Didn't use it for years and then got hired to photograph a prom. I had read that old flashes can blast a digital body and I searched online for help. Found out about Wein SSHSHS and got it for a good price at Adorama. It works great and stays attached tightly.

Though its a little on the spendy side, it allows me to use a legacy Vivitar 365 flash on my Pentax K110 with dialup flash levels-and perfect sync with cord connection. Also allows me to use a shoe-mounted smaller legacy flash. Of the similar units/other brands I tried, this is the best!

Pretty basic stuff here.Slip the converter into the hotshoe and it allows the photographer to use in my case my trusty Vivitar 283 strobes in either of my digital Nikons.

I bought this to allow the use of an older studio strobe system with my Canon digital camera. Although I haven't yet had the chance to fully explore the possibilities, it seems like the Wein adapter will meet my needs just fine.

I recently purchased a Vivitar 285HV flash unit for use with my Panasonic G1. Because the SC-3 Sensor Extension Cord is no longer available, I bought the WEIN Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe adapter to get the PC cable port. Using a PC cable, I can mount the 285 on a Stroboframe and connect with the PC cable. That gives me sufficient distance of the flash from the camera lens to avoid red eye on direct flash. However, I find that the WEIN PC connection doesn't work on the 285HV. As it happens, I have two other Vivitar units with PC ports, both 283s. They both behave as expected when connecting from the WEIN unit to the 283 with a PC cable. However, I don't need a PC connection for the 283s because I have the Sensor Extension Cable for them, which works just great. All three flash units fire when mounted on the WEIN Hot Shoe. So, the WEIN doesn't meet my requirement of providing a workable PC port for use with my Vivitar 285H. My Leica and Olympus will both fire the 285HV on a PC cable. The Olympus hot shoe mounted WEIN will not fire 285 over PC. I'm speculating that perhaps the WEIN reduces the flash sync terminal voltage too much to fire the 285 over the PC cable. The WEIN reduces the voltage from 4.35v to 3.80v. In addition, the specification for the WEIN claims that two flashes will fire simultaneously, one connected via PC, the other on the hot shoe. Not true! Only one flash fires and that's the one on the PC cable (not the 285, however). Next, I bought the HAMA 6950 Universal Hot Shoe Flash Adapter. The HAMA satisfies my requirement of firing the Vivitar 285HV over the PC cable. So, I spent a lot just to get the same capability I would have had with the SC-3 Sensor Extension cable for the 285 for about $10. Too bad Vivitar quit making the SC-3.

Due to the lack of a sync port on the Nikon D90, this little gem is the ONLY device to use when syncing older studio lights. Without the Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync, the power required to fire my older Norman lights would kill my camera. Sure you can drop a ton of $$$ on Pocket Wizards, but this is a GREAT alternative and even better to have on hand as a backup....

This adapter brings the trigger voltage of my old 283 flash down from it's 261 volts DC to 5.5 volts DC. I can now use it safely on my D90. The flash fires more reliably when I plug the PC cord into the adapter's PC socket, rather than using just the hot shoe contact of the flash unit.

Used both in the studio & field with older Norman & Vivitar units. The perfect fix for the lack of PC plug in Nikon digital SLRs.

I like that it lets me use my older strobes, like the 283; it lets me use my old studio strobes without frying the circuitry of my camera, and there's a wonderful old ring flash I can use now. Downside? It doesn't lock to the hotshoe. My 283 is heavy enough that there's some serious wobble going on, and I wonder if it's going to fall off one of these days. I would call that a fairly bad design flaw for something like this.

I have a Vivitar 283 flash, with 289 volts at contact, the "Safe-Sync reduced the voltage to less than 8.0 vdc works great with my Pentax K2000

This is a replacement unit - the original lasted about 2 years before it started to miss fire!!!! Other than the light construction that most likely lead to the miss firing the unit worked as advertised.

The Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe is an extremely robust unit made to professional heavy duty standards: Bullet Proof and Bomb resistant. The Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe isolates sensitive digital cameras from the high voltages that sometimes find their way down the sync cords of powerful high voltage spiking studio flash units - a must to protect your camera. If you don't use the Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe you should at the very least use a wireless transmitter such as a Pocket Wizard or Wein Wireless Transmitter to protect your camera. The great thing about this unit too is that it allows the photographer to use studio sync flash with ANY camera that has a hot shoe. I purposely purchased it to use studio flash with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 that does not have a a sync connection except for the hot shoe. The Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe worked like a charm. Its an essential part of any photographers kit as a fall back should there ever be a problem with a wireless transmitter. Don't leave home without it!

I am not a big fan of adapters, but since most digital cameras no longer have a PC terminal, this little adapter is convenient. The built in flash on my D70 is OK...but at times I prefer a bit more flexibility. With the adapter I can use a strobe frame or use studio lights.

My 5D has a PC adapter for flash, but my Elan does not. This safe-sync allows me to use my Elan with the studio electronic flash system.

Great adapter for Nikon D80 & D90
By Sonoran B.
Used both in the studio & field with older Norman & Vivitar units. The perfect fix for the lack of PC plug in Nikon digital SLRs.
SAFE SYNCS Safely reduces any electronic flash source from up to 400 volts to less than 6 volts to the camera sync input. This is absolutely mandatory for all high end and digital cameras.
Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe Safe Sync that also features professional heavy duty threaded PC high voltage input to 6 volts at the male hot shoe that the camera sees. Reduces redeye by raising shoe mounted strobe and also two can be used in tandem in effect for a high voltage input from pc or hotshoe to a low voltage pc if mounted on a camera bracket.
