It did now work as I expected. You could barely see the difference with or without it on the flash.

I took this to an event, and it worked great but I didn't see it fall off in a room of 500 people -- needless to say it was lost within minutes. There are no clips or straps or hooks to hold it in place so this is not a good product. Photographically it works well, but its not designed to stay on your light -- don't bother.

I love the fact I can use the tilt feature with this unit. Bounce with this is wonderful. For the money it is a great tool for fun and serious photos.

The SB-400 is a great little complact flash by itself. I love the light quality when it is bounced off the ceilling. I needed a diffuser when shooting indoors where ceilling bounce was not an option. I found that this diffuser did not work well when used with direct flash. I did a couple test shots using direct flash with and without the diffuser. The difference was minimal. Although it worked better when the flash was tilted at 45 degrees with the diffuser. I'd much rather use ceilling bounce without the diffuser but if that's not an option this diffuser does make a difference. I've gotten better results using a home made bounce card out of paper. So in the end it comes down to price. You can probably live without this product but with the price, it won't hurt your wallet to keep one in your bag.

Not The Best...
By kendoitall[@]Verified Purchaser from Levittown, Long Island, New York on 1/22/2008
Pros:
Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Easy To Clean
Cons:
Not enough diffusion
Best Uses:
General Use, Macro photography
Describe Yourself:
Semi-Professional
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I got it to diffuse the rather harsh light from my SB400 flash, but it does not do the job as I would like. I ended up using the flash without the Sto-Fen, instead bouncing the light off a reflector. Skip this item, and instead get some other type of diffusion gear or reflect the light off something. It's odd, because I love the way my other Sto-Fen diffusers work with my SB800 and Promax flash units.

Can be helpful if direct flash is needed
By ntospoulint from Maine on 8/9/2007
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

[...] In general, the SB-400's bounce is a more pleasing way to diffuse flash than this product can accomplish. But if you require direct flash, as I do to document technical situations, the Sto-Fen can be a great help, particularly if one uses it in accordance with the supplied instructions.

Decent for Certain Situations
By GmaxVerified Purchaser from NC on 7/10/2007
Pros:
Convenient Interface, Lightweight, Softens Light, Strong Construction
Cons:
Not Soft Enough
Best Uses:
Fill Flash, Lighting
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Overall I'm glad I have it. I'm still experimenting with it. Light is a little too harsh in some settings. Will throw a shadow if you are not careful. Seems a bit overpriced. Though [$] is not much for anything related to photography, it is just a piece of molded white translucent plastic.
