Priced right.
I was quite happy w/ the quality of light and the build construction of the umbrella. Black cover was easy to remove/put back on and the metal ends were smooth (have seen others which are unfortunately sharp).
If you're going to be using in a studio-like environment or bringing with you in a car, I think it is a great deal for the money.
The only downside I see was the length of the umbrella was a little too long for me. I was looking for something smaller, something you can pack up w/ a small lightstand and toss in a bag. If that isn't an issue, you will probably be quite happy w/ this umbrella.
I bought this as part of my first lighting kit and I ordered a separate softbox for portraits. The light off the umbrella is a bit bright, but once I got it in the correct position in my shoot it worked pretty well. Once I put the softbox on (for portraits) I decided I would probably not use an umbrella again. Don't get me wrong, if you are looking for an umbrella this one seems to be very well made and works very well for the price. Either I don't know what I'm doing, or I just prefer the softbox.
A nifty umbrella for the price, very useful/versatile as shoot-through or reflector to pair with or compiment my two other umbys.
Works like it should
Great Umbrella! The removeable cover is super easy to take on and off. You also have a reflector if you need it.
I use this as part of the flashpoint II 360A kit. Great for in home portraits. I have 2 and a sb-600. Lots of lighting options.
You can pay more but I do not see getting more than what this product offers from Adorama.
Nice design, nice price.
It works amazingly, if you get one that works. It is a really high quality umbrella, BUT be cautioned about the build quality. I had one of the metal pieces that go from the main shaft to the ribs sheer off at the joint on the rib. otherwise it works pretty good.
I was very impressed with the quality construction of this umbrella. Seems it is an inch smaller in diameter than a 40 inch umbrella but that is hardly a problem for the uses it is put to. The price was incredibly good.
Initially, I was happy with the product, but after about 10 to 15 uses, two of the ribs separated from the umbrella. After closer inspection, the ribs are only attached with light strands of thread. Even if you treat the umbrella gingerly, the stress placed on these threads will eventually cause them to break.I'd recommend saving the [$] dollars and buying a higher quality, more durable umbrella.

Dollar value is great on this item.
You get mulitple uses from this affordable umbrella - it has the white shoot through or bounce mode and then the black cover has a silver lining that can be used as a more harder quality bounce. The umbrella is medium build quality and will tolerate a moderate amount of abuse. The biggest complaint is the shaft is hollow so if you tighten the holder too tight it will crush or crimp the shaft.
I am very happy with these umbrellas, I have a few others which were much more expensive, but I use these more often. I like the fact that the inside of the black cover is silver lined. This allows much more of the light to be reflected back at your subject. Alot of the others do not have a liner on the black. Great bang for the buck!
Nice umbrella. The reflected beam is wide enough to light a small group (if standing close together). As the other reviewer stated, the silver lining on the umbrella cover should help the reflection efficiency.

I was very surprised when I received my 40" Adorama convertible umbrellas. I thought for this price (close to half the price of the big name brands), they'd be "cheap, imported" umbrellas. They probably are imported (built overseas under contract for Adorama), but from my short use of them, they don't seem to be lacking in quality or features, making them a great value.
Given the removable cover, it's obvious that this umby can be used either as a diffusing "shoot-through" white umbrella, or as a bounced-light umbrella.
What the product information doesn't say (but should) is that the black removable cover is fully lined inside in *silver*, so that when used on the umbrella it causes a lot more light to be reflected back that if the cover is removed -- as it should be.
I liked them so much that I've ordered more.
