I purchased my 430X speedlight several months ago. I had already read the benefits of a diffuser, but didn't figure I needed it--I believed this piece of plastic was way too overpriced in every store I visited. However, using the bright flash often "blinded" the surrounding crowd. The diffuser helps control the blinding aspect of the speedlite without interfering with the flash. The diffuser also helps project the flash in a more flattering manner.
