This is a decent sized piece of glass to say the least. You will need a mono or tripod to use this baby. Even with IS on my E-510, it's a bear to handhold and you will soon tire of holding the 2+ lbs. of this lens. The biggest negative I have with it is the lens creep. Hang it from your shoulder and watch the lens slowly rack out on it's own. You really can't beat the range of zoom for the price and it's a typical Sigma quality lens.

I used this lens on my e510. I sold it to a friend with a e500, and then "upgraded" to a 50-500 Bigma. You want to talk about heavy! But, after looking through my photos, I felt the picture quality was better than my Bigma, as I could get better backgrounds with this lens. So, I bought it back!!!! This is now my primary walk around lens, and I do not find it too heavy. The only complaint that I have on this lens is the lens creep! I hate it! I use a little black bungee attached from the strap to the hood to keep it from creeping. Do not purchase this lens thinking that you will hand hold it. It is too long for that, when fully extended. I use a monopod with a shoulder brace for this lens, and a tripod for my Bigma. Also, for sharpness, you have to stop it down a couple of stops. Even stopped down, it gives me much nicer bokeh than my Bigma. For the money, you can't beat it! The equivalent Zuiko is thousands!!!!

This lens is heavy, big and although you get the 400mm reach most shots require a tripod to get a usable photo. The optics quality is in the good range and the price matches the lens quality. I removed one star for weight and one more for image quality. I just feel it lacks the crisp detail, if I feel differently after more time with this lens I will update this review.

I waited for this lens since it was announced and now that I have it, I don't know what I ever did without it. With the Olymmpus E-510, I can even handhold at full range and get fantastic picts. I considered the new Olympus 300 zoom, but felt the Sigma lens was a much better deal. With the two kit lens and this Sigma 135-400, I've got 99% of my shots covered. And at this price, there is nothing better. The autofocus works great and the speed is more than acceptable. It's a little on the heavy side, but there are no other drawbacks.

I needed a long telephoto lens for shooting wildlife, and i found it. This lens provides clean sharp photographs every time. My only complaint is the weight of the lens, but with that price tag I'll live.

I bought this lens to add long zoom range options. It provides the equivalent of 270-800mm zoom. For only [$], this lens is a bargain.

Need a monopod or tripod for longer use(like a baseball game).

Covering the most frequently used focal lengths, from mid to long-range telephoto, this one convenient lens lets you handle an unprecedented range of subjects from landscapes to fast action sports. Sigma's advanced design incorporates a 5-group zoom system to achieve sharp, high contrast results throughout the entire zoom range.
Three SLD glass elements eliminate the secondary spectra effect normally associated with telephotos. The new DG multi-layer lens coating and lens design reduces flare and ghosting, and creates an optimium color balance throughout the entire zoom range, resulting in better picture quality.
And the rear focus system keeps the front lens from rotating, giving you easier use of polarizing filters. A convenient built-in rotary tripod mount eliminates vibration during shutter release.
