Sigma Corporation adds unique, anti-shake technology to award-winning 17-70mm lens
Sigma announced the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
The maximum aperture of F2.8 makes this lens ideal for hand held photography as well as producing an attractive background blur and high speed auto focus.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm (8.7..) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. It is possible to focus as close as approximately 4.7cm from the tip of the lens to the subject making this lens particularly useful for close-up photography.
Three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images.
The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high speed AF. This lens has a rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.
Bought mainly for the macro capability. Performs flawless for macro. Still can shoot landscape and other thanks to the zoom. Not too heavy, smooth operation.
I shoot a lot at the Zoo and sporting events and this lens gives me a decent zoom on a crop sensor Canon 70D. Haven't really found a downside yet.
Fantastic Lens! The image quality is superb and the focal range is perfect for cropped sensors, going from wide-angle group and landscape shots to portraits. It focuses well and quick, however it is very noisy for continuous video autofocus and I wouldn't recommend this lens if used mostly for video- Canon STM lenses are much better for quiet video autofocus (however the current STM zoom lenses don't have good image quality, especially in low light, so it's a trade-off). However, if you do manual focusing when shooting video, then this lens perfect. Another plus is the lens's weight and size- it's light and small for a lens with this zoom range and image quality capabilities.
People have various opinions about "walk-around" lenses. This one is it :-) Just wide enough, just long enough, and focuses closely for most casual random outings (walk-around). Good speed and image quality with silent focusing at a reasonable price. What's not to like?
It has been used mostly for videos. The HSM motor for video is excellent. There is no noise when lens autofocuses. I have several Sigma HSM lenses and all work as well or better than advertised. I've used them on commercial video shoots and they have been excellent.
I was looking for the fast lens to use in my travels. I believe I found it. With maximum aperture of 2.8, high speed AF, image stabilization, it's excellent for landscape and architecture shots, it serves as a macro lens too. And it's well built. I'm highly satisfied with this purchase.
Buying brands like Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron can result in a ~70/30 bet that you will get a good copy of the lens. The Sigma 17-70 (for Nikon) I bought had some major focus issues. It would constantly hunt for focus and about 8 of 10 photos were nasty blurry. The issue would increase towards the 40mm and higher. I called Sigma and the guy basically sounded like this happens all the time and suggested I send it back and try another one. I sent it back to Adorama and Adorama was great and very prompt to refund. A+++++ to Adorama. Adorama is the best!
The lens is sharp, silent & focus fast but it has problem focusing on the horizon or skies, you point it to the sky or horizon the lens will not focus.
These are my first impressions. Great lens for the price, seems solid and well built. fast quiet autofocus and plenty sharp. I Bought this lens to replace a Pentex 17-70 which died on me and this lens beats that lens in all categories
I purchased this lens for professional use. It is a bright lens which comes in a small body. It oerforms well at the moment but I don't know if it is built for heavy use.
