Very sturdy and rugged 2.8 glass

Sturdy metal construction (but not weatherproof) Can handle the challenging pro environment (and the often pro lack of care lol). A little soft on the edges but only at the focal extremes. Not weather sealed like the Olympus 12-60 or 14-54 but cost considerably less and is the only other alternative to 2.8 speed out there. Solid purchase if you don't need to get any wider than 36mm

affordable quality

at a consisitant 2.8, much quicker than a kit lens. in low light, body flash is sufficient. no need for flash attachment in casual indoor shooting. a great value.

Best lens in my bag!

I was looking to upgrade from the kit lenses. I started looking at the Oly ZD 14-54 and this one caught my eye. The constant 2.8 aperture was appealing and I didn't need the "water proof" Oly since my camera isn't either. It seemed like bigger bang for the buck. I decided to go for it & boy am I glad I did. This lens is sharp edge to edge. The 2.8 allows me to shoot low light situations without having to boost ISO beyond 800 (in most cases). I use it mainly as a portrait lens at the 30-50mm range and it outperforms the resolution of my puny 8MP sensor (E-300). I have shot my son's communion, a friend's quinceanera, several of my friends' family & kids, senior pictures, and my nephew's & nieces baby pictures as well as some maternity pics. This is my "go to" lens in every one of those situations. I am not into macro photography but have tried a few flower & bug pics and this lens does not disappoint. If you're on the fence debating on whether you should or shouldn't, get off that fence & get it! You'll be happy you did.

excellent lens

The lens has been an excellent upgrade for my E510. The picture quality has been very sharp. Going to manual requires a couple of steps to coordinate the camera and the lens, but manual focus is very straightforward. I have used the lens for landscape and macro work with very good results.

Super upgrade from kit lens

I upgraded from the Olympus kit lens. This lens gives me the lower light capability that I wanted. Plus, the images are sharp and clear, excellent colors. It is larger and heavier, but not enough to deter from using. This lens stays on my camera most of the time.

Fantastic Lens An Awesome Piece of Glass

This lens is tack sharp, gives wonderful bright images. I have been a Sigma fan for a while now. I bought this rather than the Olympus 18-50 because it is f2.8 all the way. It is heavy and built outstandingly well like the 24mm f1.8. A lens you definately will love. Not a lightweight in any way but worth every penny. [...]

• The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the new 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC MACRO lens.

This lens has a large aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 20cm (7.9..) and a maximum magnification of 1:3, making it ideal for close-up photography.

Specially designed to suit the characteristics of digital SLR cameras this lens provides a high level of optical performance. Its design incorporates both glass-mold and hybrid aspherical lens technology which offers extremely high image quality as well as a compact and lightweight construction. Minimal vignetting and superior peripheral brightness is ensured.

Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass elements provide excellent correction of color aberrations. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the petal-type lens hood (supplied) plus circular polarizing filters.

What's in the box:

  • Petal-type Lens Hood
  • Front & Rear Lens Caps
  • Pouch Case
  • 1 Year International Warranty plus 3 Year Sigma U.S.A. Extended Warranty (Total Warranty is 4 Years from Date of Purchase)
