Incredible Sharpness and Bokeh

I debated between the Sigma and Pentax 50mm lenses and I couldn't be happier with the Sigma. It's a bit heavy but it just feels solid and has a very professional look and feel to it. It actually balances very well on my K5II camera. Wide open at f/1.4 it can be a bit soft but at f/1.6 it starts to shine and by f/1.8 it's unbelievable how sharp it is. For portraits f/1.6 is just fantastic. Focus is fast and very silent and I have to admit I love the 77mm lens size as I already have several filters for it. If you're not worried about the size of the lens this one is a real keeper.

"Enjoy the lens"

Haven't had the lens long. Traded a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for the Sigma. Mounted on Sony a55. The stills are sharp and great detail. Used it to take short movies of my grand daughter's, the images were sharp and clear (reviewed them on a TV) auto focus was great, quiet and stayed with the action, for there was a lot of dancing and jumping. It is a heavy lens, but worth the glass for the performance.

Great Portrait Lens

This is a great portrait lens. When shooting wide open it gives great boken effect. I am using mine on a Pentax K-30. I like that it is so bright when looking thru the viewfinder. It is not as well built as my Pentax lens,(plastic)but still fairly rugged. As others have found out the auto focus sometimes if off a little. I found this usually happens at infinity, but with the focus override clutch it is very easy to bring it back in to focus

Great quality fast prime lens!

I purchased this to replace the 50mm focal length of my Sony Alpha telephotos with a higher quality "normal" optic. You just can't beat the quality of this optic! I've used it on both my DSLR-A850 and my SLT-A77 with beautiful results. The focus is smooth, silent and sharp, with no noticeable aberrations that I've encountered so far. Build quality is very good and tight. The optic, at 77mm is greedy for light, delivering speed and quality way beyond a typical Sony kit. You won't be disappointed. Another nice benefit of this lens is that 77mm ring, which accepts all of the filters, WB, etc. accessories of my larger 70-200, simplifying my kit on locations when changing for product shots to full length. (Boy, what am I going to do with all of those 55mm filters?!) If you've got a cropped sensor (A77), the lens gives the effect of a 75mm with a super fast f-stop, which no longer satisfies the need for the normal length. However, if your using one of these sensors, you probably already account for it. I haven't shot with it a lot outside yet, just studio, and am interested to see how it handles backlighting and flare. We shall see. The one big complaint I believe may come up in these reviews is the weight. This baby is heavy! For optics like this, sometimes traditional build and good old fashioned glass just can't be substituted! But, if photography is important to you and you spend all day with a camera in your hand, a little prep time in the gym is a pleasure! You're going to shell out a few more "dead presidents" on this lens than for the Sony 50mm, but you'll likely find it paying dividends in spades!

Great Lens!

Best 50mm lens for Alpha mount period. We will see what the 50mm Zeiss will be like, but it's hard to imagine it is much better considering it will be triple the cost.

Best 50mm Prime in the market!

had the DT 50 1.8 and though it was a very good lens in optic quality. i wanted something faster and solid built for my A700. I purchased this lens in mint condition used for a great price. A lot of glass with the lens and it also comes with a nice bag. Well all i can say is that i cannot part with it now. Its a super fast prime and great for indoors. Very sharp on all stops. The bokeh is the best i have ever seen. The HSM motor is silent. This lens looks very professional on a A700 body n also the Full Frame cameras.

The winner Sharp at 1.4

I have the Nikon 50mm F1.4G, first time it was difficult to decide wich is better, buy first Nikon, then Sigma, after several shoots in field, if you focus a person, two or three in a concert, wedding, portrait, just think it´s genial, forget Nikon, and need to use this master piece every day. Perhaps in F5.6 in the square Nikon is better but in the real life, you only can find every target in focus, brilliant. Only sometimes a big group, or basket match, look a little better with NIkon, but 80% of photos you will choose Sigma, it´s very sharp with d3x or d3, and of course d2h.

Worth Every Penny

Have used it for about two months both indoors and out. Performs equally well in low light and at night. Quick, silent, auto focus. Only one shot in about 75 where it failed to get good focus in low light. A little pricey for a fast "normal" lens, but worth every cent.

WOW!!!

This is an amazing lens. I know some people who think I was crazy for paying so much more for this Sigma than I would have for the Sony 50/1.4 but it was worth every extra cent. And I would buy it again in a heartbeat. It's fast, super fast. It's sharp, super sharp. It's so quiet it makes my other lenses sound like power drills. And the results, well I've never been more pleased with a lens. This should be the industry standard for a 50mm prime lens.

Worth the Price, Best fast 50mm Lens

I've tried the Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 & the Pentax 40mm f/2.8 "pancake" on my K200D and found the 50mm to soft at the faster apertures (f/2.4 and faster) and found that the 40mm wasn't fast enough for me. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 answers both of these problems! Fast & Sharp!

The one lens to rule them all.

I've got this permanently tethered to my K200D. The quality on this lens is amazing, even up to 1.4. I had my doubts and only expected to have it be reasonable at 2.0 and above, but is definitely usable at 1.4. It performs much better than I expected for landscapes, so that's a bonus. Its a great camera for those who want to keep flash use to a minimum. I did mention heavy as a con, but to be honest, I don't mind it.

This is a large aperture prime lens with a standard focal length of 50mm, ideal for all digital SLR cameras. This lens has superior peripheral brightness even at the maximum aperture and corrects a possible sagittal coma flare.

This lens is perfectly suited for a wide range of subjects enabling outstanding, sharply defined images against a nicely blurred background. The fast, F1.4 aperture makes this lens desirable for use with Digital SLR cameras.

This lens effectively becomes an 80mm medium telephoto lens on digital cameras with APS-C size image sensors. The optimum optical design and molded glass aspherical lens element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations.

The super multi-layer lens coating reduces fare and ghosting. Superior optical performance is also ensured throughout the focusing range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7") and has maximum magnification of 1:7.4.

It creates a very attractive blur, even when a small aperture is used. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF* as well as full-time manual focus override.

Please Note: * If the camera body does not support HSM, auto focus will not be available. (will work on manual)
