The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is a pro-level performer for full-frame DSLRs and is ideal for many types of videography and photography, including portraits, landscapes, studio work and still-life. It has been redesigned and re-engineered with SLD glass and has been optimized for rich peripheral brightness, with improved large aperture performance by positioning wide elements into the front groups.
Other updates to this lens include an optimized autofocus algorithm for smoother focusing and a floating focusing system to reduce lens movement while focusing. Under the Global Vision line, it features a new matte finish, an updated AF algorithm and every lens undergoes Sigma's proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) "A1" testing before being shipped. It has 13 elements in eight groups, compared to the previous eight elements in six groups, and it also has improved close focusing at 15.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6.
The 50mm F1.4 incorporates Sigma's Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) system to produce quiet, high-speed auto focus. In addition, it includes Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, and to ensure the highest-quality images.

Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

I use this lens mostly for street photography.
I have to admit, in the more than 30-years I've been a professional commercial/advertising photographer, I have, generally, always been brand loyal. In my case, that's Canon. For years, I used the Canon 50/1.4 (going through two of them) and replaced my second one with the Canon 50/1.2. I have to say, for the past three years I've owned that lens, I've been underwhelmed. I've always felt the adage was true -- almost any lens is sharpest 1-1/2 to 2 stops from maximum aperture. Sadly, this was never the case with my 50. I had to stop down to at least 5.0/5.6 to get decent sharpness across the frame, which negates the reason to own a fast, expensive. It was time for a change. I decided to rent the Sigma 50/1.4 three different times to use on three different shoots, because of the various reviews I'd read. Each time I was impressed by the sharp images the lens delivered. If there is a negative, it's slight. I discovered the the lens is perhaps about 1/3 stop (maybe 1/4 stop) darker in exposure than my other Canon lenses at any given value. (95% of the time, I shoot on manual, so you see the difference. This is not the case when used on "Av".) So, the true transmission value is less than the nominal f1.4. Not a huge deal, but worth noting. What IS worth noting is that the lens is quite sharp at 2.5 to 2.8 -- much more so than my Canon. My only other potential reservation is servicing. I know what I have with Canon (I'm a CPS member), but I hope I won't have to send the lens to Sigma. From what I've heard, though, they've much improved their repair support over the years and turnaround is relatively fast. An additional note: buy the Sigma Lens Optimizer (for focus tuning). I haven't had to use it on my bodies, but it's peace of mind to know that I can fine tune the lens if needed. Buy this lens. You won't be disappointed with the quality -- both optically and build.

I purchased the Sigma Art 50mm specifically for boudoir photography, and it did not disappoint. The lens is crisp and clean. I love how my images turn out. It's a fast lens, and is a great addition to my equipment. I was hesitant to purchase it because of the piece, but I am so sorry that I did. I highly recommend this glass.
I use this on my Canon 6d. This is by far the sharpest lens I've ever used. It doesn't focus as sharp on the outer edges. When you use your outer focus points, it struggles to keep up with Canon's L series lenses. But overall I would recommend this lens as a cheaper alternative to the Canon 50mm 1.2L.
USE: Everything and anything for low-light and dramatic day-time photography. PROS: Spectacular MTF optical clarity like the Zeiss. Beautiful bokeh. Great build and ergonomics. No plastic feel. Solid and accurate internal focus system. Great advantage over the Canon 50mm f/1.4. Wider field of view than the Canon 50mm f/1.4. CONS: Much longer and heavier than the Canon 50mm f/1.4; however, given the optical improvements, the size naturally has to increase in order to output the proper results (so not really anything to complain about).
The Bokeh is extra creamy, and this lens is the sharpest one I've ever used. Canon 6d Portraits
I recently purchased this based on discussion forums and test results. It replaces a Nikon 50 1.4G. While I only have a couple hundred snaps with it, I can safely say that the focus speed is faster than the 50 1.4G and it is sharper in every situation. Particularly sharp at 1.4 vs the Nikon. Bokeh is surprisingly good, especially with a near subject and distant background. It may not have the super soft bokeh look of the Nikon 58 1.4 but it is quite fine. From what I can tell, bokeh depends on aperture and subject distance and you may want to read objective comparisons (if you can find them) on the subject. I will say that I like the bokeh more than the 50 1.4G. Sharpness? Really can't be beat at this focal length except the manual focus Zeiss Otus. I love it for informal portraits and find myself gravitating toward it more and more. While it is big for a 50, it balances nicely with a D800. Some complain about the 77mm filter but I have many large lenses with that same size so it is a plus for me.
