Very Pleased with Macro Flash

I use the Sigma Marco Flash with a D-70 and D-50 Nikon cameras for close-up work at fire scenes and during evidence examinations. I'm very pleased with the flash, it's an excellant value for the price. My only complaint, I had to buy from Sigma a adaptor ring for my 60 mm Nikkor Marco lens.

I got it for close to 2 years (not quite 2 years yet), use it for about 2 times a week for clinical photos. Excellent Macro Ring Flash

By

This product is used on my NIKON D300 with TAMRON 90mm Macro Lens. Used for flower, insect and other types of macro photography. So far has worked very well. Easy to use. Instruction manual was easy to follow. Easy and quick to set up on lens being used.

I don't trust Adorama any more!

By

from NC  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this expensive flash hoping that it meets description on Adorama website. It was mentioned that 55 and 58 mm adapter rings are included. I trusted Adorama hoping it knows what in the package. I am interested only in 58 mm ring and believed the flash will work for me. Can you imagine my frustration when I discovered that 55 an 62 mm rings are enclosed and 58 is unavailable in Adorama even as optional! Shame on you! I always bought previously from Adorama to support it against competition but I never do it again.

Works exactly as advertised.

Exposure algorithm is generally spot of, but runs a little bright in macro shots. Easy to fine tune it. Nice halo shadow for portraits or on macro shots with close background. No shadow with distant background. Very nice that is shoots one side at a time for texture shadows in macro mode. Need to be pretty close to notice the difference, so not so useful on, say, 100mm macro. Exactly what I needed for medical/scientific. Plenty powerful.

returned next day

By

from Houston  -  Photo Enthusiast

feels and works cheap quality; works binary: the 2 tube flash units do or do not flash, no control for less or more light from each tube unlike the Nikon macro flash set; for me the left tube stopped to work after a few test flashes so I returned it to Adorama, who kindly replaced it with the Nikon R1 set, which is just a little bit more expensive, but a dream to use with sophisticated light-balance control even by the built in flash commander control in D90, so no need for the SU-800, when attached to the superior Nikon 105mm macro lens, with you can take sharp pictures at 1/200 handheld. If faster exposure is needed (I doubt) handheld then attach SB-600 flash to your camera with a diffuser and use as commander for the Nikon macro flashes with any high exposure speed you want. Do not buy this Sigma product, go for the wireless, versatile, durable Nikon macro flash set, which you can use as slave flashes for other purpose like portrait pics.

Performs as claimed

Has worked well for the month I have used it. It does give reasonable color reproduction and no shadows from 1 to several feet. The coil cord is a little stiff and may hamper some autofocus lenses. A dust cap for the lens ring would be nice

Questions about this item:

Harvey M  How to use this product out of the box. When I do the initial install, is the product already on auto? (using Nikon D90 and D7000)
Martin S  You may need to hit the Mode button a few times to switch the flash into the correct metering mode. You will usually want TTL or TTL-BL if you want the camera to control the flash power. To be honest though, M is best for macro photography, even with a real Nikon speedlight.
Harvey M  Thanks. I think you might be right
