About SLR Magic 35mm F/1.7 Mirrorless

The SLR Magic 35mm f/1.7 lens is a multi coated manual prime lens that is made to work with the Sony NEX system for camera bodies such as the NEX-3, NEX-5, and NEX-VG10. Lens is in native E lens mount and will work directly on your camera!

What is really special about this lens is that it is very light weight (~100g) and has six unique aperture blades. When wide open itproduces silky smooth bokeh. When closed down to f2.8 it forms a special shape and the bokeh of the resulting photo start to swirl with a slight Lo-fi feel. When closed down to f8 it forms a unique square shaped aperture opening. In other words it is kind of likehaving three lenses in one! It is the signature of the SLR Magic lens and it is quite interesting.

The lens is great for creative photography. We occasionally receive questions about how this lens differ from the kit lens. Field of view (FOV) becomes 52mm on the SONY NEX camera. This is the normal focal length in 35mm photography and is great for use in proper framing for a shot which may be difficult to master with the kit lens of your camera. A perfectly round aperture is achieved at f2 for the 35mm f1.7 lens so it is great to use as a portrait/normal lens as its FOV becomes 52mm on the Sony NEX camera.

The lens is a fully manual lens and it is a great lens for creative photographers who would like to take artistic photos with a shallow Depth of Field. It is easy to use

Manual focus is easily achieved by the assistance of x7-X14 zoom of MF Assistance function in Live View. Users are advised to use Aperture priority (A mode) with this lens. User would have to select shoot w/o lens mode in the camera setting. More advanced users may use Manual mode (M mode) when using this lens for creative opportunities. It is also recommended to shoot in M mode when either the internal or external flash is used as TTL metering is not enabled in Aperture priority mode.

Interestingly strange

from San Francisco, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This isn't one of SLRmagic's toy lenses per se, but it does have creatively niche attributes. It can be acceptably sharp in dead center. Everywhere else is relatively soft. This is useful for bokeh, which goes beyond the standard characteristics of throwing the background into a blur. This lens extends the softness with a blur on the edges and a different shape depending on f-stop. Thus, it's probably wise to keep the subject centered unless you're going for a totally creative atmosphere. The aperture ring is clickless. I didn't know that beforehand but that's what I wanted for cine purposes. After I ordered this 35/1.7 lens SLRmagic announced a larger 35/1.4 lens, touting it as a cine lens because of clickless apertures. Well, this one, the 35/1.7, is also clickless and should be advertised as a cine lens. This is my first cine lens and I embrace the clickless approach and am considering the 11/1.6 version for a wide angle on an m43 body. I might prioritize this 35/1.7 for video interviews, but I won't know until I shoot talking heads, or if I should stay with my old Nikon 50/1.4 for serious shooting. 35mm (70mm) is better for headshots since I don't have to move as far back vis-a-vis the 50mm (100mm) lens. This particular SLRmagic lens is tiny in diameter and gets up to 75mm long with filter and hood. The hood is threaded rear and front for a uv or nd 37mm filter. A very strange lens in appearance and function.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  is there a crop factor for this lens if I want to use it on sony A7?
Andrew R  I'm not sure I understand your question. "Crop Factor" is figured using the size of the sensor independent of the lens. For example most APS-C sensors have an approximate crop factor of 1.5x (or 1.6x). The Sony A7 has a full frame sensor , so technically no crop factor would be involved. That being said, this lens is designed for the APS-C sensors in the NEX series mirrorless compacts. The A7 does have a crop mode, which would make for a crop factor of roughly 1.6x(ish).
Shopper  so, if I use this on sony A7, would I still be able to obtain full resolution 24 M images?
CHRISTIAN L  I don't think the image circle that this lens produces would fill the A7's full-frame sensor. You would likely experience sever vignetting.
Jerry S  The description states the lens is for NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras. What about the NEX-7?
KAI L  if work for nex3, it will work with any other Nex camera.
