Marking "No, I would not recommend this to a friend" isn't completely fair. I am very glad Sony built this unit as it was a life saver...but perhaps just for someone in my situation. I have had serious issues with my Canon (XH-A1s) HD MiniDV camera. This entire line of camera now has a known defect with the firewire card. It will burn out on its own and costs $1000 for each card replacement. When the output on the camera fried (for the 3rd time), I purchased this Sony GV-HD700 to transfer tapes into my Mac for editing in FCPX. The main drawback for my use is that this Sony will only read tapes shot at 60i from my Canon (not 24 or 30). This is a limitation that I'll have to live with. I have quite a number of tapes with footage archived over the past 5 years so this purchase was necessary to retrieve material recorded in HD from my XH-A1s. If you find yourself in a similar situation, this workaround will get the job done. The Sony works for my application, but would not recommend this setup to a friend unless they were stuck like me. I feel cards are better alternatives to tape.
