I have over 100 tapes to convert to AVI files and my video camera was no longer able to get it done. I held off for a while trying other cameras but finally decided to get this since I have so many to work on. Because I have so many tapes to work on I opted for a new model rather than used/refurbished since head wear/tear is a concern. So far I've copied about 50 tapes and it's still going well. I'm not so sure that the price is justified but considering the few alternatives I went for it. This model is versatile in that it can handle both HD and SD DV tapes. I mostly have SD tapes but appreciate the option. If the price would have been considerably lower I would have given it 5 stars.

I use the GVHD700/1 primarily load clips from tape to the editing computer, and to review footage quickly in the field and at home. It helps avoid wear and tear on my camcorder. It is very portable and compact, with better video quality than expected. Very much worth the price. It works as it is supposed to. I wish I had purchased one sooner. I do wish that Sony had provided built in card-reader slots for the more popular solid-state storage cards too.

After reading all the reviews good and bad I decided to give this piece of equipment a try. Of all the equipment i have bought over the years this purchase has been the best. Every feature works perfectly. You will be skeptical to purchase this equipment due to the price and site unseen. you won't be disappointed, being able to save the wear and tear on your camera's video heads was just the first reason I bought this item. Just think without some type of playback deck every time you have to review a tape that you previously taped you have to connect your camera to your computer rewinding and fast fowarding bad for your recording heads !!!.
