Sony NEX-VG10 Features

  • The NEX-VG10 is compatible with Sony's E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses which are optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF as well as Sony/Minolta A-mount lenses (via optional LA-EA1 A-mount adapter) to open up a world of creative options
  • Enjoy incredible DSLR quality detail and clarity with 14 MP still images and even catch fast actions sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to 7 fps
  • Included free of charge via download, Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 allows you to easily add video effects, background music, titles, text, transitions and much more
  • This beautiful, 921K dots, high resolution screen features TruBlack technology which brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to the camcorders 3.0in Xtra Fine LCD display1, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions by reducing glare
  • Perfect for situations with poor lighting or when using a telephoto lens, Anti Motion Blur mode will take 6 consecutive shots in a split second, taking the best of each individual image and creating a single image with superior clarity and detail
  • With full manual control of Iris, Shutter Speed, Gain and White Balance via convenient hot keys and jog dial, you will be able to adapt to almost any lighting condition to get the best shot
  • Sony's BIONZ image processor's chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at higher ISO settings. It also enables fast processing for up to 7 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 14.2 megapixel images and 6 image layering
  • Twenty five AF points cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame
  • Control how the camera processes your images with six finishing styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and B&W. You can even fine-tune contrast, saturation and sharpness to your personal taste
  • The same sensor format that Sony builds into the standard size a DSLRs. With approx. 19.5 times the surface area of conventional camcorders8, the Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor makes getting cinematic video with a shallow depth of field a breeze
  • The Sony E-Mount 18-200mm lens provides an 11x zoom ratio and effective focal range of 27mm-300mm (35mm equivalent) for superior versatility
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode3 compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video
  • Whether you're shooting video or still images, the included 18-200mm lens will auto focus quietly and quickly, however if you want to utilize MF, this simple switch will put you in the driver's seat
  • Great for shots in the evening or times with little available light, Handheld Twilight mode will reduce the effect of camera shake when shooting a stationary subject by taking 6 consecutive shots then combining them all to create an image that you would have been almost impossible otherwise
  • Control how the camera processes your images with six finishing styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and B&W. You can even fine-tune contrast, saturation and sharpness to your personal taste
  • The dual accessory shoes open the door to many accessories for both still and video photography, including shotgun microphones and external flash lighting
  • Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV via the cameras HDMI output (HDMI cable not included)
  • Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor, especially when you're changing lenses in-between video sessions
  • High quality video requires high quality audio. The Quad Capsule Spatial Array stereo microphone contains four precision placed microphone capsules to provide exceptional front-side directivity and stereo separation
  • Using the LA-EA1 adaptor (sold separately), you can attach the full selection of a A-mount system lenses, which includes 27 current models, dozens of Minolta A-mount lenses and an installed base of millions of lenses worldwide. Operational restrictions apply
  • The NEX-VG10 can capture video in full 1920 x 1080 high definition at up to 24Mbps for amazing clarity and detail, ideal for recording on to Blu-ray Disc media since the AVCHD codec is highly compatible with the Blu-ray format
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by taking three consecutive shots very quickly with different exposure values, then combining the best highlight/shadow detail from them for one incredible shot
  • Dedicated mic and headphone inputs allow for attachment of external microphones (like shotgun microphone ECM-CG50 for pin point sound recording) and headphones to monitor sound
  • Unlike cameras that bristle with knobs, buttons and dials, the NEX-VG10 features a simple turn-and-click Control Wheel and strategically placed Hot Keys. It's elegant, uncluttered and intuitive
  • Dynamic Range Optimizer improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows while maintaining highlight detail. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
  • These help you get the shot by optimizing the camera for specific shooting situations. Select from Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Flash and Custom modes
  • For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media (Class 4 or higher recommended) (Memory card is required. All are sold separately)

Want to buy the VG10, but it lacks key features

I’m posting this here out of frustration, hoping someone will notice and forward to the head of product development for the NEX division. I currently own an HDR-CX550V, and desperately need to upgrade to better camera. The HDR-CX550V takes fairly good video, but has way too small a lens, so as a result it can’t be used for low-light applications such as time-lapse astrophotograhy. Also, the still-camera functions in the CX550V are sorely lacking, even compared to a low-end offer

The HDR-CX550V takes fairly good video, but has way too small a lens, so as a result it can’t be used for low-light applications such as time-lapse astrophotograhy. Also, the still-camera functions in the CX550V are sorely lacking, even compared to a low-end offering such as the DSC-H50, which I also own. I need ONE camera that does it all. The NEX-VG10 comes close, but I cannot buy it because it lacks key features â€" all of which are available separately on the CX550V and the DSC-H50: * GPS * Power Zoom * Manually adjustable external MIC gain * A screen the swivels 180 degrees for self-portraits and “Survivormanâ€-style documentaries * Ability to take “intervalometerâ€ style timed stills. (For example, I want to leave it all night taking one 30-sec exposure after another of the night sky) * Touch screen controls * A CMOS sensor that will never overheat * RAW mode on stills * Fast auto-focus I’ve even looked at the NEX-FS100, but despite the $6.5K price tag, it also lacks key features, such as the ability to take stills with higher resolution than 3.6 megapixles! Over the years I’ve been continuously frustrated by Sony’s apparently deliberate crippling of cameras. Sony â€" please hear us â€" WE WILL PAY MORE if you just give us what we need! I can’t buy the VG10 â€" not at $2K, or $6K, or even $300.00, because it is crippled. I would pay WAAAAY more than list if it just did what I need! It is bizarre that the VG10 does not have the basic features of the CX550V. Sony, are you listening? I’m not the only person who is frustrated!

A great step up from other camcorders

By

from Destin FL

I bought this camcorder so I could make promotional videos, training videos and still make fun family videos. So far its given me the control I want when I'm shooting. But easy enough to put into auto and let someone to just point and shoot. I've had a hard time changing settings while moving around, buttons seam to be out of place or hard to reach while holding the camcorder steady. This might just be something I need to get more comfortable with.

HAd this camera since Septmember last year. it has preformed better then expected. First video prodeced was a great success, in fact feed back on the DVD came back as thought it was better then professional hired by the city. This happened less than a week after openong the box, infact the wife filmed the event since I was in it.

Takes some getting used to- Great pictures after

By

from DFW, TX

I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 so I was sceptical about the accompany software PMB manager. I used many multimedia managers before but PMB is truly a class above the rest, it really accentuates this beautiful instrument well when porting your files to the computer (as well as organizing your existing files. As an amature astronomer, I've always challenged my cameras to star and moon shots as a test of low light capability and F/shutter options. I hope my upload works for this review, I think you may agree- this camera can. As stated in the title, unless you are using the $500.00 accessory flash (which makes taking bad flash pictures impossible), the automatic settings are not always the best, many trial photos have come out grainy even in good light, but once I get used to manual settings, same condition photos come out great now! The Sony menu items and options have not changed much from the previous Sony models I've owned (since they produced the floppy disk camera), so getting adjusted to where options are placed was a quick learn for me, there's just many more options now. I recommend you accessorize, buy the Sony xx58 model flash, the high output battery and ND/polorizers etc. for different lighting scenes. Restated: instead of 2k, spend 3k, you will be glad you did. One tick off for design just because the thing's so heavy, you need a mono/tripod for any long shoot. The solid state capture is nice and file transfer is fast as can be. If you're spending this money, you have a nice computer that can too. Vast array of Emount (and A if you go that route) lenses make this a good choice for flexible options camera.

New user of Sony NEX VG 10

By

from New Mexico  -  Semi-pro Videographer

Only been in my hands for two weeks and so far have no complaints. Can not give it 5 for that reason. Right out of the box on auto settings just great easy to use. So far playing with other settings has been fun,and a learning experience. Time will tell on how great this camcorder can be.

To clarify some questions about a great camcorder

By

from Florida

I just wanted to take a moment to write a review and clarify a few mistakes that a few of the reviews have in them. First, you should never write a review on a camera or camcorder you have not used, to write a review on sales literature is doing everyone a disservice. I have used this camera in over 100 different independent productions, so I am pretty familiar with it's features. I have also owned and used a variety of other camcorders, both consumer and pro, and can respect the differences. One review talks about the iris/ aperture not being adjustable on the lens, it is not. It is however conveniently adjustable on the control panel and can be adjusted very easily while shooting video. Not just that, it has quite a few more stops then most of the highe-end cameras to make very fine f-stop tuning right during a shoot. Once you get used to using it, it is very simple. Second is sound. The onboard mic, like almost every onboard mic, picks up a great deal of ambient sound, LIKE IT SHOULD. If you need a directional mic, you need to pick up the one offered. It is a powered condenser shotgun microphone that works excellent both on a boom and when atop the camera handle. One review said you could not adjust the volume gain, you can. It is adjustable via the menu screen, but that aside, who adjusts volume during a shoot without a break? No one shoots with earphones on with a boom mic, adjusting volume as you go. That is all for post-production editing. It is in need of a second mic input if it wants to compete with some of the big boys. Also, the controls do take a little work getting used to. If you have shot a good deal, you can pick up almost and pro camera and they are similar, this one is not. Speaking of that, it come with what I would consider a great editing software program for consumers and independent producers. This makes volume editing with different envelopes very easy. This is not a $3500 - $7000 Pro video camera, this is a $2000 prosumer camera, and a great value at it. They are spot on with the single, Exmorâ„¢ APS HD CMOS sensor. Just look at the sight for what to expect
