High Frame Rate
With CineAlta Super 35mm 4K cameras, you can record 2K 1/HD images at variable speeds, up to 120 fps with the F5 and 180 fps with the F55. With the F65, you can record 8K RAW up to 120 fps. High-frame-rate recording allows you to create super slow-motion, which can transform an ordinary moment into a dramatic revelation. With the optional AXS-R5 recorder and AXSM card, the F5 can record 2K RAW up to 120 fps, and the F55 can record 2K RAW up to 240 fps.
Wide Exposure Latitude, High Sensitivity and Low Noise
Sony's new CineAlta Super 35mm 4K image sensors and in-camera image processors capture the finest, most subtle tonal gradations across their impressive 14 stops of exposure latitude. As a result of high sensitivity coupled with very low noise, CineAlta Super 35mm 4K cameras deliver rich and fully textured images. Whether it is ambient illumination of night exteriors or glaring sunlight, your imagery will be faithfully reproduced.
More Colors than Print Film
In addition to incredible dynamic range, CineAlta Super 35mm 4K cameras capture the widest color gamut, even wider than motion picture print film. S-Log2 fully protects this expanded dynamic range and color gamut, from deep shadow to brightest highlights, handing you and your colorist unprecedented flexibility in applying looks and grading for color and contrast.
Cost-efficient High-frame-rate and 4K Production
XAVC employs the highest possible quality of scalable H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Intra-frame compression to capture HD, 2K, QFHD (Quad Full HD), and 4K resolution. Beyond delivering rich, beautiful 10-bit pictures, it establishes an affordable ecosystem for production of high-frame-rate HD and 4K up to 60p using storage-efficient file sizes never before possible. As an example, XAVC 4K at 24p is only 240Mbps. Features include the first native format for 4K video recording at 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p and 60p. Modest bit-rate recording of 100Mbps in HD mode and 300mbs in 4K mode and high frame rate up to HD 180 fps for super slow-motion. Use SXS PRO+ memory card for recording XAVC.
AXSMTM Access Memory Card means time and Cost-saving RAW Recording
Capturing all the RAW data from F5 and F55 sensors requires a new type of ultra-high-speed, high-capacity recording media. Employing unique Sony high-speed recording technology, the new AXSM Access Memory Card provides a blazing sustained transfer speed to record 2K RAW data up to 240 fps (F55) and 4K RAW data up to 60 fps*1 (F55). The cost-efficient AXSM Access Memory Card is also equally at home in both Mac OS X and Windows environments. AXSM uses the modern eXFAT file system (Extended File Allocation Table). Sony takes further advantage of universal eXFAT by introducing an economical card reader, AXS-CR1, with a USB 3.0 interface for easy, high-speed data file transfers to Macs and PCs.
Compact CineAlta Super 35mm 4K Cameras
The F55 and F5 look very similar. Both share the same compact body and accept the same accessories. But, they vary dramatically in features: the F55 by design is best suited to 4K/2K/HD production, while the F5 is tailored to HD/2K production. Both support 2K/4K RAW.

The new F55/F5 CineAlta Super 35mm 4K camera platform provides for powerful connections, including real-time 4K output to a compatible monitor via four 3G-SDI outputs. There is an HDMI output supporting 4K, USB, removable XLR audio module, time code, genlock, DC connection, and more.
Intuitive User Interface
The F55/F5 CineAlta Super 35mm 4K camera platform introduces a new intuitive user interface to operate a rich range of controls. One-touch buttons surround a colorful 3.5-inch LCD display and provide access to key parameters frame rate, shutter angle, color temperature, exposure index, and gamma which can be checked at a glance. Additional assignable buttons mean that favorite adjustments are always at your fingertips.
Sony PMW-F5 Features
- Super 35mm equivalent 4K single-chip CMOS sensor: Sony's 4K image sensor enables a single camera to provide gorgeous, super-sampled HD and 2K while preparing you for the 4K future. With 11.6 MP total and 8.9 MP effective, the Sony 4K captures a true 4K 4096 x 2160 DCI-standard cinema image.
- 16-bit RAW 2K/4K recording options with bolt-on AXS-R5 recorder: Capture RAW at your choice of resolutions: the camera's native 4K or beautiful, derived 2K. RAW recording preserves the greatest latitude for color correction and other post processes. Sony's 16-bit recording captures more tonal values than the human eye can differentiate.
- AXS-R5 records onto ASXM memory cards: The bolt-on AXS-R5 recorder records onto high-capacity AXSM memory cards, which are compatible with an affordable optional USB 3.0 reader, the AXS-CR1. Once on a PC, the RAW files can be screened using Sony's free RAW Viewer software.
- Choice of HD/2K internal recording formats: The F5 CineAlta camera allows a choice of recording formats in addition to 16-bit RAW 2K/4K output onto the AXS-R5. The camera allows a choice of: 8-bit MPEG-2 HD422, 50Mbps; 10-bit XAVC 2K/HD 100Mbps; and SR Codec 10-bit MPEG4 SStP 220, 440 and 880Mbps.
- High speed shooting up to 120 fps 2K internally and 120 fps 2K RAW with optional AXS-R5 recorder: The F5 features high-data-rate on-board XAVC HD recordings up to 60 fps with a free planned upgrade to XAVC 2K/HD recording at 120 fps. It also offers 120 fps 2K RAW with the optional AXS-R5 outboard recorder and a planned upgrade.
- Next generation high-speed SxS PRO+ memory cards: The PMW-F5 records internally onto SxS memory. High-speed shooting and the highest quality recording options require next-generation SxS recording media Sony's 64 GB SxS PRO+ memory card which can be read by the next-generation USB card reader, the SBAC-US20.
- Simultaneous RAW and onboard camera SxS recording: Sony provides coordinated simultaneous recording to internal SxS cards and the optional AXS-R5 RAW recorder. For seamless conforming in post, you get matching time code, start frame, stop frame, file names and other metadata. Supports: RAW 4K/2K + XAVC 2K/HD and RAW 4K/2K + MPEG-2 HD422.

- Choice of viewfinders: A digital interface on the PMW-F5 allows for a variety of optional viewfinders, including the DVF-EL100. This 0.7-inch viewfinder has the incredible clarity of 1280 x 720 High Definition, plus superb OLED brightness, contrast and response.
- Optional shoulder rig: The optional Sony shoulder rig provides comfortable handheld operation, hour after hour. The rig is sturdy, lightweight and features industry-standard rosettes on both sides for quick and easy attachment of third-party hand grips and other accessories.
- Small lightweight design: The small size of the PMW-F5 is particularly welcome in stereoscopic 3D shooting. The chassis is only slightly wider than a typical PL mount prime lens, perfect for both mirror rigs and side-by-side configurations.

- Sony PL-mount lenses: The PMW-F5 works with Sony's second generation, cost-effective PL mount prime lenses. Thanks to refined glass, all are certified for 4K capture, while minimizing geometric distortion, vignetting and breathing. A 9-blade iris delivers beautiful bokehs.
- Wide choice of connections: The camera offers numerous connections to suit your workflow, including four HD-SDI jacks, HDMI, USB, DC in connection, a removable XLR audio module and a removable time code/genlock module.
- Long-life Olivine battery and quick charger: The F5 takes advantage of Sony's innovative BP-FL75 battery pack, which uses Olivine Lithium Iron Phosphate instead of conventional Lithium Ion cathodes.
- Battery compatibility: The Olivine battery works with Sony's BC-L90 quick charger. The camera is also compatible with Sony's BP-GL95A, GL65A, L80S and L60S batteries, which use the BC-L70 and L160 chargers.
